JP just signed a very long term deal and would be guaranteed a starting spot - I would hope he at the very least is one we can hang onto. Maybe Sissokho could be persuaded as well as captain, but wouldn't blame him one bit if he wanted to leave.

Yeah it looks pretty ******* grim. Obivously if they sold Sarr and Dennis they would have some money to reinforce, but I have absolutely no doubt they would spunk it on old useless *****, Udinese reserves and Mogi dross.

Ferguson and Doig yes, Olise not really.

Pedro would attract interest as a good young player so if we’re desperate can see him going .

As said at the top of the post - "It was less a comment specifically on Olise, and more our strategy generally"

You are just ignoring the wider argument and making a slightly pedantic point. My post was about the profile of player rather than those 3 specific players.

Would the players who have just arrived be willing to stick around in the Championship? Kamara has more than enough pedigree to suggest he'd want to play top flight football, Samir perhaps too, although Kayembe, while he's relatively promising, has only done it in a league which is firmly among the second tier of European leagues, and Okoye signed for us firmly in the knowledge that relegation was a possibility.

Would the loanees be up to it as well? If TDB doesn't attract interest elsewhere you'd assume he'd slot right into a Championship team of ours, as would Zinck (in what position I don't quite know), and Pollock has every chance of breaking into our defence (whether he's good enough for Championship level next season is another matter entirely of course!)

    Baah too if fit ?

Replacement for Sarr and we might see Hungbo too.

Wouldn't be massively surprised if any of the 3 new signings have been told they have the option to be loaned to Udinese in the event of a relegation. You would assume that Okoye would stick around - probably very little difference in quality between the championship and a lot of the Eredivisie.

Dont think either TDB or (to a lesser extent) Zinc are really good enough to be starting regularly for side pushing for promotion. There are a few like Pollock, Mebude, Hungbo, Baah, Dahlberg who would probably be given a chance to prove themselves, but again can't see any of them (bar maybe Pollock?) being anything other than bench fodder / loans unless the situation really is dire.

TDB has been excellent for Reading, they were doing quite well before the points deduction, they're in a bit of a crisis now, but I wouldn't put it down to him at all, he'd deserve the chance to prove himself. Agreed on Zinck, but he'd be a useful squad option at least (if he fancies it, maybe he doesn't want to essentially be back where he started with us). Dahlberg is certainly one of the more promising loanees, but if we've just signed Okoye for a significant fee it's difficult to envisage Dahlberg getting into the team straight away, probably a mid-table Championship loan next season. Pollock will probably be a squad player, as will Hungbo, but Baah, Mebude and Phillips will probably have to stick around in League 1. I think there'll be a lot of upheaval next season if we go down, but I don't think we'd need to panic, we had some proper woeful matchday squads last season yet we never dropped out of the playoffs and went up fairly comfortably when we started fielding proper teams

Yes, with the most expensive player in the history of the division starting in attack for us.

I don't think we'd have a bad squad for the Championship even before adding some players with funds from selling Sarr, Dennis and JP. I think Kamara is probably too good to stay in the Championship along with Sissoko and King as well.

Okoye, Dahlberg, Ngakia, Cathcart, Sierralta, Pollock, Kayembe, Louza, Etebo, TDB, Cleverley, Phillips, Zinckernagel, Baah, Cucho, Fletcher and Hungbo isn't a bad group to build from.

I’d say that’s a non playoff squad personally. Even with a couple of additions. Don’t think Etebo will sign on a perm if we go down to be honest.

And even he was mostly crap for almost half a season. I'd predict a top 6 finish with our current squad minus the obvious leavers plus a couple of recruits

Well he didn't play against Middlesbrough or Birmingham, and we won both of those. Besides, even in those games where we had Sarr, we didn't have a left-back, we barely had a midfield for the entire first half of the season, and Sarr himself was hardly tearing up trees

Of those listed I don’t think Etebo will join permanently (he didn’t fancy the Championship with Stoke) and Cucho will probably have suitors in Spain where he has a bigger reputation.

The others I agree with though and think it’s not too far off a top-6 team. The Championship last season was absolute g***.

The fact that according to AL in his latest Athletic article, this chap has not played 90 minutes for what will be just over two months when the Newcastle game comes around, doesn't fill me with the greatest confidence in the world that he will be an immediate saviour. Textbook recruitment. Thrown into a tough 90 minute scrap immediately shouts out injury ahoy.

Ultimately I think the important thing next season, whatever league we're in, is to get our transfer dealings sorted early, we got away with it last season because we had some unbelievable players for the Championship (who we might not have been able to hold on to were it not for a unique set of circumstances), if we go down this season we won't have anyone of the calibre of Sarr or Will Hughes to bail us out. Even without the players who will be linked with moves, there is some potential in our possible Championship squad, but we're gonna need some reinforcements or else we'll have the joys of seeing Kucka blow out of his arse after 5 minutes again lol

Yes, no Covid cheat codes this time around when we go down, so no keeping players we wouldn’t ordinarily be able to. Not to mention Sarr will have two years left on his contract in the summer, so he’ll be getting sold no matter what.

Morris had never played 90 minutes of senior football in his life and yet hes still probably acquitted himself better than Rose or Masina have managed for most of the season.

Its not like he hasn't been in training either as far as I can tell so he should be fit. He was presumably just not risked for the last 2-3 games because we were in talks to sign him.

Regarding Etebo I think it was an obligation to buy but I can't be bothered to check. Plus I'm not sure if that's only activated if we stay up.

I think it was ~ £2m obligation if we stay up. At that kind of price I don’t know why we used up a loan slot.

Presumably there'd have been a bigger fee had we just bought him up front? Or maybe we didn't want the scenario which Stoke found themselves in where he was unwilling to play for them in the Championship?

The best players that we have a serious chance of holding on to would be the likes of JP and Cucho who aren't guaranteed starters for us in the Prem, at a push Sissoko and King because of their age. Despite the absolute shambles defensively this season, Dennis has been great, and Sarr has been decent so hopefully we'd be able to get an auction going for them, albeit I'm under no illusions that only a small amount of the probably fairly sizeable amount of money we'd be receiving would be reinvested in the squad

And so were we! I believe the difference of not being able to turn to him to freak the fucck out of opposition defenders/teams, and end up scoring double figure goals, will be telling if it comes down to it next season. We were rarely a 'good' team last season, and at least two of our three or four most important players were Premier League level players who will be playing there next season. We won't have that next time. I'm dubious enough about those new recruits as it stands, and I am certainly pessimistic when it comes to current leavers. I don't think we'll be able to keep anyone of current worth, to be honest, but obviously only time will show whether I'm being realistic or fatalist.

Will be happy if we sign him permanently. He is too good for the Championship so I really don't know if he will like to stay if we get relegated. Am expecting big performance from him when he returns from injury though. He Sissoko and a defensive midfielder will make our midfield perfect.

You just can’t help but feel from his interview that he’s going to work hard but be well short of what we need.

I bet he’s on loan at CSKA Sofia within 12 months.

And I don’t even say that as any particular criticism of him. But he labels himself as a particular profile of player - yet you can forgive yourself for being sure that we have brought in him in to be something he’s not, so we can cut corners.

Why? Because it does Gino’s mate a favour, greases both of their pockets and has a 5% chance of coming off.

We do it to protect ourselves. I do it to stop myself being hurt by Pozzo. I’m the forum equivalent of Bianca from Eastenders.

Being serious, this is just Pozzo sorting his agent mate out though isn’t it at the expense of the team?

Let’s not wander down that rabbit hole! This forum and talking about Watford is no indication of real life!

I’m perfectly happy and life is good for me right now, as I hope it is for everyone else on here. But I will speak as I feel/find on the relatively minor, but enjoyable, aspect of my life that is ‘Watford FC’. It has no bearing on my life when I wake up or go to sleep! Making a comment on a relatively crap midfielder is hardly reason to tell someone they are on a downer and need to cheer up!

Dunno. But why would Pozzo enter into an arrangement where he had to throw money for random **** players at an agent ? He’s an intelligent businessman. He must feel he’s getting value from the relationship somehow ? He can’t just be happily throwing money away ?
