The real question for me is, 'what's in it for Gino?"

That was down to Dennis fighting for his inch of turf on the tiny chance that a rebound came that way. It was dumb as it dragged out the tension for the taker.

Having said that, Sarr was always taking that crap penalty. You knew it, I knew it, everyone on here knew it, the goalie knew it and yet he was allowed to take the ball.

On players who either aren't in the team now or who aren't exactly great at this level.

Sorry guess I misread this as you saying we spent it, while at this level

"we've spent somewhere in the region of 20m, which is not insignificant at this level, on players who aren't even good enough for us."

I do think it's early doors to say Okoye, Bayo and even Kalu aren't great at this level, considering they haven't played a single minute yet. Kayembe is fine at this level so far, will be interesting to see him in a 3.

Formation doesn't suit us either. I know Rob likes his formation, but we do not have the right balance to pull that off. We need to play with four at the back, Kamara on the left, Gosling in for Clevs, keep Sarr on his favoured left side with Pedro just behind Dennis. Cathcart needs dumping for Pollock - watching it back, I thought he was at fault most for the goal they scored. I would even somehow put Quina in there - we need to try a different tact especially through the middle. We are going to get trampled all season long if we persist with what we had last night.

The formation is even worse than last year. It plays to all of our weaknesses.

Three average centre backs when two will do - check.
Two wing backs who don’t cover the ground and end up exposed - check
Two midfielders, lacking in energy and touch on their own, outnumbered - check
Three increasingly disinterested forwards out of position when we finally get the ball - check.

The only comfort I take is that a coach’s system often takes a season or so to bed in, like Klopp at Liverpool. But that’s straw clutching.

Was just a baffling style of penalty for a player who has shown he’s maybe the cleanest striker of a ball the club has.

Basically gambling everything on the GK going the wrong way - which means the keeper has a 50% chance of saving it (probably more when you consider GK’s these days do their due-diligence on who takes them).

There’s no way Sarr lacks the ability to put the ball beyond the GK’s reach but it shows he’s learnt nothing from those Man Utd efforts.

I seem to recall that Chris eagles once scored from near the half way line against Brighton, but I think he was just inside the Brighton half.

Kayembe looks fine for a mid-table Championship team so far. He’s absolutely woeful out of possession though and isn’t brilliant with the ball to be honest. It’s okay when the ball is actually at his feet but he’s very limited as he’s extremely one-footed, can’t seem to play on the half-turn, which is crucial for player in his role.

Don’t particularly think it matters how many players he has alongside him when his limitations are so stark. He’s not a tenacious ball-winner, not an athletic ball-carrier, and rarely plays progressive passes (although he does try a few with success - but it’s a rarity). Just a very ‘meh’ player.

Let’s hope Edwards can coach him to be better - but on the evidence so far, I don’t think he’s good enough for a side desiring promotion.

Think it just sums him up really, a very talented player when playing on instinct but one who lacks confidence and overthinks when he's got any time.

Also why his overall level is so much lower than his skills suggest it should be and why he'll never make it at a top club.

That was ****, no idea how we got a point but truly shows how **** this league is.

I'm not really sold on this formation/philosophy, but maybe Louza and another central midfielder would make the difference.

Steve Bruce saying that was the best hes seen his WBA team play. Some sort of consolation, in that we wont be playing many teams as good as that, and unfortunate enough to play them on their performance of the season.

Key to this division is relentlessly beating the bottom 15-20 clubs.

Don't know if you're serious or joking if I'm being honest hahaha.

I always follow Serbian players and coaches, so that's why I started supporting Watford, but unlike other teams I started supporting this way, I still support Watford. For example, I couldn't care less about Reading now, but I wanted them to do well in the previous 2 season when Paunovic was their coach.

    Agree with this.

Only thing I’d say, left footed players always tend to get described as one footed. Yet very few of our right footed players are any better in their weaker foot. Don’t think Cleverly for example uses his left.

But that comment is aimed at all the times this gets said, not aimed at your description of the player.

Thought Pedro put in a decent shift last night, confused as to why a few on here think other wise?

I don't think anyone disputes the fact that Pedro put in a shift last night. The problem was that his final ball was lacking and his decision making was pretty poor in large parts of the match.

It was a stunningly well executed shot. The perfect elevation, pretty central, and to get the ball to pitch pretty much on the goal line to reduce any risk of bouncing over the bar was just perfect.

    Quina....in the holding role....??
The player who doesn't tackle and just runs with the ball until he loses it, in the holding role ?
    Was that a whoosh ?

I've watched his games for us and on loan at Barnsley. Always the same. Skillful and lightweight, runs with the ball, doesn't look up, loses the ball, occasional excellent shot. He's not the guy to protect the back 4 or 5, tackle, mark, get the ball and lay it off to a more creative player.
    What are you on ???

I'd take 7 points from those three games.

Also the only other notable difference is that Ivic always looked like he'd ******* murder you whereas Edwards looks more like he'd wine and dine you.

I’m wondering if Dennis was meant to be on penalty duty, hence going for the ball? Maybe Sarr did that thing where he thought “I’ve won it so I’ll take it” plus he probably felt full of confidence after the wonder goal.

I’d like to think RE has a designated penalty taker. If it was Sarr then that’s a strange call.

I just don’t trust Joao Pedro, Sarr or Dennis not to do something fancy and stupid from the spot.

Awful footballer aside, from those on show last night, should’ve given it to Cleverley as I at least think he’d have placed it and hit with pace.

Yeah I had very little faith in Sarr. I think Pedro would go firm to a corner, hasn’t he scored a couple for us before? Not sure what Dennis would do, but would have been good if he’d scored as that would be one each first 2 games.

Either way, hope RE makes a decent decision from here on in this area.
