Two Great Players

Yet again it looks like two great players are going the way of many others who have tried and are not going to make the grade as great managers. I am of course talking about Frank Lampard & Stevie Gerrard!!!

Which one do you think will get the Tin Tack first? As neither of them seem to have what it takes along with many others who have tried. I'm talking about the likes of Roy Keane; Tony Adams; John Barnes and even our very own Luther to name but a few.

 

Gerrard I reckon will go first. In fairness to Lampard Everton are a complete mess and he is not being backed. Gerrard seems to have a much better squad but results are just as bad if not worse

 

Just like the old days! But now it's: Lampard and Gerrard can't manage together in England.

 

Stevie to go first as he has a better squad, I think Lampard isn’t great but Everton are a mess and were a mess before he took over, I think he’s doing about par with them, whereas Stevie is definitely underperforming.

There is no real correlation between quality of player and quality of manager though, for every Zidane there is a Klopp or a Mourinho.

 

Gerrard doesn't have long to go I'd guess.
Perhaps slightly after Mr Integrity who probably has one more game, possibly v Villa?

 

My theory is that the best players have their skills and talent come to them naturally. They don't need to work hard to improve their game and hence can't pass their experience and skill on to others. Players who have to graft, work hard and hone their talent, not the most naturally gifted but get good because of their efforts to learn the game can then pass this on in coaching and management roles.

Good managers also need to be good with others. To become the best at something sometimes you need to be focused and fairly selfish, almost arrogant, taking advantage where you can. This tends to rub people the wrong way and isn't a good leadership trait.

This is why I think the best managers tend not to the top players. Of course there will always be exceptions.

 

Perhaps fair enough for Gerrard, but Lampard was never known as the most talented of his generation!

 

Plenty of people considered Lampard to be world class when he was in his prime, and not just Chelsea/England fans. Think your assessment of him might be a trifle harsh!

 

Sure, you don't score 300 goals from midfield without being world class, but to say Lampard was so naturally talented that he didn't have to graft isn't true!
