If that leap against Southampton's giant CB's is anything to go by, I think this lad might become our star player this season.

Just LOL at all this hope and excitement.

    When will you people learn?

To be fair to them, the threshold for hope and excitement has dropped rapidly in recent years. It used to be early performances on pitch or maybe a jazzy highlights compilation that got people salivating. Now it's just a three second clip of a player jumping and heading about 20yds from goal in a meaningless friendly that gets them raving.

I suspect those who actually went to the friendly could see a lot of potential. I was very impressed with what I saw. He has an air of arrogance/confidence about him. He's always trying to do positive things and is sharp in his thought process. He knows the next pass before he gets the ball.....that's the impression I got from seeing him. Beforehand, I wasn't expecting too much and I thought he'd be bullied by the much bigger Southampton players, but he stood out and didn't looked phased. Early signs are good and I think we'll use him a lot more than many might think this season.

I love a whinge and my posts are mostly negative but there needs to be something to look forward to this season. If I can't get excited about an 18 year old Colombian then what's the point?

Looks like we have unearthed a bit of a diamond here, looking forward to seeing how he progresses now we seem to have a half decent coaching team.

Judging from his games in Columbia, he is even better playing in the midfield, rather than in a front 3 where he played on Saturday.

The games I watched he seemed to spend most of his time playing quite deep, turning over possession and then launching attacks by beating a man, a quick one two or a long through ball. Also around the box he likes to play through balls and one twos to break down a low block. He is not afraid to shoot from distance although they mainly sail over or pea roll. He also loves a no look pass.

He is risk taker , and because of that and his immaturity he will give away possession a fair amount so lets hope the naysayers dont get on his back too much and let him carry on taking risks.

Hopefully we ll see him play midfield more often than front 3, especially as we lack attacking thrust in there at the moment.

I like this guy. Looks pi$$ed off when he's not on the pitch and put in a good shift on it today. Can play in a few positions as well, I think he's going to be very useful.

Great little run when he first came on.

Bit unfortunate we had the red card which meant any attacking threat was lost .

He needs to work on some strength and conditioning. Looks as if a strong breeze would knock him over. He did look lively and so enthusiastic.

He looks and moves so much like Ashley Young, it's really strange. Great to see him out there and did OK considering the circumstances.

You can tell he’s got the sort of self-confidence to go out there and play without being overwhelmed.

Early doors, but it was definitely promising to see him out there competing, putting himself about and mixing it up.

I think even just getting him on the pitch (same applies for Bayo) should do him the world of good. The longer you go without making your debut, I imagine it's not a great feeling.

Looked confident but a bit scrawny. Started right-mid but was swapped with Bayo at centre-forward. I think because he wasn’t able to hold off players or win possession, so that was where he’d be less of a liability.

Maybe when we have 11 players and more than 30% possession he’ll be able to contribute more

Thought he was a bit unlucky last night really. Rob threw him on to get us up the pitch and to press high and often and yet within a couple of minutes we were down to 10 men and that plan had to be ditched. Can’t imagine he’d have come on if red card had come before his introduction but he acquitted himself quite well in an unfamiliar role and quite a feisty opposition. Thought he stood his ground well. Plus I’m pretty sure his booking was for dissent, which shows he’ll stand up for himself.

Not the same thing but after he was switched with Bayo there was a moment during open play where Asprilla was frantically waving his arms and communicating with the centre forward, telling him where he was supposed to be. He's certainly no shrinking violet.

And for those questioning his physique, he acquitted himself well against some robust play in Colombia so I wouldn't worry too much how he looks.

You can tell he's a strong player. I've seen plenty of players built like brick **** houses only to be meek as anything going into challenges.

The fact he's here this season tells me they have no worries about him adjusting to the physicality of the league

Played a first time pass towards Bayo that the keeper had to rush out and clear. Looked like it would've been quite close to perfect if Bayo wasn't on his heels and was a wonderful bit of vision.

Well that would be embarrassing! Will check back, think there's a Colombian YouTube channel that clipped all of Asprilla's contributions.

Edit: you're right. I'll need to post something on the Sema thread about how he played an overhit hopeful ball when he really should've slipped Bayo in!

Am excited by Asprilla , could the answer to our lack of creativity and is just me that underwhelmed by Pedro's contribution this far

Pedro has been our best 'midfielder' so far this season, he's really had to drop deep to get involved in games, and that's not on him

The young man is very good at football. Birmingham isn't a nice place to make your full debut but he worked hard for the team and showed courage and quality on the ball. Confident lad as well, he was giving instructions to teammates in the first half I noticed.

Very impressed with him. Looks a talent, gets stuck in, wins balls it looks like he's no chance of getting and I reckon when some around him get on his wavelength he'll start being massively influential for us at this level.

I only watched the second half (first half I barely remember hearing his name on Talksport comms) but I was really impressed with how comfortable he was receiving the ball under pressure, and either delivering a perfectly weighted lay-off, or bringing the ball under control and turning beyond the pressure.

For a young player, in a notoriously physical league, the confidence he shows to bring the ball under control when being pressured, and use it without being flustered is what really set him apart in my eyes.

Conparing how confident he is on the ball under duress with an experienced pro like Cleverley, it’s just night and day.

I hope we’re really going to focus on the South American pipeline of talent in the future, because for all the criticisms there are to make of Gino, we can’t really fault the eye for talent in that region.

Tell you what, he's gonna be a star isn't he? Touch is brilliant, vision and weight of pass excellent, and has that South American determination that he needs to succeed in England. Enjoy the 2 years we'll get to watch him.
