We have a habit of not integrating new players quickly and he's coming in with a few days to learn a system that has been worked on for weeks, no idea if he even speaks any English.

Maybe Edwards will be bolder than previous head coaches but given this has been a feature over many years, suggests the club prefer a slow integration of new players.

Its not such a problem this year, I think you can have 5 subs if things aren't going well you could change 3 at half time and still had two changes for the second half

you know, you sometimes have to be careful with what leventhal writes. he knows how to stir. he knows getting us going sells subscriptions.

bayat being involved is no more than his speculation & he does it by sleight of hand, by missing out a comma. look what he actually says:

Watford are facilitating his onward passage with agent Mogi Bayat, who acted for the club in brokering the original deal, likely to be involved as Samir’s six-month spell comes to an end.

which makes you think he means:

Watford are facilitating his onward passage with agent Mogi Bayat

but he doesnt cos hes missed out a comma after passage. Cos he knows that if he put a comma there, as it should be, you would realise he's guessing.
    he means this:
(ive changed commas to dashes for easier reading and emphasised likely)

Watford are facilitating his onward passage -- with agent Mogi Bayat, who acted for the club in brokering the original deal -- likely to be involved as Samir’s six-month spell comes to an end.

and then you see the whole thing is a complete guess. he knows what presses your buttons.

But sounds like he is certain of Bayat’s involvement in Samir’s arrival. Why were Mogi Bayat’s services required to transfer a player, who was not his client, from one Pozzo club to another? And how much did the club pay him to help get that tricky transfer over the line?

    very good point actually, leeds.
and all the more reason leventhal should do his job and write the story: why bayat brokered a transfer between udinese & watford. that would be the real story & much better than this current effort.
as it is it's all just innuendo, nudge nudge wink wink to drive outrage and clicks & none of us is any the wiser.
don't you think when his source told him bayat brokered the original samir deal he should have asked WHY?
    i do.
bit weird he didnt but just wrote it anyway

The agent world is a confusing and tricky one, there can often be a sort of finders fee if one agent Agent A (aka Bayat) knows of a club that wants to buy Agent Bs player. So Agent A will get approval to broker a move despite not being the players representative. Agent B will get a small cut for allowing the deal (that he had no part in, so it's easy money for doing nothing) whilst Agent A gets a majority of the agent fee.

    God I hate agents.

Yeah I totally get that and I suspect that’s been a part of the dynamic in the moves we’ve seen for Dennis and Kamara as non-Bayat clients, among others.

But don’t see how any such finder’s fee would be required here. Should be the simplest possible transfer with the one potential hitch being persuading Samir to come to us.

The only agent that would ever need to be involved in a transfer between Pozzo clubs is the players own agent. If Gino decided he wanted Samir at Watford it’s just a question of persuading the player and agreeing the terms, which is where the players agent might come in to the equation, but any fee would come out of the players wages as the agent would be representing the player with the job of getting him the best deal possible, which is what his fee would be paying for. There would simply be no need to employee an agent to deal directly with your own club to negotiate a transfer.

    mmm
I don't think it is as simple as that anymore - although it seems an anathema to professionals (accountants / lawyers) like me
It is now commonplace for a players agent to be paid by clubs (if they provide services for them) and players - in any case a standard players contract now (i understand) would often include an upfront payment (signing on fee) which is used in part to pay agents. I don't think the "conflict of interest" issue that we would see with that is regarded as too important as in reality - there isn't one - when negotiating wages the agent is clearly working for the player but when identifying a player, it is natural for an agent to recommend players they know and are working with.
This article helps https://www.inbrief.co.uk/football-law/football-agents-player-transfers/ - it is not possible to represent both under article 19 of the code but in reality ways are found around it provided the agent is fully licensed (in theory regulated)

I did think someone would raise this, I appreciate as part of the negotiations the agent cost might be covered up front or agreed separately through the negotiations taking place between the club and the players agent, ultimately however, in a deal between two clubs owned by the same person, the only person who needs an agent is the player.

Surely there are cleaner and cheaper ways to do that? I’m not familiar with the exact financial structure of the club but the club could issue dividends on its shares. Or overremunerate him for his employment. Why would he need Bayat for that too?

From what I can recall about our finances they do that anyway and are v highly paid compared to their counterparts at other clubs. This could just an extra revenue stream away from limelight. Although this is all conjecture anyway with no proof!

New French just dropped. Some interesting tidbits:

    Leventhal thrown under the bus...

Looks like the Samir replacement is a free transfer/loan:

In brighter news, looks like we can expect a spending spree of between £30m and £50m over the next month, exciting times!

Loving this Observer vs Athletic battle that's been raging this summer. That the observer are winning by a landslide. Wonder what AL said to piss off the club as they've obviously decided to pick a side..

You're correct, he did say that:

The question was clearly in the context of the playing squad though so I think his attempt to dodge it somewhat will backfire and, rightly or wrongly, these quotes will be thrown back at him all season long

Shhhh don't spoil the fun. Much better to pretend that Duxbury said it would all be invested in new players so posters get upset when that doesn't happen :).
I expect it will be "invested" in paying down the loan.
The key point he was making was that it wasn't going to be sucked out of the club.

Basically they are potentially being complacent and think we are good enough without needing too many more players no matter how much money we have .

Let’s hope but but might be in for a nasty shock.

Shh. Don't spoil the fun. Smart arses are lining up to bend reality to try and defend a CEO who's been hoist on his own petard more than a dozen times, but still they look to him for reason and stability. They even defend 12m a season being funneled to a seriously dubious agent for bringing us crap players when we have no money. Shhh.

The weirdo RS2 claims he's avoiding my comments, but I'm really not convinced Greaves for £5mil-7mil would be good business - from the albeit fairly limited amount I've seen of him he seems a bit of a donkey and too passive for a CB. Sure he has time on his side but there'll be better deals out there for sure.

You seemed to have informed yet utterly incorrect opinions on almost every player. Greaves is excellent and will play in the PL one day (and as a homegrown left-footed CB would be likely to play in the PL even if he wasn’t excellent). Not yet the finished article but there’s a reason he played every single minute of Hull’s season last year and he’s just 21.

Regardless of whether we can afford that sort of fee, given the paucity of left footed homegrown CBs with Championship experience, I’m surprised if he wasn’t on at least the long list. I actually would think some very informal conversations took place that did not rise to an inquiry and Duxbury has taken his opportunity to undermine Leventhal further and dismissed the story.

I know everyone is focussed on Clarke and Hause but I wonder if any of the following could also be of interest:
Levi Colwill (unlikely but if Chelsea do convince to go on a dry loan we’d probably be the best available option)
Luke Mbete - young CB at Man City. Still 17 I think but got a bit of a look in during preseason and is highly regarded. Maybe a bit raw but Colwill was up to the task at the same age last year.

And if not from the PL (though I suspect it is some sort of PL loan based on various comments by Duxbury etc).
Alfie Mawson (free agent) - previously of interest to the club in the past.
Jake Cooper/Murray Wallace. The latter is old but pretty well suited to the role. Cooper not particularly good in possession but that may be a function of Millwall’s style. He’s incredible in the air too.
Rob Atkinson at Bristol City - a good stylistic fit but not the best defender. No idea on price.
Liam Kitching at Barnsley - not sure if he’s good enough but formerly of FGR (before RE was there but I’m sure he’ll be familiar nonetheless). Pretty young and played ok last season in an awful Barnsley side.
Eiran Cashin - young Derby defender just breaking through. Did fairly well in his debut season last year.
Heard that might be because his family are from Southampton or something like that.
