With the owners view that defenders can and will play for us until they are 35+, surely signing a defender for the next 10 odd years for £10m isn't that bad an investment. I don’t particularly rate any of the Liverpool castoffs but I fully imagine he’ll be decent enough for our ****** defence.

I’d rather this over some past it defender stinking up the Turkish retirement league.

We need to stop joking about this and get it moving soon.

A bunch of us moaning about a **** club with about 10k active fans would easily be more popular than Joe Rogan.

If we give him a 12 year contract we can amortise the fee over the period as a diminishing asset and write that off against tax so it effectively costs us nothing.

Or something. I don't understand accountancy talk, but we're getting into the weeds with a partner from PWC on this week's pod!

Should have a recurring section. “28 seconds later”, when guests only have half a minute to rage wide eyed about everything idiotic the ownership have done before they get cut off.

“wait I’m down to 3 seconds? F@@@ing JANMAAT CONTRACT EXTENSION!”

I still say someone tipped them off and that’s why he got 8 seconds at the end and inadvertently declared his love for the way the club was run.

So when does the Sarr connection come into play here ?
We've signed Salu, we've got Dennis, Pedro and Cucho doing OK on flanks, so if we really want Phillips now is the time to bring Sarr into the equation.?
    Or is that naive thinking.?

It seems a fair enough deal to me. I like the look of Phillips and I reckon he has the attributes to be a very good defender for us. But 15 million is a big gamble for us as he has hardly played any top flight games and when he has it has been for one of the best teams in Europe, it's a completely different proposition playing for us because we are crap and are made to defend plenty more than Liverpool are. I wouldn't mind loaning him with an option to buy for 15 million as he may well be worth it but 15 million up front we should certainly be looking elsewhere.

It’s obviously inevitable that Sarr will leave at some point. It’s also unquestionable that we need a quality centre back.

But if we are prepared to sacrifice Sarr now to get Nat Phillips, then Gino would be even stupider than I thought.

Give them first option on Sarr in the summer or even agree a price now but complete the deal after the season finishes

Again, that type of deal just isn’t something Gino does. He will want an auction and plenty of interest in Sarr to drive the price as high as possible and get the best possible instalment deal.

Setting a price for a player now when there’s 6 months of the season to go? I wouldn’t.

Also, Liverpool are well known for low-ball offers and upsetting other clubs. Not sure it’s the type of agreement I’d go into them with.

I wouldn’t be mentioning Sarr’s name anywhere near a deal for a slightly-above-average Nat Phillips. If Liverpool want to overvalue him, we shouldn’t be sacrificing anything to bring that down.

I'm not sure there will be much of an auction given he's going to miss a large chunk of the season. I would name a price and say to Liverpool you have first dibs at this price, if you don't want to pay that then fine, we move on. I don't know enough about Phillips to know if he's worth it but £15m for a guy that has barely played seems ludicrous. I would thin teams would learn after they flogged Brewster for £20m

If Liverpool offered us £35m+Phillips for Sarr to join in the summer I'd be very tempted. He's a good player but he's not exactly a youngster anymore, but still has questionable decision making. Also you never know how players who rely on pace will return from certain injuries.

Thats roughly what I was thinking. We overpaid for Sarr, great speed on the counter but overall doesn't do enough over 90 minutes, is moody, and still unproven at Prem level.
Watching Kalu on YT I reckon he's got more in him than Sarr. Has the club given any real update on Sarr's fitness, I can't work out if he's weeks away (acc to Senegal) or months away in reality...?

Bournemouth agreed a fee with City for Ake in advance - basically as a means of offsetting the risk of price decline should they go down. I’d be open to us doing something similar but a) Liverpool do lowball quite often as you say and b) I think the market for Phillips is quite limited and the player wants to move on so I agree that it doesn’t make too much sense to link the two.

We should offer them two options: £10m straight transfer or £2m loan + £11m obligation in the summer linked to us staying up and Phillips playing enough games. Otherwise I think there are better options out there in this price bracket.

Dennis has come in for a fraction of what we paid for Sarr and has looked far better. If we go down I think we'll do very well to get north of £25m for Sarr and it'll only be that much because of his reputation.

Is there something that curses Watford fans to always talk down really talented players, yet cling on to hard working players like they're world beaters?

I'm not sure what more you want him to do over 90 minutes but the moody comment in particular I just find baffling. He put his head down since he got here, not kicked up a fuss even after being dispatched to the Championship and is obviously a shy bloke. He manages 90 minutes almost every time he plays, doesn't pick up stupid yellow cards or say stupid things in the media. He also has to play with our bunch of misfits and is on his 6th head coach (+ Mullins twice).

I don't think he's unproven at Prem level either. I reckon probably 16 other clubs would sign him tomorrow given the chance.

Absolutely no way would I criticise Sarr's attitude, he's even willing to dig in and track back and defend when need be, I think we perhaps expect a bit much from him at times as he's always been a bit of a speed merchant for us. Mind you, despite the times he is anonymous, he still produces the goods frequently enough to win us points

It’s not binary with Sarr, he’s still got time to improve. He’d be a significantly player if he used his best attribute as much as possible. Far too often he has games were he refuses to use his pace and take on the opposition fullback, it’s very odd but could be down to poor coaching.
