Virtual Reality Headsets - Quest 2

I bought myself one of these recently (Oculus / Meta Quest 2) as a bit of a spur of the moment thing.
I’m not particularly a gamer, don’t really have the time or inclination if I’m honest, but this seemed something worth checking out and perhaps more appropriate for someone only looking for a bit of fun every now and then.

First impressions are it’s very impressive visually and as a sensory experience. But the few games I’ve tried have made me feel sick quite quickly (mainly driving games). Also find navigating menus and things a bit onerous, and get the impression some apps can be a bit buggy.

Main problem though is that I just feel like it’s not the most social way to spend my time! Tend to use it more when home alone - got covid at the moment so this has been the perfect opportunity.

Just wondered if any other forum users had experience of VR headsets and what they thought of them.

Apart from games there is also the other use for them. I am reminded of this classic Viz Top Tip.

"Weedy fellas. Develop a right forearm like Arnold Schwarzenegger by buying one of those Cindy Crawford workout videos."

Had Google cardboard and upgraded it to a cheap plastic headset from Amazon for a tenner or so. It's decent. Certainly as good as the Virtuality arcade games I used to visit the Trocadero at Picadilly circus for in my youth and the headset is somewhat lighter.

Not much of a gamer these days tho.
    I still have a PS3.

VR is generally more seen in AAA games on the modern consoles. If you look at the newer games, almost all the most recent Horror titles have "VR Support". Even on some high end PC games they offer it. Is it a fad? Maybe. But it makes money and the headsets are not cheap. If you remember "Connect" on the Xbox 360 back in 2006, that was a sort of taste of VR but in movement only (and it sucked). If you just use it now and again for a few ventures that interest you it's not a bad thing at all. Do watchout for headaches though, it puts a lot of strain on your eyes especially having to focus for so long in a single position.

Yeah, also got the Quest 2, it does feel like the technology is a bit ahead of the game releases but games like Resident Evil 4 and Super Hot are fun. Beatsaber is good fun too, especially as you can 'hack' it to add songs made by others, saves having to spend a tenner on a bunch of songs from a single band.

We often get the Quest 2 out when we have people over and link it to the TV so everyone can see what they see, always fun to stick someone in a horror situation for the first time.

Pah, PS2 still under the tv here. Got one of those HDMI convertor things. Graphics arent great obviously but it was a golden age of gaming.

I keep my VR headset on all the time, in my game most of the NPCs are ******* mental.

My PS purchases are driven by Gran Turismo or Tiger Woods Golf. When they bring out a new version of either game better than what I have then I'm interested.

Favourite game over all time? SSX Tricky

I have used the “cast” option just to make sure it was compatible with my TV as I figured that would make it more social - at least make it seem less like I was ignoring my other half!
On the game I tried it with (a roller coaster!), I think it did make things a touch slower and a bit jerky. But definitely seemed like a useful feature, and it was more fun to watch each other on Beat Saber too.

I agree with the point it’s not just for games of course (as I think someone said). I’m hoping it might be good for fitness too. With the more social/work based apps, will be interesting to see how it develops. I get the feeling Zuckerberg is keen to see this really take hold and as such will keep throwing money at it.

There are also some nice apps for viewing films in a virtual cinema environment, Moon VR being one, Skybox VR, and Devo VR are also worth checking out. I watched The Raid 2 this way. Just make sure the film is in 4K or at the very least 2K. There are some good historical walkthroughs, planetary fly-bys etc., if you fancy a break from gaming. Just remember to eat or go to bed at some point.

I have recently discovered that my old Logitech G27 wheel and pedals work on my ps2 so I have been playing GT4 and TOCA Race Driver 3, both games work great with it, PES5 is impossible though.

Does this work with Jet Set Willy?

  13. I got the quest 2 before Christmas. Played it loads at first once the wife and kid had gone to bed. Really enjoyed it. Then got COVID and had a few bad experiences of feeling ill using it so put it down for a few months. Keep meaning to go back to it so I will soon.

Some great games on there but it is a little unsociable unless you meet up with other people online and play games together.

I have a load of games downloaded. Lots of free or demo mainly. A handful I've bought.

I think a lot of people mod it to their pc games and play through that. I'd have no idea how to do that!

I haven't had much use of my Quest 2 in the last month or so for various reasons, but picked it up again the other evening. Something I found quite enjoyable was just exploring the VR animations that people have contributed.

One issue I still have with it is that battery life seems incredibly short. I imagine anything intensive would use up the whole thing in very short order. And keeping the power lead connected doesn't seem very safe if you're roaming around using it.

I hadn't realised beforehand that there is a refund policy which could come in handy, when I first got it I got over excited and bought two or three games for £10 or £15 each that I used once or twice and haven't used since, which put me off purchasing anything more as you don't know what things are like until you try them (and can you really trust the reviews?).
I now see that if I'd acted a bit quicker, I could have requested a refund, there's a policy that I can't remember the detail of but it was something like if you've used it for less than two hours in total over a certain period of time since you bought it (say two weeks) - you can request a refund. This makes me more inclined to think about spending money on it again.

  15. That's good to know thanks. I'm the same. As I said in my post, most of the things I've downloaded are free demos but I've bought a couple I've probably played for an hour so far in 6 months!

What are the VR animations or where do I find them in the store?

The VR animations are just little scenes people (artists working in VR?) have added to be viewed.
I found them just as one of the sub categories in the store, under apps I think (rather than Games). But they don’t always appear there so I guess it’s based on some algorithm about what you might like to see!
Just seems a nice way to explore the capabilities of the thing.

  17. Ah ok. I'll have a look when I next manage to get on.
