Those afflicted suffer a massive rise in body temperature causing them to remove their upper body clothing.

Being required to mask up in certain settings equated to totalitarian rule by weirdos who have happily never experienced totalitarian rule.

If this lady is right then potentially this variant might have the same sort of impact COVID has had generally ?

Most get mild symptoms but maybe more serious for those who are vulnerable.

Sorry to hear that VoR and I genuinely hope all goes well with your treatment.
Mrs D caught covid bang in the middle of her chemo in January this year and even though she showed not a single sign of having anything wrong with her it caused merry h*ll with her hospital appointments.

Just read that the new variant is an anagram of moronic.

Yeah, it has been circulating on and off for over a year now. Unfortunately it's unattributed bolleaux. I've even seen some very pro-mask, pro-every possible intervention going medical folk on Twitter say it's unhelpful because it massively overstates the benefits.

Even if the numbers in the graphic are wrong, I don't think it could be argued that wearing a mask is better than not, provided people use masks correctly and don't fiddle with them all day long.

Probably depends on what mask you have as well.

Some are better than others of course .

No need for the strawman Otter. I'm just saying if the sole purpose of the graphic is to present the numbers, they should be right. But for me it's more the fact it's unattributed that's bothersome. There doesn't appear to be any study behind it. And 'German doctors are sharing this' is barely a step removed from the 'I gave a lift to a hitchhiker with an Irish accent last night and as he got out the car he thanked me and told me to avoid Piccadilly Circus tomorrow night' nonsense that used to do the rounds.

The 'red list' is utterly pointless. Banning travel to and from South Africa will have little or no impact on the spread of the Moronic variant. The only thing that could prevent it arriving here is to close our borders completely but (hopefully) not even Boris and his pals are daft enough to do that.
And good luck to anyone with school age children! Looks like they're going to be at home 'self isolating' again as soon as one of their class mates sneezes. Ludicrous

Now it's here, there and every farking where you're right there's no need for the red list to be operating.

I'd like to think there's a strategy behind this by the government. They want to show they can take tough action early enough, almost as a drill just in case an actual doomsday variant pops up, but in three weeks time will have the guts to concede this isn't the variant to build the barricades for and the restrictions announced this weekend are dropped completely. Despite the howls from some quarters that would go a long way to showing the folk who have a tendancy to just go with the flow that now is the time to normalise (and from spring completely downscale) our response to Covid.

Unfortunately we know that's wishful thinking.

I thought that they literally don't know whether this variant is the "doomsday" variant or not.

In a couple of weeks they should know how effective, or not, the current vaccines are. If they are ineffective it will probably take a few months to create a new vaccine.

In the meantime I think the government are right to treat this new variant seriously. I think they could have done better in their initial response. Letting the arrivals on Friday from south African countries to freely travel to their final destinations was a mistake. And I think the mask mandate should be expanded to hospitality venues and people should, where possible, be encouraged to work from home for a few weeks.

But hopefully you are correct and in 2 or 3 weeks it will be shown that the current vaccines are effective and we can get back on the road to normality.

The variant being more widespread than was thought a few days ago is not a good reason imo for providing it a path with no obstacles.

If last year taught us anything it was that time is valuable. Efforts to lockdown were rewarded with a vaccine.

Delay the spread of this variant, even though sceptics will sob about how imperfect the measures are, and we will soon know whether it is much of a threat and have boosters to match.

What is the endgame of your let it rip philosophy, which has produced almost no variant of its own since last March? Is it simply a calculus that restrictions will kill or debilitate more people than the virus?

You remember dear, the vaccine, against Covid? You were probably one of the first along with that lady in Coventry.

I simply mean that during lockdown some argued that we shouldn’t bother with lockdown etc because a vaccine was years away. Well it was good we did and a shame we didn’t a couple of weeks earlier.

I - admittedly of proven almost zero medical knowledge fame around these parts - would expect serious alarm in southern Africa and probably a hospitalisation/body count to match it if this Omicron was the one. Instead we have pretty minor symptoms reported and at least some medics with first-hand experience of the variant giving slightly bemused interviews to journalists over here. Obviously there's a more sophisticated analysis needed to model the impact it'll have on the efficacy of the vaccines, but if it's anything short of it substantially circumventing them all, we should resume normal life in my view. We have novel treatments we didn't have in March 2020, an element of natural immunity too.

I don't think the government could put in place the measures you're suggesting without knowing more either. It works both ways. 'Crying wolf' over the wrong variant would be much, much more damaging to the ability of the government to respond if a big one did pop up. And that's how I think it would be seen given how bored many people are with the pandemic.

I think I'd extend that to 'harm more people' as that covers more than simply physical symptoms, but yes, that's essentially it. Hopefully once people start having to pay for PCR tests from next spring we'll start to move on as a society. We certainly need to monitor the spread of Covid in some parts of society (care homes, hospitals etc) but that's what we already do with flu, norovirus etc and with the likelihood of an annual vaccination programme for Over 50s (?) starting from next autumn I think we're well set to end this within months.

C19 is currently much more damaging than Flu. There isn’t a well documented ‘long flu’ and typical Flu outbreaks don’t kill as many people even without lockdowns.

That may change as the virus does, but this would appear to have a bit more life in it yet and Governments should act accordingly and not because people are bored.

In any case, anti-vaxxers will (ironically) keep the focus on it up by getting badly ill.

I’m expecting there to be a reaction at some point from those who have taken the vaccine but who don’t understand statistics. For example if the current vaccines are shown to be ‘only’ 70% effective against Omicron as compared to 90% against Delta (figures made up by me) there will be much consternation that it’s not good enough, not realising that vaccines for other viruses are less effective than that.
