In total fairness, this is not true in the slightest - he's started every single game for them this season except one, which he was banned from for yellow-card accumulation.

Shouldn’t have used the word ‘somewhat’, fair enough. I know he’s been a regular this season.

I very much stand by my wider point though.

Not sure that’s particularly true either. I am not going to run the numbers but over the last four seasons he has started the vast, vast majority of games in which he hasn’t been injured.

I hope we sign some decent players and not just dip into the European bargain bin.
The problem is that we are not an attractive proposition for an up and coming player, a player looking for a fresh start or a top club looking to loan a player out.

Depends how up and coming. Seriously talented players possibly not.

However if you're an above average Championship player then it would give you a shot at the Prem in a team you may well break into. Under a good coach at present.

Fat Sam had Connor Gallagher and Maitland Niles at West Brom last season.

I think it is more the case that clubs don't want to do business with our owners and our owners are more interested in bargain bin Mogi signings.

Every other bottom half club regularly gets loans from the big clubs of their best promising young players. We haven't had anyone since Ake.

We had Garner on loan last season, although he's crap.

Norwich have Billy Gillmour - highly rated but being blamed for many of their ills.

Not that Garner was any great shakes (he's been better at Forest), or indeed that United have many top youngsters that teams like us should be in for (Henderson is too old to be considered a 'youngster', and he'll have suitors all over the league), but I wonder if how that move panned out burned bridges with them?

Not sure I'd really include him in that category though I am no expert on who are the best players in their academy.

I suppose I am talking more about the likes of Gallagher, Guehi, Gilmour, Ake, Henderson etc.

Not sure we burned any bridges at all. We gave him lots of game time but he wasn't really up to scratch yet despite us being a bit short in midfield we allowed them to recall him so he could move somewhere he would play regularly.

Well at least we did it early in the window if that is the case, although I think it would effectively be acceptance of relegation.

I doubt many clubs were smashing the door down for Kayembe or Samir on Jan 1st.

Henderson is on 150k a week. Simply isn’t going to happen.

What would be the point of signing someone like Kamara, who almost certainly won't stick around if we go down, if we are just settling for relegation? If we signed Samir and Kayembe as Premier League punts, potential Championship stars, I sort of get it, but Kamara is on a different level to them

  17. LeedsOrn

Samir has at least as much pedigree as Kamara.

  18. Burnsy

Let’s wait and see with Kamara. He looks great but why have Nice been happy to freeze him out? Only question mark I have. But he will surely be infinitely better than the LB’s we have - and I’m not sure the other 2 signings can say the same about the players in their positions.

It’s nothing more than fingers crossed from me - and I was/am hoping for signings where we didn’t have to just hope they are better.

  19. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Does he? Nice have been a far better side than Udinese in recent years and Kamara was in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season. Samir hasn’t hit those types of heights in recent seasons.

  20. LeedsOrn

    LeedsOrn Reservist

Yes but Samir was captain at Udinese and a starter week in week out whereas Kamara has dropped out of the side. Serie A is also a stronger league generally so the quality of opposition would have been slightly higher. They are a similar age and Samir has made far more appearances (almost twice as many) in a top league than Kamara.

My main point is if we’re going to group signings based on their quality/experience/likelihood of sticking around, Kayembe is in his own category. Kamara and Samir have similar levels of pedigree and Kayembe is clearly much more of a punt.

They’re all punts with no experience in England, the English game compared to where they’ve all been playing is a complete different beast and a relegation scrap in the mix we will soon see what they’re made of.

I suspect we'll see 1 or 2 more, perhaps another CB (I don't know how long the club has known about Nkoulou being injured until the end of time, but we still seem to be linked with CBs), and one more

Sure, although Nice are flying high in France so I'm not sure it's that much of a question mark. Besides, my point is that he has enough pedigree to reasonably suggest that playing in the Championship is beneath him, unless he has an absolute nightmare this season, I don't see that changing

I hope you are joking Moog?

I think you might be right on the purchasing side, but I certainly hope we shall be offloading some of our dead weight and hopefully we might bring in a QUALITY loan signing or two.

Not that I watch French football at all but Nice got a new manager in and maybe his face didn't fit or he changed the system up? It's all guess work. I believe he was selected for team of the season then obscurity but they've been monitoring him for awhile now and should know what they're getting.
I do watch Serie A though and Samir is a very decent player imo. Just hope he settles quickly because we need him up to speed immediately. He will definitely be the most comfortable centre back with the ball at his feet. I'm just wondering if now it will be three at the back or a five.

He was Utd's reserve captain and had captained England U19s a few times. He is/was amongst the best players in their academy but I'd generally felt he was overrated. He was certainly never rated as highly as say Greenwood was for them in their academy in recent years though.

Part of the issue could be with our scouting and player assessment, as I was convinced Garner wouldn't yet be good enough for a side with our ambitions last season

However, some of your examples of other loan players we've supposedly missed out on don't really support your point:

    - Gallagher first went on loan to the Champ when we were in the Prem, and first to the Prem when we were in the Champ. Then this season Palace would have been more attractive.
    - Guehi, I would have liked last season, though given we had the meanesy defence in the league anyway he wasn't particularly needed.
    - Gilmour is hardly much better than Garner. As with Garner wouldn't have been what we needed.
    - Ake, erm, we did have him on loan!
    - Henderson first went on loan to the Champ when we were in the Prem, then unsurprisingly stayed on loan at the same club when they were promoted. Not sure if we're interested in a loan move in Jan, but someone else like Newcastle will pay more of his mahoosive wages for the privilege.

Im not really talking about specific players and more the profile of player. Palace, West Brom, Villa, Norwich etc have all benefited in recent years from loans of talented academy players who need PL football, but aren't good enough for their parent club so move to top end championship/lower PL experience. Ake was the last time we had anyone comparable and that was donkeys ago. I just can't help but feel some of these players who are young and hungry to impress would be a far better strategy than bringing in players at the back end of their careers like Kucka etc.

Re Garner - maybe it is just the benefit of hindsight but I don't think at the time he was anywhere near the calibre of the other names mentioned there. I think most of the properly talented Man U academy players had already progressed to featuring for the first team like Greenwood. A bit like Chalobah and all his England U23 caps - he was a player who is too good for youth level football, but not really good enough for the step up.

It's kind of an important point though to talk about specific players, otherwise your argument is a complete straw man - we should have signed these hypothetical youth players at this point in time as they would have improved us, except they didn't actually exist or weren't actually available.

There is talk about Kurzawa signing for us even though we already seem to have covered the left side of defence with the players we have already signed and the left sided defenders who were already here.

However there is also talk that Massina & Sema might be going to Udinese and of course of us offloading Rose, therefore the talk about signing Kurzawa might have a ring of truth to it.

If all of that speculation comes to pass we will have two players in Kurzawa & Kamara that you would think will be fighting for the same spot as I believe they have both played left wing and also left back, furthermore they are both meant to be very quick and supposedly box to box players.

This makes me think that we might just play them together in tandem getting them to overlap each other throughout the game. Therefore when one pushes forward the other would sit in at LB, which would have the added bonus of the opposition defence not being sure which of them to mark at any given time.

    Just a thought?

Could see Kurosawa playing with Kamara in a more advanced position

Sort of a left sided dream team, if you will.

I think signing a man who passed away a quarter of a century ago may be a punt too far even for the Pozzos, but then they did sign Danny Rose.

Well Kalu has joined us today and I would not be surprised he if replaces Dennis against Burnley seeing as ED is suspended. I don't know a huge amount about this Kalu guy, but from the stats I have seen on him I have to say he does not look overly impressive to me, but what do I know?

Anyway the incomings have not been so bad so far, but I'm a little concerned about having not offloaded much if any of our deadwood as yet, because we only have about a week left to do it.

It was mentioned on Sky yesterday that Danny Rose has left the club but I have not seen that confirmed anywhere, has anybody else seen confirmation of it?

If he has gone then that is very welcome, but have we offloaded anyone else as yet? Who would like to see go, any suggestions?
