My dad was originally from Manchester and was an armchair United fan. Moved “down south” when he went to Uni and never went back. When he settled in Amersham with my mum, he started going to watch Watford with my grandad because he wanted to support a local league side and he ended up switching his allegiance to Watford. So does that make him a reverse glory hunter?

Yes. Turned his coat once. Could do so again.

I thought about turning my coat once, but it didn't work. Not really with the idea of abandoning Watford, but with the idea of having a 'second team' as some claim they have.

It was when I was living in Chatham in Kent for a while and I thought I would start watching Gillingham. Just wanted to watch a bit of football really. It was reverse-glory hunting because I'm sure they were lower in the leagues than us at the time. Certainly they weren't in the same league. The idea of supporting any other team against us is unthinkable.

Went once or twice. Couldn't get up any enthusiasm. It reminded me of when I crept into a game in Ireland once through an opened gate and watched the last 20 minutes. Still have no idea who the teams were or what the final score was. Same with Gillingham. Couldn't keep up my interest. Couldn't really care if they won or lost. Sometimes started wanting Chesterfield or whoever the opponents were, to win, if they were a good team. Certainly couldn't be bothered with getting cold or wet watching them. Stopped going pretty quickly...

Good point - he’s only supported Watford for 50 years now so all to prove..

To be fair, the company I worked for have a factory in Manc. The split (office & shop floor) was about 60/40 in favour of United. And they were genuine, local, working class Mancs. And they despised the impact of the 'global fanbase' on the club, many holding its 'commercial potential' as being directly responsible for the Glazers' decision to buy them. But they won't stop supporting because most are from 3rd generation United families...

I have never met such people and I don't believe they exist.

If you support Watford and weren't born in Watford General, you're little more than a carpetbagger.

I was born in the Rookery in the middle of a pre season friendly against Shrewsbury because my Mum refused to go to hospital when a big game was on. Does that mean Im not a fan ?

That’s a blow for all us born before 1965 (pre Watford General). It was the Peace Memorial or Shrodells, and the Maternity hospital then. And anyway myself and three siblings were all born at home. In the sixties that was not rare.

Of course it does. You weren't born there because you wanted to be there, you were born there because your mum wanted to be there. Now if your mum had wanted to get next door to the hospital but you forced your way out to prevent her, then you'd be a fan.
