I have wondered a number of times today whether someone has trawled footage over the last few days to find this video.....or has someone been sat on it for a whole year just waiting for the 'perfect' time to drop it?
I suspect it is the latter. The obvious motive is to damage Johnson and the government's credibility. But it also undermines the message on covid restrictions. It's been apparent for a few days that "plan b" was on it's way. This is perfect ammunition for the "libertarians" to promote the message "if they don't keep to the rules then why should I?". It will be telling if the source of the footage is ever found but it wouldn't surprise me if it is someone who is on the anti-vaccine side of the argument.
On calling for Boris to resign, it just doesn’t make political sense does it? BJ is becoming one of labours biggest assets agent he next election if he stays. Sadly I think Rishi would mean they win easily again.
Sunak has little substance. He’s easy on the eye, a hero when giving out free money or meals, but on the stump he would be brittle. Boris is a winner and without him the whole loose new Tory thing falls apart, Brexit falls apart etc etc. Boris needs to go because he could easily win again. So many boomers have invested so much in him.
Sunak could win a General Election if he made it clear he would clear the decks - Raab and Pritti Patel nowhere to be seen - but how does he square that within the party and without the power of being an 'elected by the electorate' PM? General Election yes, but could he even win a leadership battle first? I'm not so sure. It could well be the Sunak is the early favourite - that would get overtaken by someone else promising to keep the status quo. Can't lose sight of just how much Johnson won their leadership battle by.
Amazing to see that this characterless, spineless, shameless halfwit ever became PM in the first place. Reflects very badly on the electorate. Thick as mince most of them and with the memory span of a goldfish. No wonder the politicians always feel so comfortable.
He got Brexit done. He has that to his credit. Not sure that this is something for the left or anyone else to celebrate. Far as I can tell, it is the right that has done this to him, and it is all a part of trying to draw the Government further to the right. Boris, in my opinion, is paying for being the front man of the most left leaning tory Government ever, and this fiasco is only going to make it easier for those further to his right (which, to be fair, is relatively moderate, and demonstrably liberal) to get their way in the scheme of things. Maybe it will turn out OK. Maybe it won't.
I don’t think the gambit of Starmer remaining the serious person as a contrast to Johnson is a bad one. At some point the joke wears thin with a clown like Johnson.
Yes, I agree. But, as I said a few weeks ago, if the Tories replace the clown with a more serious contender before the next election then the Tory faithful will return and Labour will be back to square one. My prediction remains that Johnson will be gone in the new year and the woes of these last few years will be blamed on him and his administration by the "new" Tory Government. It is a playbook that they have used successfully so many times before that I have little doubt it will work again.
So why has Allegra Stratton fallen on her sword but none of the others in the room (such as Ed Oldfield) have done so?
Rookery Mike sums it up perfectly on his Twitter. The tories are a disgrace who only serve themselves. The sooner the electorate wake up and smell the coffee the better.
So the Met police won't investigate the alleged parties at Downing Street due to lack of evidence? I thought the whole point of a police investigation is to gather evidence. Do the police only carry out an investigation if they already have enough evidence to prosecute any allegation now? If so, what is the point of the police?
She is a sacrificial lamb, the thing is her resignation confirms that the party happened as why would you resign over something that didn't occur? The Tories have basically trod on a rake akin to Sideshow Bob by letting her resign.
There’s a paragraph I thought I’d never read. Are they doing a FTRE Political Special? I’d love to know how Leventhal feels about Plan B.
I agree. People are not generally thick. However I would say that many (most?) people are not aware of the political processes in this country which is a failing of our education system. It should be a compulsory subject at school. I would also argue that many (most?) people are not politically engage to any serious degree. I don't blame them. The politicians and modern politics are not the most inspiring things at the moment. I think PMQs is the perfect example of what is wrong with UK politics and why many (most?) people are turned off by it.
"Sources suggest the owners are happy with Plan B and have no plans to strengthen restrictions in January. However, if the right variant comes along they might be tempted into the market. Rumours that Josh Doig will form part of the government's plan are though believed to be wide of the mark."
I wouldn't count on it. When he gets asked about pensioners with troubles, and those who have to look after their disabled family members who are having benefits cut, he frequently ignores the question and starts talking about investment in jobs. Whether that behaviour definitely gets him over the line, I'm not so sure.
Tories fined 18k by the Electoral Commission as report shows that previous report by Boris pal was cobblers. Of course Boris new precisely who paid for the renovations. And yes many of these issues, the flat, the endless paid for holidays, the three parties under investigation are small beer in themselves. So stop lying about them. Until Boris understands that standards matter this will rumble on. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59591917
ITV News has just reported on the birth of Boris’s second child. In 18 years time, Boris: no sweetheart, we didn’t keep any of the newspapers from the day your were born, sorry.
More details emerge. Top Number 10 adviser addressed staff at Downing Street Christmas party and gave out awards. We had a similar party, online, including with awards, from the comfort of our own homes. I could have photocopied my arse in the usual fashion, but I didn’t want to upset the cat. http://news.sky.com/story/top-numbe...rty-which-is-now-under-investigation-12491097
