I see there is a Press conference at 5.

No doubt all news will be leaked before then as usual!

Boris to reassure the nation that he's been fully briefed. The briefing paper explained that Peppa loves shopping but Daddy Pig snuck a chocolate cake into the trolley. Naughty Daddy Pig.

I believe he is specifically going to advise whether Mrs TuT and I can fly to Kenya on Friday. A simple email or WA would have done.

At least with his insistence on sprinkling almost every speech with totally unnecessary classicisms, we can feel reassured he'll be right on top of whatever each variant is called...

There’s a new mutation appearing up north. There’s an outbreak of Abbots Langley in Scotland. Scary stuff.

There’s a lot of ‘mights’ in this press conference from the three amigos. Bless ‘em. The fact they’re thinking face coverings alone are going to do anything at all just shows the incoherence. Not a single country around the world has reduced Covid spread by making them mandatory, yet politicians of the ‘do something’ type seem to be obsessed with them.

And remember folks, get tested and you too can run spin the roulette wheel to see if you and your loved ones will have to isolate or not. What a Christmas incentive that is!

Will this virus ever die off? Is it going to hang around for the rest of our lives - and even our children and their children will have to face restrictions, possible local and global lock downs? It's like fighting
against something we cannot even see, so will it always be here?

Time to panic again and slowly introduce restrictions to ruin everyone's lives because there's a new variant that may or may not be a problem, and as far has no real real world evidence to prove the former.

Bizarre. No doubt we'll be in full lockdown again right before Christmas.

Hopefully it will end up like the flu - in that there will be a vaccine each winter for those who need one without the need for restrictions etc .

Obviously not, but shutting down businesses and entire industries certainly does, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's where we end up being a month or so from now once the hysteria is back in full flow.

In fact the early evidence from South Africa indicates it causes mild disease and no significant uptick in hospitalisations.

I think we can all agree it’s the right time to reintroduce masks. And, to prove my absolute belief in them, here’s a link to my online shop selling them at £12.50 a pop… #lovetheNHS #maskup

I do think a full lockdown and restrictions would be a step too far.

I mean we have all been vaccinated for a reason.

It does seem very much like dejavu, the difference 12 months later being that we’ve all been vaccinated (or at least those that want to be) and there is no furlough anymore.

I struggle to see how they could shut things like shops and pubs again with no support, when this is when they make the vast majority of their income, but nothing would surprise me with this government, and they’ve now got the perfect scapegoat just like they had with the Kent variant.

It’s deeply frustrating to see every news outlet reporting on it by saying it may be more transmissible and it may be cause more serious illness, when in fact there is no evidence of this and in fact the opposite may apply.

Wouldn’t it be more responsible to report it the other way round? By stating from the outset there is no evidence it is either more transmissible or more serious?

Why is that more responsible? Isn’t encouraging people to be cautious a responsible thing to do, until we have more information?

But remember bad news, not good news, gets clicks.

True, I could have written ‘it’s the right time to reintroduce the legal requirement to wear them in a small number of settings’, but it might have diluted my point a little.

And you’re right that an ever-decreasing minority have continued wearing them. It’s generally been a happy medium over the past 6 months, aside from the odd fruitcake on either side, but I dare say this latest development will cause more unnecessary flashpoints.

I tend to agree that it seems a bit pointless. It would actually make more sense to reinvigorate WFH.

Don’t think it’s a “ever-decreasing minority” though. Not in my experience. Almost everyone I work with wears one, for example.

I’m simply applying the weekly and scientifically-unimpeachable ‘Lidl test’ to say it’s a decreasing minority.

Have there been any deaths from this new variant yet?

Although I was double jabbed I tested positive for Covid a couple of months ago after returning from a holiday abroad and taking the 2 day compulsory test. I had no symptoms other than a bit of a sniffle that I would have put down to the slight cold that I normally get when returning from a warm country to our colder climate. However I still served my 10 day quarantine sentence even though I did not feel particularly unwell at all.

Has anyone else tested positive for Covid, and if you have did you suffer badly from it or were you similar to me, which was basically OK.

Lets face it even though some do get very ill or even die either directly or indirectly by contracting this illness the vast majority who have been vaccinated do not. Therefore is it not time that Covid is down graded to the same status as influenza because basically the same overall consequences apply to that illness, and the only difference is that the world does not stop because of it.

In other words lets just treat Covid like Influenza by having our 6 monthly or annual jabs and get on with our every day lives and stop the current over reaction to it, because the overall consequences of Covid, including death rates, are basically no worse than that of Influenza.

This is not true though. Regardless of the death rate vs flu (last I saw it was higher for covid tough the fact everyone is recently vaccinated now may have changed that) covid, especially Delta and the new variant are hugely more contagious.

That means of we treated it like the flu, hospitals would be overloaded in a couple of weeks and multiple thousands of people would die every day, regular hospital treatments would be postponed and the country would grind to a halt because about 20% of the country would ask be ill within 2 weeks or so.

The fact you were double vaccinated and still got ill should show you that it is something to take seriously

My point is that I was not ill it was just a sniffle and I am a type two diabetic and I am also currently undergoing chemo after having liver surgery to remove a cancerous tumour so therefore I'm in the so called venerable group of people.

By the way where did you hear that the Delta and the new variant are hugely more contagious as I have not heard that that has been proven the case?

As for Covid death rates being higher than that of flu, that is not necessarily the case, because the way we record Covid deaths is flawed. As if I had died from my cancer for instance within 28 days of my positive Covid test, my death would have been included in the Covid the death figures although that would not have been the case.

Furthermore a more accurate way of describing so called Covid deaths in many cases, would be that they died WITH Covid and not BECAUSE of it as a huge amount of so called Covid deaths are actually caused by underlying conditions.
