I will be happy to keep Sema here till the end of the season if it means we get a good defensive midfielder.

I’d rather lose Sema even if we don’t get one.

Talented but too young. Can't improve our team right now.

So why so few first team games for Bordeaux this season per earlier posts ? Was he injured ? Incorrect appearance stats quoted ?

That’s what Koln fans said about Dennis

I watched him more when he pleyed in the Belgian league and the Europa league, and he looks a very good player. At Bordeaux, the manager might not really likes him coupled with the fact he collapsed recently. But the few times I have seen him play for Bordeaux, he still looks very good. And I believe if he comes here, Ranieri will get the best out of him. And besides, if King ever gets injured and we have to play Dennis as a striker. We will still have a good option on the wings with Cucho and Pedro.
If this will be our last signing in this transfer window, it wont be the best move for us except Kayembe is actually a good defensive midfielder.

I think he means 'except if Kayembe is actually a good defensive midfielder', as in if he turns out to magically be one, because Kayembe himself has just listed the positions he can play in an interview with the club and even he didn't include 'defensive midfielder'.

Yep. Another one with the exact same profile of the ones we already have. Just probably not even as average as they are.

Didn’t he say he can play as a 6?

Yeah fairplay, my brain was not computing/translating that - he did say it nestled in amongst being a box-to-box and in a 'more offensive position', though, so it's pretty business as usual there.

I do agree with your overall point though that he’s not quite the right profile for what we need.

I wasn't even saying it as a particular complaint in this instance (though, obviously, it's a legitimate complaint), just as what seemed like further evidence that the poster we were conjecturing about had missed out a word, rather than strongly come out against all received wisdom to date out of nowhere and confidently stated Kayembe is, in fact, a great defensive mid!

Still not what we need. Capoue was not a 6.

If we are going by numbers, we need a No.4 - an out and out DM.

I believe on the continent they call a DM a 6. So that is what he’s saying, I’d imagine.

Why is it not called a Central Defensive Midfielder considering numbers 1-11 are very rarely if ever used in a match these days?

Well said. Numbers of position are almost irrelevant these days.

Because there’s no such thing as a central defensive midfielder. Managers/head coaches refer to players as a number regarding their position

Is 6 not far more traditionally a centre backs number anyway? Most first choice centre backs will be 5 and 6.

I don't see the point in using numbers to define a role when you can just use the actual role. It's more specific and completely removes any confusion.

Doesn’t change the fact that isn’t what he is or has ever been.

Chris Wood could say ‘I know people think I’m a big No.9 but I actually like drifting out to the right-wing and do a really solid job there. Toon fans can look forward to just how fluid a player I am…’

Doesn’t make it any less b0llocks.

Ok, a defensive midfielder then, why not call it that? Do you call a goalkeeper the 1, the right back a 2? Nope, you call them a keeper or a right back.

Well Ranieri says he can play the deeper role. I wouldn't necessarily say Louza has been a defensive midfielder but he has the most interceptions and the second most tackles (Fletch bizarrely the first) per 90 out of the whole squad. If Kayembe can hit those numbers and add a bit more physicality to the role then I'll be more than pleased. His numbers in Belgium this season are more comparable to someone like Sissoko though, but I'm not entirely sure how Eupen have been using him. I should say more comparable to Sissoko for tackles and interceptions, I couldn't be bothered to look into it any further!

I see your point but it sounds from his interview like he played in a deeper role at Anderlecht and in his first season at Eupen. Also I think that there is less of a difference between a deep lying midfielder and an 8 than there is between a 9 and a nimble winger. But I agree clearly he is not primarily/currently a deep lying midfielder.

The difference is there’s only one of them — midfielders there’s different roles within a position. Which is why in interviews — Klopp/Guadiola etc say he’s a 6/8 or 10, and why they don’t really use the concept of formations
