In fairness to them, they were always hamstrung by how much they would have had to sell him for given Utd's sell-on percentage in any transfer, coupled with the fact that they were a one-man team who literally relied on him to stay up for basically every season he's been with them before this current one. Add to that his sulking and desperately trying to force his way out in a public manner, and it was just never going to happen - if anyone was prepared to pay what Palace needed them to, they then still wouldn't have because of Zaha throwing his toys out of the pram and looking like trying to force his way out. Not to mention those massive contract extensions he kept signing completely willingly. The perfect non-transfer storm, really. And, to be fair, they don't look to be suffering for it in the end, anyway.
Been reading the Burnley forum for their take on it. They are actually really pleased with the deal. Apparently it’s £25m and they are looking to get Origi on loan. They’re saying Wood has been dreadful for them this season, so all in all, I think they’re coming out of this deal quite well. £25m for a player over 30 and past his best.
This will will no doubt come back to haunt me so bookmark this for 5pm Saturday, but ASM is very similar to Sarr and Traore, he’s capable of being brilliant but most of the time he isn’t.

Some of the early stuff was negative before they knew all the details. Most of the later pages are positive on the deal. £25m and Origi on loan has swung it. I don’t blame them either. That’s a cracking deal.
Yes but it’s just their fans suggesting Origi (one post from what I can see) I’m happy to suggest him too if it means we sign him instead.

Widely reported his release clause is £20m so I’m not sure where they are getting the extra £5m from? Plus Origi’s deal is up in 6 months so can’t see Liverpool loaning him…what do they get out of the deal?
Ahh okay. Mixed reports then as plenty of media tonight saying Burnley have been powerless to stop the move and weren’t going to sell to a direct rival. I doubt £5m difference would have changed their mind but you never know.
£20m or £25m is small change for Newcastle. They have way more money than sense, although if Wood scored the goals to keep them up it’s probably well spent
Do not insult Sarr with such comparisons. Sarr has 10 goals in 40 PL games compared to 10 in 70 for ASM. And Traore... 7 in 158.
Why has Sarr played in less? Oh yeah...he arrived years after Traore and spent a season in the Championship as part of a relegated team which Saint-Maximin didn't.
Yes and if they go down he will be good there. Probably end up being a back up next season if Newcastle stay up to Wilson and another striker .
A fair point, though at the same time I still don't think Sarr is a great assister; not as it stands, at least. A lot of his crosses are very poor and 'I didn't look up for some inexplicable reason' in fashion.
I'd be astounded if Origi goes to Burnley on loan. He's a cult hero at Liverpool, why would he move to a bag of sh1te like Burnley? Surely he'll be looking for a bigger club. Either way he won't be moving before the end of the window cos he's needed as cover for AFCON.
I've heard it's been suggested on the Burnley and Watford forums now, so there must be some truth to the rumour.

One thing I see repeated over the many seasons of supporting this club is that any team that is better than us at the Vic will nearly always beat us at their place. We drew with Newcastle but they missed some glorious chances and despite being utterly crap up to that point in the season were the better team. New manager, new signings, a far more street wise team, (IE going down easily and crying to the ref), means we're in for a very bad day. Not a cat in h3lls chance of a single point in this one I'm sad to say.
