If we want him, we’ll get him. Simple as that.

I'm sure the name-dropper extraordinaire Tommy Mooney will soon be regaling us with how many of Rob Edwards' kids he has coached, watched in his own kids' teams etc., along with how many FGR players he has scouted and recommended over the years during the next season.

If the ownership can keep their grubby mitts off ANY manager for any reasonable amount of time, this team will do well. May as we’ll be Robbo

Is this chap better or worse than the MK Dons manager? It's for some gloating at a QPR fan I plan to do (or not).

I suspect time/next season will tell. Both of a similar coaching pedigree and at a similar stage in their career. Manning has obviously managed at a higher level but Edwards got his side over the line. Both favour heavy possession styles but Edwards is big on pressing aggressively out of possession and also appears to use the ball a little faster than Manning.

Meh. Gone by Christmas at the very best.

Good luck working with whatever tat Mogi sends/has already sent our way, while being constantly undermined by Gino refusing to cut losses on the disgusting turds that got us into this mess.

Unless he’s given free reign to cut out whichever elements of the squad he deems toxic, and is properly backed in the transfer market with characters he wants, we’re looking at more of the same incoherence that got us here.

Probably mid-July before he’s making the same stink face we saw from Marco Silva when Gino promised to back him, and then came through with Zeegelar.

Based on Louorns tweet, using our current crop of players (we know certain players are off so don’t include them) what’s your “best” starting 11 to fill these positions?

    Mine would be;

    1. Okoye
    4. Kaba
    5. Sierralta or Pollock
    6. Samir
    8. Kucka (Etebo if we sign him)
    10. Louza
    2. Kiko
    11. PZ7 or Asprilla (Asprilla won’t be with us)
    3. Kamara (doubt he stays)
    7. Fletcher (not a target man but he’s all we’ve got)
    9. Pedro or Cucho

Bottom line is, we don’t really have many of the type of player Edwards uses. So it means either, a big overhaul and we bring in players to fit his system, or Edwards has to make do with what he gets and make it work.

Why would Edwards tell FGR he's talking to Watford?

He obv has option of release, FGR have not tied him up contractually so I can't see we are particularly underhand.

We've not come in during their season, we've not disrupted their flow, aside from needing to find a new manager. In fact it's the best possible time for them.

With Silva he was tied in a contract, we said no. Everton persisted which was against the rules, Silva was a **** about it - and it was in the middle of a season.

They didn't want him to go, but that's about all they can justify being upset about.

There's lots to complain about WFC, but this is a bit far fetched to add to the list IMO.

They can appoint a caretaker and have him back in October when we dump him anyhow.

No, it will clearly be down to the manager if we aren’t top by the end of Oct and canter to the title. Irrespective of the players made available.

I wonder what will be the expectation early on?

If it really is to win the league (not just get promoted) then either we need to back Edwards in the summer or it will just be the same old story.

West Brom and Sheffield United sacked their manager this season after slow starts so wouldn't be out of the ordinary but with our record and the way this has been done we'd be a butt of all jokes again.

  18. The undeniable truth

The expectation will be auto promotion irrespective of the squad he’s given and if we have a slow start, he will be sacked. I think we all know this :).

I’m trying to work out his successor by pinpointing the most diametrically opposed club to FGR, but I keep coming up with us each time. Surest sign yet our next manager in October when this guy gets sacked, will in fact be a management dream team of Gino & Dux.

Random question, but as FGR play in a village, where do the fans generally come from? Is it mainly Stroud?

This is a very good read. Arteta has been given time. Remember their game against Brentford on opening day? He's had to build a new culture at Arsenal but the owners have stuck with him and it's starting to show results. Can our owners be as patient?

Rob will be fine, all he needs is get Fletcher and King to score 20+ goals each. I’m sure if he tells them they are brilliant, coupled with an arm around the shoulder - they will be ripping up the champ up in no time

RP's question got me interested so I had a quick look at Forests Green attendance and ticket prices and I was surprised to see that an adult season ticket is almost £400. Seems extortionate at their level.

Blimey, for a club that's all about self sufficiency and sustainability, I can't see how that's going to work in the long run. Also just about one of the worst grounds in the country to get to by public transport from the looks of it.

The only time I've heard of Dale Vince was overhearing two Americans in a cafe on Redondo beach earlier this year discussing that he was likely to sell the club and move in to politics. For all our sakes I really hope that isn't true, I think I've heard enough from him for a while.

    Morning folks,

Been a bit of a whirlwind 24 hours. My overriding thoughts are that it's a shame for Watford, Rob & FGR that it went through this way. We would never have held Rob back from this sort of opportunity, a completely avoidable situation.

A lot has already been mentioned on here with regards to Rob's reign at FGR. The only correction I'd make is that Kane Wilson (L2s player of the season) was not brought in by Rob. He was already there (signed 2020). The two signings Rob requested (Opi Edwards & Sadou Diallo - have not worked out & both are no longer with the club)

Theres no doubt Rob benefitted from a incredibly well settled & talented L2 squad. In the summer, he even commented on how there was minimal work required to take the squad forward - the expectation at a minimum was to get promoted.

We started like a house on fire & by February, had a 16 point lead over Exeter. We then really struggled for form, losing 4-0 to Barrow, conceding 5 at relegated Oldham & recently, losing our final home game 3-1 to Harrogate. We won the league on goal difference.

Rob is a excellent commentator, arguably the best I've seen in proffessional football. Very similar to Gareth Southgate, progressive & will never single out a individual. His time at England would have no doubt influenced this.

Regardless of the intensity of a situation, he is very calm and measured. A very data driven manager, believes in his methods & will not change system, regardless of performance.

In fact, we only changed shape (3-4-1-2 to 4-4-2) ONCE in a entire year. This was in the FA cup, where we lost to St Alban's.

His in game management is the only thing area that would concern me. Teams constantly doubled up on our fullbacks - who were involved in 34 of our 74 goals. This stiffled us in the last few months of the season & was imo, the reason we limped across the line.

Overall, a exciting appointment for Watford, he's a excellent L2 manager, but still had bits to learn. The support he'll have at Watford in terms of staff/players will be of a significantly higher level, so I hope this allows him to grow further as a head coach.

Welcome to the forum our two friends from FGR. Thank you for your insightful posts.

It’s nice that we can discuss Edwards with you. Any disagreements between our club and yours are between our owners and yours. As fans we will probably never know the whole truth of what’s gone on. It’s not a nice feeling knowing our club might have acted badly, but as supporters sadly we cannot control that. We can only voice our regret and displeasure, and I’d be sad if we were in the wrong.

I’m pleased with the appointment, although like everything else with Watford it does come with caveats. Like others, I’m slightly sceptical that our owners will change their spots, but see no use wasting energy just yet worrying about that until it actually happens. I also remind myself that other coaches have managed to make our model work successfully, despite its obvious limitations. So it’s not right to assume that Edwards is doomed to fail even if he isn’t given much say in transfers etc. But yes of course it would be much better if he is. I want to see him fully backed and supported. Give him some, but not total, say in the makeup of the squad. Let him get on with coaching it. And stop annoying the players with petty decisions. Only time will tell if our owners are capable of this. But it promises to be a fun time finding out.

Best case scenario is we have a season to look forward to with a better brand of football. More winnable fixtures. Better communication from the coaching staff. Less risk of players getting isolated and sulking. Let’s hope we can start next season with a squad who actually want to be here, who have something to prove, who don’t feel they’re doing us a favour, an environment where younger players can flourish if they’re proven to be good enough, and that in the event of a poor run that us fans show exactly the same patience that we are encouraging our hapless owners to show too.

I don’t feel Edwards being appointed will be enough to convince everybody that this really is the start of a new and different chapter, and that’s fair enough. I believe it’s a start but there’s a big but of course. All any of us can do now is watch and see.
