From what I saw of him yesterday, I wouldn't have him as our first choice. He didn't do anything wrong, but his movement and command of the penalty area was weak. He's very much like Bachmann when crosses come in. You could just see the indecision.

However, it was a very quiet game for him. He only had one save to make. He spread himself well at the feet of Salah and managed to get a leg to his shot to deflect wide.

Physically he's very impressive. Tall and athletic. Can kick a ball a long way, but I didn't get the impression he was anything special with the ball at his feet. I need to see a few more games where he's under a bit more pressure, but the first impression was I really think he's raw and needs a lot of coaching before he can become our number one.

No point in having a GK who is good with his feet unless we have CB's willing to take it off him and build from there. Presently we only have defenders who are interested in whacking it up the pitch or into touch so may as well cut out the middle-man and have a GK that does it.

There is a touch of David James about him when you see him on the pitch. But with James, he was extremely assertive when the ball was crossed. I remember almost feeling sorry for the opposition when a ball was crossed as he claimed everything.

Even though I have my doubts as to him being our number one right now, I feel he just needs coaching and developing. He's only 22, which is young for a keeper. He probably has a lot of potential and has time on his side to develop.

Anyone got access to % of crosses stopped by keepers in the Eredivise this season?

Bachmann has stopped 3% of crosses (3/100) and Foster 5.5% (4/73) this season.

For reference Robert Sanchez (Brighton) stops 13.4% of crosses.

Time? Sounds like Bachmann is off, Foster is retiring and Dahlberg doesn't seem to be a no. 1 (yet). So do we buy another keeper, or put up with Bachmann mk 2?

I hope he doesn't want to play in the Premier league that much and is happy to step down and start life in the Championship!?

This reports backs up my view of Okoye. He's nowhere near ready to be our first choice keeper. Loads of potential sure, but can't be our keeper next season in the Prem or Championship, IMHO of course.

    Okoye needs to toughen up

This reporter was surprised goalkeeper Maduka Okoye retained his first choice status at AFCON and is still skeptical. Although he saved well from Mohamed Salah against Egypt, he was at six and sevens against Sudan. The Sparta Rotterdam goalie dropped a cross, let a cutback slip from his grip and generally lost the command of his defenders.

This 22-year-old Germany-born 'oyinbo' needs to be put on an 'akpu' and 'eba' diet in the coming days to get him in the never-say-die 'Naija spirit' required to deal with menacing, bone cracking African players. They will come at him on crosses and corner kicks, and hopefully he'd be ready.

What are Gabriel Eromonsele‘s qualifications, is he a goalkeeping expert? I’m sure a few people on here would know better than this guy. Does he even have a twitter account?

Possibly not ready yet, although I remember De Gea had the same issues when he started in English football, he was bullied at set pieces and look at him now.

Sounds like a worse version of Bachmann. Great business from the club spunking €6m up the wall on a downgrade.

I like how we've gone from writing players off after 10 games to writing them off after an interview.

I'm going to lambast the next signing because of his star sign.

I thought David James was the best youngster (in his position) we have ever had, yes better than John Barnes, James got in and right from the start looked an absolute natural!

Not sure I can see him being bullied as he is a very big guy, therefore I think he'll soon start dishing out far more stick than he gets, then settle in pretty quickly like De Gea did.

This report reads like it was motivated by racism, I.e. that Okoye isn’t a true Nigerian (he’s from Germany and ‘Oboye’) and therefore isn’t worth giving too much weight too. Watching Okoye you can see he doesn’t command his box as well as we’d like but he is young and mouldable and surely worth a try if we go down. I am not sure he looks so outstanding that it was worth spending €6m (one of our biggest transfer fees in two years) to get him in 6 months though.

He’s not, he’s absolutely horrendous at coming for set pieces, the worst in the league for it in fact. He’s not very good anymore, he was a much better shot stopper back then as well

I watched him a lot since last season at Sparta, they were a relegation candidate which means they needed a good defence or at least a very good keeper to survive. There defence was **** and still remain ****, but Okoye kept them up. Some of the saves he made last season was unreal and reminded me of De gea a few seasons ago when he was at his best. He is still very young but I will take him over Bachmann right now.

Do have to say, the response from Sparta and Dutch fans on Reddit when we signed him was almost universally impressed and shocked that we had managed to get him for what they considered a relatively low price.

I've never even watched him play so don't take this to the bank, but one random AFCON game from a writer with a possible bee in his bonnet probably shouldn't be seen as ruinous just yet.

That same writer would probably have given WTF a good review...

"Okoye has been popular amongst Nigerian women on social media as they can’t seem to stop gushing over his looks.

In the recent interview, he’s called on Nigerian woman to hit him up and as well revealed the kind of women he finds attractive"

I also call upon Nigerian women to erm, hit me up.

That’s not a great metric and reveals more about United’s defending than De Gea’s goalkeeping. Save percentage or some of the more xG related goalkeeping metrics are better for measuring shot-stopping but even then, shot-stopping is a limited attribute. Modern goalkeeping is just as much about shot-preventing. If a goalkeeper doesn’t claim a cross or sweep up a loose ball higher up the pitch, he might have to make a save instead. De Gea is a great shot-stopper but probably the worst in the league at claiming cross and preventing shots.

Surely that just means he's got a **** defence in front of him? I won't say he's terrible but if I had to pick a keeper for us from the other PL clubs then De Gea wouldn't even be in the top five.
