Why penalise Senegal? This is a club issue.

Indeed we are finding the most ingenious ways to get our AFCON players out on the pitch. Glad Marseille have played along. I''m hearing Sarr has also made a miraculous recovery so Dennis, Sarr & Gueye to start tomorrow.

It really isn’t. It’s a player and agent issue. He should be banned for signing about 10 different deals. Should have happened years ago. I guess the paperwork got lost in a drawer.

Indeed. I'm hearing the issue is that he's due to play for Senegal, Nigeria and Egypt in these finals. Plus Poland in the World Cup.

They're just caught in the crossfire, but since the player was already away from his club and the club wasn't benefitting from him, I can't understand why they didn't sit on the suspension until Senegal's time in the tournament was done. Just plain weird really.

Because it’s the player being sanctioned rather than his club? FIFA suspensions from footballing activity are absolute. Plus there’s an argument Senegal aren’t caught in the crossfire - they’re gaining from a player who appears regularly for Marseille who allegedly shouldn’t be.

He was acting like a ***** when he thought he could just unilaterally tear up a contract and sign for another club. Now the chickens have come home to roost, actually quite proud of the club here.

Yes, it's aimed at the player, but they could have acted on this years ago at this point. The national team are collateral damage that didn't need to happen. Why now instead of weeks ago, so they could call someone else up? Why not ban him right after Senegal are done, given the call up period is over? The choice here was a) impact player, club and nation or b) impact player and club. Since only the latter two are implicated in potential wrongdoing, that seems by far the better solution given how much water already has passed under this particular bridge.

Senegal might well be benefitting from Gueye being at Marseilles (although I reckon that's almost impossible to quantify one way or another), but given that they had nothing to do with the way things have shaken out in terms of the club contract and have been put in a bad position through no real fault of their own, I don't see it holds much relevance even if they have benefitted from it.

It would perhaps be another thing if this situation had arisen fairly recently, but this is year after the fact and it really didn't require action this week, particularly not when the club already has a beef with Senegal. 3 years is a heck of a long time in a footballer's career and it defies reason that this is still dragging on, really, especially when it's now impacting third parties who aren't at fault on this issue.

Hope he sues us, and in a landmark ruling, football's restrictions on players not just giving a month's notice to move clubs is deemed illegal and the whole transfer system is destroyed.

It could be because a ruling was issued today/in the last few days. It wouldn’t be right to suspend him while whatever procedure/litigation as ongoing.

    Also it’s not 3 years - it’s since June 2020.

Was going by the date in the tweet tbh, but whether 3 years or just under 2, FIFA has had ample time to act by now without suddenly imposing a sanction in the middle of a tournament.

Just wait until Gino helicopters into a Morocco game and drags Masina and Louza off the pitch at gunpoint, before flying off.

Can't find the ruling anywhere, but can't think of many other examples where FIFA have banned someone from all football because of a contract dispute so presume our case is very strong. The reports make it sound like perhaps there hasn't been a full ruling yet which would surely make it even more unusual for them to take this step.

Looks like this is the page that FIFA releases rulings but also that they tend to do them in batches every few months: https://www.fifa.com/legal/football-tribunal

I'd agree it seems unlikely that they'd ban someone ahead of a ruling unless the case seemed rock solid. That said, it begs the question of why act pre-emptively at all, really. They're just making a potential rod for their own back...and I'm sure they're aware of that (FIFA are nothing if not good at looking out for themselves), which makes it seem even more likely that this looks like a watertight case for them.

That's why I was looking for the ruling, I assumed it's a decision but is being misreported as a suspension pending investigation...

Some chat on Twitter saying that L'Equipe reckon he's been suspended for six months but that Marseille will try to come to an amicable agreement with us. Unfortunately original article is behind a French paywall so can't say whether that's an accurate summary.

Just for sh1ts and giggles, let’s just presume we are, for once, in the right over one of these litigation matters….

What on earth were Gueye and his new ‘agent’ thinking? Just randomly deciding you don’t like the contract you signed so unilaterally signing one somewhere else!

There's little he can complain about. He was an adult that signed a contract, and a very good one by the sounds of it.

    Odd timing though.

Mirror have suggested we were going to pay him 45k a week!

That seems awfully high for what would have been a young player from the second division of France!

Why do all the articles say we sold him to Marseille 17 hours later? That’s not really what happened is it?
