Rob Edwards - Call Out Pozzos And Resign

Another Watford manager hung out to dry by Pozzo and Duxbury.

Not given the players / squad to play to his preferred system / style.

It’s the same old story season after season.

Rob Edwards - you have the supporters onside - I implore you to call them out on their lies and threaten to resign if you don’t get what you need to deliver in your role. It would be a ballsey move but someone needs to stand up to them, else Edwards will join the long list of managerial casualties at the hands of our hapless owners.

Not going to happen unfortunately. The report in the WO clarified it won't. Name dropping Laird was interesting though.

I think it maybe a few days too early for this. We need to see where we are once the window shuts. Personally I think we'll have a few good players but with gaping holes in the squad. We wont have a functioning team. If that's the case then it's open season on the owners. If they refuse to bring in a RWB then that will be a stick to beat them with, and rightly so.

I think central midfield we also need to improve. Louza (injured) and Choudhury are really our only viable options. They are the only two players I would expect to see in a promotion winning side. Aprilla is a welcome bonus, but we shouldn't really be relying on him too much. I see Kayembe and Clevs as strong backup players, but Gosling is not even that. He's a burden of a player and needs to go. TDB is injured, but wouldn't really be much more than a squad player once fit. We need another first choice and it's vital we get it. A creative player who can link up the play, or probably even more important, a box-to-box physical guy who is better than Kayembe.

If we nail those two positions and keep at least Pedro, then I think we may be ok. But if someone like Sarr goes, we will need to bring in a central striker who is far more clinical than what we have right now. If they do all this, then I don't think anyone can complain too much. We'll have to see how it goes.

RE said in an interview with AF he isn’t and never has been tied to a particular system .

The only reason he played 352 at Forest Green was because it was the system that best suited his players at that time .

We have also made some good loan signings, and Davis and Hause will make a difference when fit. I’m reserving judgment on Bayo; we need to play to his strengths, most of his previous goals are with his head -so we need some quality in the box. If we keep Sarr and Pedro we have enough to get promoted, with the proviso that we get another RWB, and get Louza back asap.

Wing backs who can get in crossing positions would probably help. Did Gaspar get within 30 yards of the goal yesterday?

Fully agree with this, we really aren't that far from having an excellent team at this level, but I am sceptical as to whether we do get decent additions in the areas we need, especially in the midfield as we do at least have some viable options currently at the club.

To answer the thread, it would be very ballsy for Edwards to throw two fingers up at the Pozzos and resign, but he's a manager who's had 6 games above League 2 level, it would be a massive gamble for him to leave us when there are other far more experienced managers available at the moment!

IIRC he started pretty much every game with a 3-5-2 last season, but that's not to say he played the same formation all game every game. I do know they started with 4 at the back on one occasion last season, where they lost at Clarence Park to St Albans! Managers should be adaptable, but he shouldn't have to completely give up on his principles just because the board are a bunch of numpties, if a manager's style of play relies on wing-backs bombing forward, go out and get some wing-backs, I don't care if it's a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3, or whatever exotic formation he wants to use that actually fits his style of play!

Ignore the never ending cycle of lies and the same mistakes being repeated over and over and over again like a real adult and a true supporter FFS. You're just overreacting to the years of downward spiral just because we lost yesterday!

You're going to feel pretty silly when we stave off relegation and comfortably finish 14th!

    An alternative view...

We identified Laird as a decent young player for the right wingback slot. Good scouting. It wasn’t our fault he didn’t come. People will say “oh but if we hasn’t signed Gaspar” (who appears to have become the latest boo boy now Cleverley is inured). But think about it. Would we have wanted to have been held to ransom by Man U? Would we want to be told we HAVE to play him when he has a dip in form?

Don’t get me wrong. I’d have loved Laird to come. And I’m in no way praising overall our fairly average recruitment so far this summer.

    But

I’m just challenging slightly the ever growing narrative that Edwards has been totally let down. Partly let down, yes. But totally? Hmm

He looks likely to have Sarr and Pedro to work with. We’ve given him the left-footed centre half he wanted. We’ve given him the big target man he wanted. There was intent there to sign Laird. And we coveted two other centre backs too, Stephens and the Brighton guy. We’ve signed Choudhury.

Yes we’ve also given him some gash in Bayo and Minaj, so again I stress I’m not saying it’s been an overall decent window. He hasn’t got the flying right back his system wants. There are still deficiencies. He hasn’t been totally well served.

I just don’t agree that he’s been totally let down (we’ve made 7 signings) and I don’t think he should get a total free hit for our poor form.

To be quite honest, having an actual RWB with pace and energy is better than a Villarreal legend whose legs have gone, I don't care if United say he has to play, it's better to have someone who can play Edwardsball rather than someone who can't! For someone who plays with wing-backs, this is the single most important signing you could make! I'm not fully wetting my pants yet as there are still 4 days left, but even if we make a decent signing there, it begs the question why we couldn't do that before as we're 6 games into the league season already!

Not bothered that we don't have Matt Clarke as Hause should be good and I knew signing 2 LCBs wasn't realistic, I trust Edwards was right behind that signing, Bayo and Manaj...eh, we have other, much better options up front currently at the club (for now at least!), and on the RCB front, Stephens would have been good, I heard from Ed off the Sunday Service (who seems pretty ITK) that that deal is dead and that we were looking for a better alternative when it was looking like we'd have a bit of money to spend. I think a RCB probably the second most important signing we could make after RWB, but I don't know if we get one in if we don't raise money before the deadline

I’d have loved Laird too but I don’t think I’d have liked the idea of his parent club telling us how much we have to play him.

You earn your starting place through form, not because of another club’s conditions.

It wasn't reported that there was a certain quota of games United were insisting on, that's just guesswork. It was a far looser 'couldn't guarantee him regular first team football' and was reported as being tied to the arrival of Mario Gaspar.

You can see United and his stance - one week the conversation is 'we're selling our first choice right wing back, we'd really like you to come to Vicarage Road ' and the following it's 'do you still want to come? We've signed a Spanish international and club captain to play in the same position as he was offered to us for free and we can't turn a bargain down even if it's not what we need'.

If I was in their shoes, would've made exactly the same decision. He's now likely to play most games for QPR (injuries permitting) and enhance his reputation.
