That's why I made my arguments and gave evidence to the contrary and left. Just not worth the time and effort.

In other news Kim Min-jae joins Napoli for 20m. The one that got away

The "ones" always get away from us because we go for "threes", "fours" and "fives" - and many a "zero".

Sure, and make it a crap one to clearly signal that he's only our third-choice right back who'll spend more time in the reserves than for the first team.

That is a completely valid question.

At least we’re not on as big a wind up as Walsall. Poundland is their sponsor and they have just sign Timmy Abraham.

Jacob Rasmussen is a left footed centre back at Fiorentina being offered out to Championship clubs atm, I know RE wants the player to be HG but wouldn't surprise me if we bite regardless.

  13. Burnsy

We really really cannot be adding anymore non-HG without 2, 3, maybe even 4 heading out first.

  14. YellowKicks

We shouldn't be signing a single non HG player from this point onwards, but I don't trust the club to be that sensible.

I mean, I’d still sign ones we can afford who are better than what we have - eg. If Nandez suddenly was attainable, I wouldn’t hesitate and just accept he’s going to take Kayembe’s place.

In all honesty, where we needed to be looking is at 3 HG CB’s, maybe even a HG LWB and a HG CM. Get rid of WTE, Kabasele, Sema and Samir.

I don’t think the number of non-HG’s is such an issue - it’s the fact that a number of them are dross CB’s.

Never gonna do all that in 1 window / but we don’t even seem to be making much of a start.

Can’t see us binning off WTE. He is a good age and HG (due to his time at Spurs). Otherwise do agree that Sema and Kabasele should follow Samir out the door.
Looks pretty decent to be fair (though obviously unless we have a number of additional non-HG departures) there’s no room for him.

It might be feasible if we were intending to play Gaspar at RCB and sold Kabasele, while also signing another HG RWB.

From the clips I've soon though I'm not convinved by the idea of Gaspar at RCB.

this is an excellent point, burns. i think that in terms of evolution of the culture & squad though, some time for rob's ideas to fully bed in & for him to fully assess what we have, there's nothing wrong in expecting this to take the next couple of transfer windows actually

From French’s article this morning. Nice and clear communication from Duxbury for one, but the proof in the pudding is in the eating.

“There is no reluctance or refusal from Watford to sign players for a fee, particularly when it comes to recruiting defenders.

I put that inference to chairman Scott Duxbury this week after many supporters had their heckles raised by a story that suggested the Hornets had withdrawn interest in Hull City’s Jacob Greaves when they were told the asking price would be between £5m and £7m.

“That is simply made up,” said Duxbury. “I find it really annoying having to explain a situation about a player that we’ve never even enquired about.

“That player wasn’t even on our radar. Rob chose the player he wanted to sign, we went and started work on that. It’s Rob choice, and I’m certainly not going to suggest he should sign someone else just because it means we have to pay a big fee for a player to show we’re willing to spend. That would be madness.

“Rob narrowed his search down to two players, both homegrown, left-sided defenders. He then selected the one he wanted, and we are working on that deal. The player you mentioned didn’t come into our considerations. I wouldn’t know what fee is being asked for him because I never made any enquiries about him.”

Duxbury said that while the club will happily pay fees in order to sign the players Edwards wants to bring in, they are also not averse to spotting a bargain.

“If we can get the player the head coach wants and we can get him for zero, why wouldn’t we want to do that?” he said.

“And it’s not a case of us saying to Rob he can only spend a certain amount or he has to only consider players that we might get for free either. He tells us the players he wants, and then we work to make it happen.

“Being clever in the transfer market isn’t a crime. Forest got promoted last season largely on the back of three loan players. There are many other teams who have spent fortunes in transfer fees. Is a club like Derby a model that we want to follow?”

Duxbury remains adamant that the squad the Hornets have is strong enough to achieve promotion back to the Premier League, especially under Edwards and with a totally different atmosphere in the dressing room.

“Dan Gosling was very right in what he said in his Watford Observer interview: the squad has been improved just by moving out one or two individuals,” he said.

“It’s also been improved hugely by the arrival of Rob Edwards. We have very good players like Joao Pedro and Louza who haven’t suddenly become bad players because we’ve been relegated.

“You’ve got players like Dele-Bashiru who had a very successful loan and is back here now. We’re starting to see the best of Kayembe because of the way we’re playing and the coach actually picking him. We invested heavily in Asprilla who we all feel is going to be a huge talent.”

There has been a summer of anticipation that some players would leave, particularly attacking players, and that the club would use those fees to strengthen the squad.

“As things stand, our attacking options are Pedro, Sarr, Dennis, Manaj and Bayo. I think that is a very strong set of options,” said Duxbury.

“That’s currently. We suspect at least one might leave, and so we’ve been working on options – that Rob has told us he wants – that would be ideal replacements to fit in with the style of football we intend to play. We’re prepared and ready to move when and if we have to.

“Money isn’t taken out of the club, and what we bring in we reinvest, whether that’s the playing squad or the infrastructure that supports it.

“If a player leaves, of course any fee we receive will be reinvested. If key players leave, of course they will be replaced. As it currently stands, we have a squad of a lot of very good players competing for 11 places.””

    To summarise:
LCB target picked by RE. Narrowed down to two then one and who is currently being worked on. Left footed and homegrown.
Edwards very involved in incoming transfers, supposedly
Not going to pay a fee just for the sake of it but open to paying fees
Club preparing attacking options should one of Sarr or Dennis leave. If they go they will be replaced.
Club will reinvest transfer proceeds (with the caveat that reinvestment does not necessarily mean in incoming transfer fees).

    Decent article that.

Sounds like the mystery LCB could be closer if narrowed down to one - generally you do that once confident. Also get impression at least one of Sarr/Dennis still certain to go - hope it's Sarr if so for both parties.

If we're trying to loan Bielik from Derby seems odd to criticise their model to the press unprompted!

But the new keeper we have brought in isn’t deemed good enough to start ahead of a guy who basically played second fiddle to a bloke the club clearly didn’t like last season ..

LOL at Duxbury saying Forest got promoted to the PL off the back of 3 loans players. One of which we have just sold for peanuts.

I welcome his new attitude to speaking and (trying) to be honest. Next step is to actually consider what comes out of his mouth.

But there can be no question - the club hierarchy have sidelined Leventhal and are being open at their displeasure with him/The Athletic. As a few have said this summer, this is as a long time coming.

Not to say he doesn’t break news these days - he was the first to mention Gaspar. I think he just gets stuff from agents and other journos affiliated with The Athletic and not from anyone at the club. Whereas Andrew French will be transparent but only tell us things with a fair degree of certainty.

I think he was referring to their other 3 loanees that had more central roles: Garner, Davis and Spence.

But totally agreed. Pretty clear now the club won’t work with Leventhal. Good to have both in the club reporting ecosystem though as they get their stories from different sources and report differently. For a long time it was essentially just Leventhal.
