I agree, but that’s the reason I made the Danny Rose reference as Levy is the same as Liverpool. We all know Liverpool overvalue their players, so as much as we’ve bid £7m for him it doesn’t make it any more likely they’ll accept it.

It won’t. Plenty of clubs after CB’s. Someone will come close enough to what Liverpool want and do a deal.

At what? In this instance I think that's top whack for this no mark and we should thank the scousers very much for saying no and move on to our next target.

Hey not a bad effort from a gooner :D Pablo Mari up next :eek:
Low ball offers that are not taken seriously. I have no idea how good he is but I can safely say he'd probably make our team better, which isn't difficult.

Maybe - it doesn't currently seem like many clubs are considering it as there is better value elsewhere.

It just seems to be a recurring thing with Liverpool. People praise their ability to sell their squad players for massive sums, but omit the losses they take on declined offers for players who end up leaving on a free.

It's well documented that Liverpool are willing to wait until the end of the window to get the best offer they can. Can't see Gino going any higher than £9m, possibly rising to £10m if we stay up. Doubtful this one will happen.

We will only be able to buy him if no-one else with a bigger cheque book wants him which we won't know until c31st Jan.
We can't wait that long and risk not getting him so time to move on.

Nat Phillips is never going to play for Liverpool yet they're rejecting £7m for a guy that would have been released into obscurity had they not had an injury crisis.

£12m for Harry Wilson too. We got Deulofeu for that.

Classic Liverpool. If/when we go down I expect they'll offer £15m for Sarr/Dennis and think we're being unreasonable for rejecting it.

What about we throw in first refusal on Sarr when we get round to selling?

    £900,000 for John Barnes.

And that's after his world cup wondershow, where he nearly beat Argentina on his own (and probably would have if Lineker had scored that header).

An absolute steal. We were still a small club. They didn't need to do that. They could have paid something a bit nearer his true valuation instead of sticking it to us. Not even a poxy million.

I've never forgiven 'em for that, me. People talk about them stealing hubcaps, but that was much, much worse.

If he's not better than Dawson then we don't want him.

I’m honestly not sure if he is. This season’s version of Dawson is far better than anything we have that’s for sure.

I don't want him anywhere near this club just for the fact he refers to himself as "Nat". What kind of self respecting Nathan/Nathaniel does that?

    Pathetic.

I've seen this argument for nearly 35 years. Why would Liverpool have offered to pay more than they absolutely had to? The system in place at the time gave them a very strong hand. There was a specific set of circumstances that put Watford in a corner with their backs against the wall when it came to Barnes's inevitable departure. Barnes's contract was expiring and so, if the two clubs had not agreed a valuation the transfer would have gone to the infamous tribunal process. There was a set of criteria that would be taken into account when the panel set the fee and they were – the price the selling club had originally paid for the player (in Barnes's case a set of kit), the value of his previous contract, and the value of any contract offer the player had rejected. Watford offered Barnes as much as they felt they possibly could – which would have made him by far the highest paid player –

Watford tried, without success, to get a bit of an auction going – speaking to the two north London clubs and trying to capitalise on some interest from Italy (chiefly from Sven Goran Eriksson, who was leaving Roma and going to Fiorentina). Barnes wasn't interested in either London club so that restricted the options somewhat.

All in all, a very unsatisfactory outcome, especially when the other transfers that summer included, as you say, Beardsley for £1.9m. But, on the flip side Watford got six years out of a near world-class talent and messed up, to an extent, by not extending his contract sooner.

I was watching SSN about an hour ago and I'm pretty sure they said that Nat Phillips is available on loan? If that is true that could be interesting for us.

I’m just not sure if this guy is ready to walk into an under fire defence alongside another brand new CD or whether he is still in development, despite his age, due to his inexperience. Defending for Liverpool is a million miles away from defending for us.

I'm far from an expert on the going rates of players these days but I hope we tell Liverpool to shove it and shop elsewhere. He is nowhere near good enough for the money they are asking. I think the business we have done looks decent enough on paper and the fees of around £5 million is on par for us at the moment. I'm always inclined to a free transfer/bargain but it's when the entire defence didn't cost a penny and wonder why we are in a relegation battle.
Apart from Del Boy I can think of one player the pozzos have signed over 10 million that was actually good value for money. Pereira is probably close to this but was good for a season but so inconsistent

Liverpool are like a client I used to have in an old job. He sold Scottish shellfish, except the shellfish was bought from Asia, parked in Scotland for a couple of months and sold at a massive premium mostly back to rich Asian clients who wanted Scottish shellfish.

TBF LFC actually delayed their bid for a year until his contract ended. I've still never actually got my head around this. I know at that time the league was LFC and everyone else but...

If he is available on loan I think that West Ham, Newcastle and Burnley (if Tarkowski does end up leaving) will probably all be after him and I can't see us offering a higher loan fee than those clubs or him choosing to come to us

  35. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

Would’ve also thought a loan will only happen at the end of the window if they can’t sell him, so not much good for us if we can get someone else in earlier
