I’m surrounded by Queen on all sides - first, my 15 yr old playing clips of “Killer Queen” as it’s one of the set pieces for her music GCSE tomorrow; and now this. Would rather be surrounded by pressure washers right now tbh.

There are some areas where it's maintained the population indices and a few where it has actually increased but in general the densities and calling males have declined in number. A lot of species are suffering especially passerines.

Thank you most kindly for the photographs TUT. Real beauties those birds of Fennoscandinavia like the bluetail although if you venture north in this island you will encounter most of those other species. I'll have to get the Sigma telephoto out and actually use the D850 I bought a couple of years ago if I can get the time. Once again keep posting these TUT if you can. They are wonderful to see. :)

Yes I've seen 7 of those latter 11 in the UK but most aren't easy or guaranteed anywhere and getting decent views/photos can be tricky., easier in Finland, esp with a guide !

You're absolutely correct. Several of these are predominantly only winter migrants here. I wonder how the migration patterns will be changed in the coming years. It's a rather concerning worry.

Advice please : At this current time I have a Mexican standoff with the slugs . I won't kill them if they eat my runner beans but if I catch them then they will end up in the compost bin from whence no slug returns .
So, how do I stop slugs eating eating my beans ?

Yep the Don't like crawling over. It's like surrounding the beer fridge with lego bricks and banning footwear in the house.

Tried it once. Slugs completely ignored it and I’d eaten so many eggs I didn’t have a **** for a fortnight.

I've never found a satisfactory solution and don't want to use poison given the impact on other wildlife. Copper rings round pots seem to work but not a solution for runner beans. Beer traps seem to have some impact but if sunny you need to keep topping up as it evaporates, heavy rain and they get overfull/too diluted. Plus you are wasting beer !!!!! There are some chalk-like "wildlife friendly" powders you can sprinke in a circle around what you want to protect, but you need to redo it after every significant rain. I'd love to hear of a solution but haven't found one so far.

I sat down with the slugs and snails Jeremy Corbyn style and we talked through our differences, coming to, what I believed on the basis of a series of wiggles, was a binding agreement on areas of the garden where they could eat. Then the little ******** proceeded to eat all my lettuces.

Lettuce isn't food, it's what food eats. Ergo, cook the slugs.*

*Do not do this there are serious and potentially life threatening consequeces for eating slugs.

That must have taken hours :). (or were you the one wiggling?)
Sorry to hear they romaine a problem.
Perhaps they misunderstood and thought "....he said he'd lettuce carry on eating all his plants" ?

Big Oil vs the World tells the 40 year story of how the oil industry delayed action on climate change - Media Centre (bbc.com)

No surprises here then. Exxon have repeatedly tried to undermine climate change with fake news, pseudoscience and lobbying senators. What is worse is their chief scientist promoted these views. Following his greed rather than objectivity. For what is science but the pursuit of the truth ? Shameful. And Koch Industries pressuring Republican senators with lobbying, funding anti climate change candidates to unseat those who did not agree and the rise of the loons of the Tea Party and it's chief idiot Donald Trump. According to him and these other dimwits climate change is a hoax.

Which is why now in America there is an impasse on action on climate change despite all the evidence.

They want to return large swathes of the Highlands back to the climax vegetation and the native species that are symbolic of it along with in time perhaps the reintroduction of wolves. New Zealand are doing a similar thing and Wales. The denuded mountains of what is now high pasture now infested with gorse in both islands down there are being rewilded with native tree species. And for instance allowing the natural cycles of flood and channel change to start again.

This has been highlighted again recently. All our wonderful local MPs voted against any amendments to the sewage treatment bill because it might cost the water companies money. Meanwhile billions disappear into the pockets of investment capitalists and shareholders annually. These discharges continue unabated killing wildlife and in areas which are designated as marine conservation areas which highlights the government's two faced attitude towards the environment.
