What jolly japes de Pfeffel and his zany gang have planned for the Queen's speech: ttps://twitter.com/francska1/status/1518916591299309569 The thing is, I find this totally credible and absolutely incredible at the same time:
Some good analysis here as to the motivation; https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/apr/26/boris-johnson-northern-ireland-brexit-protocol The key question is are the public, who were bored of Brexit and just wanted it done, going to look favourably on a Brexit row in the way they once did? There is no doubt the "get Brexit done" was a key slogan of the 2019 election for the Tories. Is the fact that they clearly haven't finished arguing over it going to play well with their voters? The Tories have already lost some of the Brexit loonies such as June Mummery and Ben Habib, can they afford to gamble on losing the more moderate Tory and red wall leave voters? And, even if it does play well domestically, how will it be viewed internationally, especially by the Biden administration in the US? It smacks of a very desperate gamble as part of "operation save big dog" to me.
I'm really uncomfortable as the NIP was a (the?) key part of their lies manifesto that got them elected. I can really see a "Battle with Brussels Eurocrats*" being red-meat for the (shrinking?) Tory base in England but the blow-back from the US is going to be unimaginable if (when?) the civil war restarts. Also I *think* we will see the EU doing the same to protect its citizens... *Even though we've regained our Sovereignty so they should have zero effect/influence on how our now free nation operates.
I think that a "battle with Brussels" go to option for UK government worked a treat when domestic politics were failing, and they needed a scapegoat, when we were still in the EU. But now we are out are people still going to fall for it? And yes, NI still is subject to some EU rules and regulations but, when it comes to it, the majority of British people have never been that interested in NI. They will be even less so if they end up paying for EU and US sanctions because the government has pandered to the DUP minority. I think this is all bluff and bluster and will, like the threat to trigger article 16, not lead anywhere.
