Bookies didn’t seem to see that coming and I won a couple of hundred quid live betting on that outcome.

Well done to Max. Shouldn’t let that manufactured ending overshadow a deserved world championship.

And on the upside Lewis drove fairly on that final lap. Think we all know if roles were reversed Max would have punted him off.

That is messed up. Not watching that **** show again. F1 had a chance to attract new viewers and ****ed it up with a ridiculous decision. Just not right. A bollix of a sport.

What? That was great. Basically a Super Over in the Cricket World Cup.

Yay. Hamilton lost, just noticed on BBC Sport. Justice after the early race shocker decision.

How can they say that they aren't going to let the backmarkers pass, then change their mind at the last second?

The rules were broken, as Massey decided that Max was to win the title. And so it happened.

I'd like to see how much his bank balance has improved after today, a rather convenient safety car for Verstappen don't you think o_O

Brilliant season and thoroughly entertaining last race!

Such a late call to let those lapped cars through.

If you were offered a one-lap shootout, the world would have taken it.

Verstappen still had to get past Hamilton and he did. Hamilton needed a bit of Perez's defensive driving there.

Plus, if Sky are right, then only letting the 5 cars between Max and Lewis unlap themselves before bringing the SC in.

WWE has more believable title deciders than that.

No way. Completely impossible to defend fairly given the tyre differential and because Hamilton couldn’t afford contact (which also applied in the Perez situation too).

An alarmingly implementation of the rules that makes a mockery of a sport. The rules applied in a reckless and biased way.

The thing is, there was no reason the cars couldn't have been released sooner. The original decision to keep the cars there was wrong, Latifi's car had been moved 2 laps before... Because they dragged it out and flip-flopped at the last second, it meant there wasn't enough time to do it properly.

I wonder if Toto's ridiculous message to Masi earlier in the race ('No safety car please') factored in? After a message like that he'd look very sussed allowing a few cars to park in between the front runners.

Well I thought it was ****ing entertaining.

Not something you could say about F1 a lot for a very long time.

I thought Hamilton would win by a margin - he is so good at getting everything out of tyres - but Latifi had other plans.

    Lewis will return even stronger.

It was never going to come down to a penalty though, was it? Hamilton did nothing wrong there. He just ran out of road and then waited for direction from the stewards on whether to give the place back. They told Merc to give back the advantage and he did to their satisfaction.

I stopped watching around mid 2000s having watched it religiously in the 80 90s and early 2000s. Alain Prost was my favourite, the Professor :)

That's race strategy TVOR. He also has had one of the most dominant cars/teams in recent years as well. But that is the sport.

Anyway Timo Glock muddled up his own tyre strategy which helped Hamilton squeeze past Massa back in 2008.

Very underrated driver. Presumably down to his lack of overt charisma as with Lauda.

You say that was race strategy, it was either bribery or sheer luck that Verstappen had the chance to fit those tyres nothing to do with strategy what so ever .

Massey clearly thinks his role is to create the most amount of excitement, rather than to fairly implement the rules.

You can't let some lapped cars pass and not others. It's bonkers. You either make the statement that lapped cars can pass, or you make the statement that they cannot. Allowing just the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to pass is ludicrous.

I didn't find the last lap exciting to watch, as Hamilton was a sitting duck. Masi can't say that Max on fresh softs against Hamilton on 40 lap hards, is just giving them the chance to race. Max probably had at 2 seconds on him.

Not overrated to me. Senna was overhyped yet when they were teammates it was 2-2. And was also taken out by Senna when with Ferrari. He gave up F1 at the right time saying more automatic controls wasnt the same and would also make racing more dangerous. Senna died in Prost's team car after his retirement.

Mercedes chose keeping Hamilton out to keep track position. In hindsight which is always a wonderful thing they did not anticipate Latifi running off. And Wolff having a subtle dig at the race director is indicative of a real arrogance within the team as well as a desire to win. F1 with the storied budgets of a few teams as in many other team sports has led to a stratification of grid positions and winners. One hopes rule changes will make that less so.

Both teams have spent the last 6 months digging at Masi over the radio and openly putting pressure on him. I think they’ve worked out he’s weak and are circling like sharks. Trying to pretend it’s just a Mercedes thing is frankly silly talk.

This will roll for weeks yet. It was like watching wrestling as it was so fixed at the end, but fair play, edge of the seat stuff which is how to attract new fans and exactly what they want.

Not a fan of Max but congrats to him, hope next year is as close.

I'm sure there will be appeals from both teams. There is a growing sense of bad blood between the two. Both drivers detest each other and don't even like looking each other in the face.
