Fair play to Man Utd, looks like they'll be confirming Rangnick as their new interim manager. He basically built the Red Bull clubs up from the ground to what they are today (obviously helped by a considerable amount of money!) - stepping in as manager of RB Leipzig when needed but also being the director of football at all the Red Bull clubs - they're still going to use his philosophy at all their even though he's departed. He's also the father of the current breed of German managers that love to press (gegenpressing) - Klopp, Tuchel etc all owe a lot to Rangnick.

Although most Man Utd fans will call this an underwhelming appointment and many non Utd fans will laugh as they've never heard of him, but this is a coup - especially if they keep him on in some capacity (would be their perfect DoF at long last) after they hire a permanent manager.

In theory yes. But having watched the laziness of that performance, I can't see the likes of Martial putting in what is required to Gegenpress - especially for an interim.

I think that's the biggest potential downside in the plan - it's a smart hire on paper, however to get the best out of Rangnick you need to give him absolute full control - including ditching any players that don't fit his playstyle (bye bye Ronaldo). That's never really been much of a problem at any of his previous clubs but could easily become a problem at Utd with player power or if the board want a certain player (most likely for commercial reasons) but Rangnick doesn't. Apparently the deal includes Rangnick staying on for another 2 seasons after the interim time is up (most likely as a DoF i'd imagine) which would pave the way for Poch or Ten Haag in the summer

There's a lot of people out there who have touched the game and inspired many top class managers, but haven't quite got the appreciation they deserve (much like Bielsa before his move to Leeds!) and Rangnick is one of those - Marco Rose (Dortmund manager), Nagelsmann (Bayern manager), Tuchel, Roger Schmidt (PSV) all owe a lot to Rangnick and most wouldn't be where they are today without him!

Perhaps they're our new Man City (much closer to home)? Despite our poor record against them, before many previous encounters with Chelsea I felt we could get something (and all the home games and some away games with them in the Prem have been close at least) but not in this one. They could be the best Chelsea side ever, as they have both the strong attack and mean defense of respectively the Ancelotti and Mourinho I title-winning sides.

Some fantastic insights from Adam Levanthal on FTRE this week: 5 days after Sarr's injury, Adam has no idea how serious it is but......Claudio Ranieri does and will tell us on Friday! Adam strongly recommends Watford fans pay a subscription to read his ITK articles online including an exclusive reveal on which of our players are African. Sign up quick before the Athletic goes bankrupt. Also in his most recent piece of WFC PR spin he looks into our latest bit of financial sophistry and concludes that mortgaging our stadium (yes the place where we play our matches) is totally fine and there's nothing to worry about at all. Especially when people with the financial probity of Scot and Gino are involved eh Adam? We are so lucky to have such a fearless, truth seeking, investigative journalist in our midst.
Maybe this is a more realistic view:

As much as I despise Arsenal, I want them to give Newcastle a good pumping today to make sure they stay away from us.

Sounds like a Steve Bruce type performance - sit back, soak up pressure.

    Edit: 1-0 Arsenal.

This is quite a boring match to be fair. Talk about parking the bus. Arsenal deserve to lead but it must be the "Howe effect".

Just as I say that... what a goal.

Also great to see Wilson straight back to his old tricks under Eddie - ridiculous attempt to 'earn' a penalty there that essentially constitutes a dive, and should be carded. Hilarious to watch a disciple of the Troy Deeney 'Big strong boy' rhetorical school go down under a piffling shoulder-to-shoulder like that.

    Question.

If Newcastle are still rock bottom come January, would that make a difference to who they could attract when they get to spend their blood money?

I can see Arsenal turning into Everton. Telling themselves that they're a massive club and signing absolute tat for big money while they hover around the Europa Conference National League position or whatever it is. Then soon enough the money will start to dry up as the Americans see it's a failing product and they end up fighting to finish top half.

I hope SEH gets a lower PPG record between now and January than Steve Bruce did. Would serve those geordie thicko fans right.

If they are well adrift of safety then I think it will.

They will still be able to attract mercenaries with the big wages but are they the type of characters you want in a relegation battle?

I really do hope they go down.

Yep, you’d think so. I’m sure there will be some players who are willing to take the money regardless, but are those the sort you want in a relegation battle?

The big game for Newcastle is Norwich - must win that.

Mind you most of their fans didn't seem to mind drawing at home to Brentford as it was "exciting and we scored some goals"

Well yes but you do need to defend too guys.

I was going to say the same, there will be plenty of players who will go if they double their salary, but they’re unlikely to be the ones they need.

QPR hold the record from 2012/13 for the longest winless start to a PL campaign - 16 games before finally winning on 15 December.

Was wondering if Newcastle could beat that, but sadly they have Norwich and Burnley at home in their next two games.

They're going to have to pay massive inflated fees and the contracts are going to be obscene to get anyone to come.

If they go down, they're going to make huge losses on their transfers.

As well as having to pay players way over the odds, those same players are going to have to not mind being relegated and playing at least a season in the championship. Who fits that profile?

They’ll never be able to sell anyone they sign in January if they get relegated because of the silly contracts they’ll be on, unless they pay them off which will cost a fortune.

Agreed. I'd expect a firesale in the summer so effectively they'll have forked out millions for 5 month rental players.

I think if the situation continues to be as dire as it is for them by January, they'll turn their attention to throwing cash at players who are far too good for the Championship but not really Premier League concerns - they don't have to worry about where that money's coming from, and anecdotally from the interviews I've read with Newcastle fans a season historically destroying the Championship before returning with promises of unlimited cash isn't that dreadful a prospect - they don't even have to worry about what those players will do/want when they come back up, because they can easily just replace them all as soon as promotion is secured.

That all being said, if they can attract just one or two relative mercenaries in January with enough talent then they'll still have a chance to stay up - the differences are fairly minimal at this/our level of the league.

Not quite. Sheffield United took just 2 points from their first 17 matches last season. Their first win came on January 12th against (of course) Newcastle.
