Growing up in Surrey in the 80s/90s the glory hunters who tried to hide it a bit more all supported Spurs, it’s amazing how many of them had dads or granddads apparently born in North London.

My dad moved to England in the 1950s. His first love are Apoel Nicosia, but he came to Rickmansworth as a young man and immediately started following the Blues. Despite having watched 60 years of games, including reserves, youth team, home and away, and being friends with Walley, Harrison, Jacket and Roeder, I'm not sure I'd consider him a true fan. Bit of a plastic if I'm honest.

When I was a toddler, he took me and my brothers to games, setting us on a low wall in the Vic Rd End so we could see the game, scene though we weren't interested.

I was born at Watford General. My kids were born at Watford General. I grew up in croxley.

There was never any moment where it might have been considered that I would support anyone else and the notion of 'choosing' a team is anathema to me.

Watford just IS my team. It was destiny and there was no other way around it.

    That's how it should be.

I'm somewhat alarmed at the swathes of plastic Hornets we have on here. If you weren't born in a WD postcode or can get an appeal past the panel of genuine connections arbitration, then please support someone else. It undermines everything we are about if people from Bristol or Carlisle start revealing 50 years of Watford fandom. It's not right.

I suspect AH63's post about QPR was in jest, already knowing who they'd beaten.

Yes, the northern end of Loftus Rd starts in the Croxley suburbs. I'm sorry m8 but your whole life has been a living a lie.
ps Greece is a bloody fantastic country. Seriously thinking of going to live there when we retire. Great people, great food, great scenery, great birds/wildlife.

Nonsense. Next you'll be claiming Sth Croxley isn't in Shepherds Bush.

Yeah by bad. Cyprus isn't too shabby either, though I left a camera in the Troodos Mountains last time I was there after using self-timer. Was 2 hrs away before I realised.

Of course that's not a valid reason. The grandad would have had to have been an actual supporter of Man U and then also passed it on to the father/mother.
I've always considered there are only three valid reasons for supporting a football club:
    1. A team from the area you hail from.
    2. A team from the area you live in. (A caveat for this one is if you get deeply attached to your first team and then move you cannot genuinely change allegiance, even if you regularly watch your 'new' team.)
    3. A team you inherit an allegiance for from your parent(s).

Having said that I must accept that, with the extremely wide coverage of football now, there will be 'armchair fans' who choose a team to follow because of their style, shirt colour or even success. What is still unacceptable, however, is changing that team because they are no longer as good. Even worse is following a team because of a certain player - the I love CR7 syndrome.

1, 2 & 3 apply to me, but my dad grew up in Plymouth and therefore 1, 2 & 3 applied to him for Argyle. He moved to Bushey in his mid-20s and at first only went to Vicarage Road when Plymouth played, at the time GT first joined Watford in 1977 he started going to Watford regularly and having lived in the area for 51 years there is no-one else. In 1984 he was with me in the winning end of Villa Park, his brothers and cousins were at the other end.

Most of my friends/colleagues who support Man Utd are all fairly decent, grounded individuals so I haven't rubbed their noses in it too much. It's the entitled Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham supporters I loathe. Most of them have a little dig and all of them are not from London or Liverpool.

I've never had issues with some fans of the bigger clubs, look at Arsenal Fan TV for example, these are people who genuinely follow their team and like to have a moan about directly outside the ground. Whereas the Youtube clip on page 1 of the thread, what a ******* shouting and screaming about "what's happening to his club", it's not even real anger or passion, it's sad for want of a better word.

Great story! There's nothing wrong with your dad going to watch Watford and wanting them to do well but, to me, deep in his heart he would always be a Plymouth fan.

I was born 1.3 miles from the Vic. My son was born 10,558 miles away from the ground in Sydney Australia.

He is just as passionate about the mighty orns as I am, if not more so.

I don't think where you were born is particularly relevant tbh.

I studied with, and am friends with, loads of 'em. There was always a camaraderie amongst us about supporting 'our' sh*t local team (don't forget when they were in the 3rd Div they were regularly getting 30k attendances) - their disdain for the money grabbing ways of "The Rags" or
    "The Munichs"
as they described them was far greater than my own towards the scummers. When we meet up we discuss every- and anything except football now.

One of the main reasons that I despise the geordies is that my best mate (A. Geordie who's the same age as me) has frequently told me that that at school (mid 70's to 80's) .in North and South Shields he was one of the very few Mags - virtually all his schoolmates supported Sunderland.

Only 10558 miles? My niece lives in Christchurch NZ, 11780 miles from the Vic, she's only been to one match though and that was the 3-2 win over Cardiff 3 years ago.

No, he has no interest in Plymouth anymore.

No, but presumably he got his interest from you? Which is the point, that’s totally fine.

If he decided to support Utd (or any other big successful team) instead that’s where there would be a problem.

Born in Wales, family left for Cyprus when I was a 2yo and returned at age 6 to settle in Uxbridge. Started to love football despite not being in a football loving family, so picked Leeds because they shone really brightly in their white kit on our crappy black and white telly. No idea if they were local or 300 miles away, it wasn't even a consideration at that age. Had the chance by accident to see Watford age 13 and the experience of a live game hooked me immediately and I've been supporting the Horns for 44 years since. I had no lingering feeling for Leeds at all, such was the feeling of actually going and supporting a team - that first-hand connection makes a lasting bond I think, so I like hearing stories about how people found Watford who aren't from WD... we've had to go out of our way to be miserable :)

Also born in Wales. Family moved to Watford. Father had no interest in football so I picked Liverpool due to Ian Rush (as the first question in the new playground ws 'who do you support?'). Next door neighbours took me to see Watford play, fan ever since. This was during the 83-84 season, maybe mild glory hunting :)

Was 14 when I went to my first game and was hooked immediately. Was stunned at the noise and atmosphere that 6k fans could make. Before that I barely even glanced at WFC results.

There's half a possibility that I could have turned out a plastic Chelski fan (shudder).

It was that cup final in 1971 (?) against dirty Leeds that went to a replay. Leeds were so, so dirty that you couldn't help but feel sorry for the more skilful but slighter Chelsea players as they were kicked up in the air by Bremner and Co.

I have to confess that I even went as far as the purchase of a 45 record of 'blue is the colour' as one of my very first pocket money Woolworths singles.

Yes compadres, I was an innocent who was unknowingly being tempted down a dark and horrible path.

Fortunately salvation came in the form of my younger brother, who sat on the stinking single after I left it on my bed, snapping the despicable dirty disc, that vile piece of vinyl, clean in half.

Of course I was angry at the time, but not long after got taken to a Watford game and never looked back from the true path of light and righteousness.

I remember the smell of the burger van, the cigarette smoke, that foggy mist that seemed to descend in the late stages of a winter game, the feel of a new scarf, and yes, the noise.

Sorry, got all "jumpers for goalposts" for a moment... don't mind me...
