Just over a quarter of the season gone and Newcastle haven't won a game and sit on 6pts rock bottom. Two wins and they are (other results pending) out of the bottom three. I cannot remember the PL being this congested points wise coming up on Xmas. We are one win away (again, in theory) from the top ten. It's crazy, but at least it's more fun.

It’s only a reflection of the negative press that surrounds us and how we’re reported.

I think it’s a good thing and something we can use to our advantage. Being written off and rubbish will catch teams out as United and Everton can testify to.

To be fair, I think we are going up in estimations - a few weeks ago we had ‘no business being in the PL’ - then we beat Everton, so before the United game we improved our status to ‘lowly Watford’…a few more points and they will all find us largely irrelevant I imagine.

Plus let’s face it, if we can slowly pull away from the bottom, Ranieri will get even more cheery in the media and I actually think many of them will start to like us.

A couple of bad weekends though and Newcastle will be looking dangerously adrift - sure money talks, but will they really be able to convince enough mercenaries to come and actually perform a minor miracle to make up what could be a 10+ deficit if they aren’t careful?

I’m not as convinced as others are that they will get the right players in to simply pull away from the drop zone. Eddie Howe is hardly a manager that top players will walk over hot coals to play for either.

The fact we are scoring goals when playing well is why I think we will stay up... Its given that you play some decent teams and will lose some, but if you play well and can't hit the net, you are up **** creek because the opportunity for points is that rare.

Sarr, King and Dennis are doing well but Ranieri set us up to get at Man Utd, Which is refreshing and means we're more likely to score goals. Compared to QSF, Munoz, Ivic, Mazzari who would have sat back and played for a 1-0 defeat.

I’m not sure that’s fair on either the first or last of those given QSF’s result v Liverpool and the fact that we won 3-1 v United under Walter.

I think the differential is overstated now for sure. 4/1 looks a fair price compared to ours.

I agree, in 19/20 our defence were no worse than two of our previous 5 in the PL (and skewed by the Man City result) but wew scored fewer PL goals since 06/07.

This season we mustn't be fooled by the number of goals scored so far as the distribution of goals has been very peculiar.

Of our 12 matches we have failed to score in 7 of them, that is worrying and mustn't be overlooked. It is indeed encouraging that in 4 matches we have scored 3 or more goals however.

We’re very good at counter attacking when the opposition are chasing the game, unfortunately our defence has had so many errors in it, that if we concede first we don’t get that luxury and we invariably lose.

Hopefully if we can cut out the unforced errors and start getting the odd clean sheet then things should even themselves out a bit, maybe not so many goals in some games but enough to score more frequently.

We haven’t kept a clean sheet yet, and it stands to reason that if you concede at least a goal a game, probably at least 50% of the time the minimum of one goal you do concede will be the first goal of the game, and we’ll then subsequently struggle to score at all.

I don’t think it can be distilled to scored/conceded. The year we went down there was such little confidence in our defence that QSF was parking the bus at home to Sheff Utd and Bournemouth. Add to that some of the defence could not pass from A to B under minimal pressure. Both of those will nullify out attacking threat even with Delefeou and Sarr playing.

So if that trend continues, we play well enough in 33% of our games to win, normally convincingly, and so get 38 points and then scrape 3 or 4 draws when we aren't absolutely rubbish, ending up with 41 or 42....job done.
Better than being doggedly competitive in most matches with insufficient attacking threat to nick enough 1 goal wins.

Brentford are gash. Their helmet of a manager said they were the better team at the weekend despite Newcastle having more of the ball, creating more chances and having double the amount of shots. Can't wait for Dennis to humiliate them on live TV in a couple of weeks.

I really do hope we batter Brentford, can't stand their manager and fans. Hopefully they'll plummet down the divisions after this season and we'll never have to play them in a league game ever again. I see the Brentford love-in by the media and even some of our fans has now finished, thankfully.

    Can’t stand the manager .

Arrogant; myopic in his game analysis and closely resembles an urban crack weasel who has accidentally got chewing gum stuck in his mouth from scrounging through the bins.

You know, I am reallly not looking forward to playing Chelsea. They just swept Juventus under the carpet and slung the pieces in the bin. Stunning performance.

I'm not either, and I'm sure it makes little to no difference to our chances, but in total fairness we should note that this is not the Juventus of the past decade - they already appear to be well out of the title race in Serie A, with disquiet over both Allegri and some of the players - they're currently only one point further from the relegation zone than they are from top spot.

Chelsea have quite the busy schedule with 4 games in 11 days, hopefully they'll have to rotate a bit for us with West Ham and their last CL game coming after.

No strikers and they still churn out easy wins against good teams. Lukaku and Werner now returning to the fold and I'm sure forgotten man Saul Niguez will adapt into the side as well.

As good as City and Liverpool are, I can't see how Chelsea will be stopped.

Once they'd got them under the carpet, how did they get them in the bin? Did they just sweep them back out again?
Mind you, I agree with you - they are a good side. Talented players who play with great speed and energy. Nothing like Man U.

It’ll take some rotation to get down to their U-11’s as all their teams above that level would smash us.
