Agreed I don't think we will spend that much either but the fact we're mentioned for player like this for me bodes well

Sadly, agents and journalists plant stories and clubs can do little about it. We could have zero interest and at the quoted price, I’d say that’s likely.

By all means take it positively, but I wouldn’t read too much into it.

  3. Knight GT

    Knight GT Predictor extraordinaire 2013/14

I’m aware that journalists and agents often create interest even if there isn’t any but the Swansea player we genuinely interested and have made a bid of £8m more than I thought we would spend all summer

  4. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

Obviously I am cynical, but to me that is an offer Swansea would never accept and we know that. It's just for show. On the 1 in 100 chance they accepted then we'd just make it happen because it's an absolute bargain, even if it was outside the budget.

It's not like a football club will come in with a low offer and see if it unsettles a player, standard practice.

That’s cynical even by your standards to say we’re making a bid just to appease everybody

I think it is called negotiating. You wouldnt go to a car dealer and offer what they wanted would you?

  9. Jumbolina

Which is fine if you follow through with a more realistic bid but we never do.

  10. Jumbolina

We do it every summer. Sling unrealistic offers around that have minimal chance of success and then scuttle off. It’s not negotiating. It’s wasting everyone’s time.

All that needs to happen to make me look an idiot is for us to sign Piroe/Potter for £10m right?

It’s not about making you like an idiot, I think you’ve achieved that already!! It’s your opinion and it’s one I hope you’re wrong about. It doesn’t make you any more of an idiot than anybody else

But to what end? I've asked this before but an accusation that's been leveled at the ownership has been that they don't give a **** about the fans. If that's the case why go to the trouble of drafting up bids, approaching clubs etc, just to make the 10% of Watford fans who follow every rumour, happy for a week?

No idea. About 50% of the things they do are illogical.

Why trade exclusively with Bayat when the results seems to harm us. Why waste other team’s time with daft bids. Why be constantly involved in petty administrative disputes with other clubs over payments.

I don’t know why they do the bizarre things they do. I just know that they do it.

  16. WatfordTalk

    WatfordTalk First Team

But with the Bayat stuff, we know they do it. Some will argue they do it because we potentially make a profit compared to deals with other agents, some will say the dross outweighs the good players. But either way, we know it happens. There's at least a solid reasoning behind it, even if everyone doesn't agree with it.

But making actual bids, for actual players, writing out the email, making the phonecalls, drafting up potential contracts etc etc, with the only purpose being to slightly appease a few dozen people on wfcforums/Twitter? Really? Even with Gino, it's a massive stretch.

I mean, the second most successful era we've had in our entire history has gained a little bit of credit in my book.

But that debate has been done to death.

Maybe that’s not the motive and it’s just childish petulance. You’d need to ask him. But again we know we do constantly lowball people and then not follow up afterwards. We waste people’s time . Unless all these bids over the years are all just gossip of course. As I said I have no inside information on why we are such a weird unlikeable organisation. Anything from me is speculation,

Similar debt to most clubs after a successful spell in the PL and relegation, every club wastes money, no evidence of wrong doing or crimes committed, top half Championship squad after we sell 2 players worth roughly £50m.

Happy to, my statement will still be true.

I think we low ball in the hope we pick up a bargain, like Dennis. I'm not a fan of it, and we've missed out on several players (defenders especially) that could have helped us massively, due to ****ing around with disrespectful bids.

I'm just saying I find it unlikely they're doing it to appease any Watford fans on the internet.

But just making "lowball" £8mil offers for players which we suspect will get rejected and leaked would also be a very odd tactic, as all it really ends up doing is signals to other clubs whose players we might be interested in that we have at least £8mil to spend.

Do we even know that we've made an £8m offer ? Or are we relying on the net/social media/athletic ?

I've posted about this before, but agent relationships are incredibly complicated and pretty much no one outside of football knows anything about it. West Ham for instance pretty much only sign players from Will Salthouse. So much so that they only signed Dawson from us because Salthouse said he'd guarantee them Benramha if they took his other client who didn't have any PL suiters, Dawson. A lot of agents work in much the same way and will only work with clubs that they have good relationships with... I'm not justifying our relationship with Bayat, but it's not as black and white as most on here make out.

Depends if you isolate on pitch success with all other considerations which would be idiotic. Pompey had some good times 15-20 years back,

Those considerations being? We're in nowhere near as perilous a situation as Pompey were.

Do you think Portsmouth would trade their FA Cup and wins in Europe against Milan for a few years of mid table Championship finishes?
