Not really . I know plenty who are ST holders or spend vast amounts of money
    following them around the country/Europe
Are you saying that any Watford fan who doesn't live in the WD postcode is a "plastic" ?

  2. Keighley

Yeah, I’m with you on this. Why do “proper” supporters have to live locally?

  3. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

If they’re not originally from Manchester they’re glory hunting plastics and I’d give them the exact same treatment as Moog.

  4. Keighley

    Keighley First Team

I’m not from Watford. I’ve supported the club for 42 years.

You're also very clearly not hunting any glory.

  6. Keighley

    Keighley First Team

    Well, yes, that is true.

  7. Davy Crockett

Absolutely. Because their is a mahoosive difference between a genuine supporter who spends
his money and time on following his or her team than those irritating ***** who just want to
    gloat .
Look at it this way , I am "away group a" but never got a sniff of a Brentford ticket.
Imagine how hard it must be to get a Man Utd away ticket as a Man Utd fan

  8. a19tgg

It’s very simple, why would anyone who lives hundreds of miles from Manchester have started supporting Manchester Utd in the first place? It will 99.9% of the time be because they happened to the the most successful team when it came to picking who to support. I have no time for these type of people.

My heart bleeds, they shouldn’t be glory hunters then, and pick their team on who happens to be the most successful at the time they picked them. It stands to reason that if you pick the most successful team to support then you’ll have a hard time getting tickets.

  10. Keighley

    Keighley First Team

Well, I chose the ‘Orns, having been a dirty Leeds supporter in the early 70s, because they were rising up the divisions under GT. A mild form of glory-hunting, I guess.

Admittedly, I do have familial connections.

I don’t really see why “proper” allegiance has to be linked to locality. Perhaps in the 1930s. Not now.

Not true . The Munich air disaster is the reason why Man Utd became a national wide supported club .
Please don't carry on because I am a " anyone but utd" type of person and I hate having to defend their real fans

So your Man Utd friends are at least in the seventies then? Fair enough.

No chance it was just because Utd were the most successful team when it came to picking then?

    Your words not mine

    Which part don't you understand?

I’m not from Watford either, I’ve never lived there. Watford was handed down to me from my Mum’s side of my family, my Uncle used to take me and my brothers to Watford games as he didn’t have any sons.

My criteria was never that you had to be from the area to be classed as a valid supporter of a club, more that for any Utd fan who isn’t from Manchester and lives a few hundred miles away, we all know full well why they support them, glory hunting, plain and simple.

You literally said you’ve got friends who are proper Man Utd fans?

I was just curious about their age as the Munich air disaster was in the 1950s.

  16. Keighley

    Keighley First Team

Mmm. I know plenty of United fans who started supporting them in the 70s. They weren’t all that great then. But they were “famous”, I guess. Does that count as glory-hunting?

I don't think it does, but there needs to be some kind of connection outside of "they're successful" or that person really is everything Moog accuses them of. Example: family was originally from the area and successive generations have inherited the mantle.

If anyone wants to tell me it's just a coincidence that one of the world's biggest clubs has the biggest global fanbases, I'll be in danger of laughing myself to death.

The true Man Utd fans are those who'd continue to turn up and/or follow the team if they got relegated to the e.g. 4th/5th tier. I think we all know the vast majority of their fan base wouldn't do this.

I mean, that's a fair amount of top level success I reckon. But then, I'm a Watford fan so my expectations are naturally lessened. :D

I walked into my local in The Midlands after the game lastnight wearing a Watford scarf and there were a group of Man United fans sitting on the table near the bar who instantly looked at me and one of them just looked straight at me and said why?

I simply aksed them if they had been to the game. I knew they wouldn't have and of course they hadn't. I then asked them why they supported Man United when they are from The West Midlands and there are loads of more local teams to support.

I don't think people have to support the place they are from but looking down on real football fans for supporting their local club becaue they have chosen to follow a club from a place they have no affiliation to because they are succesful is baffling.

Out with 10 mates last night for our Xmas do (I know....way too early). Out of the 11 of us only 5 support Premier League teams. Me, a Brighton fan, a Palace fan & 2 Chelsea fans (valid reasons).

It's still weird to me as a Watford fan since the 70s to be one of the "big boys" now. But when you are sitting at a table with a Grimsby fan then that is what we are!

I could never imagine "picking" a top team as "my team" and ever getting the same joy that we get from weekends like this. I almost feel sorry for the plastic fans tbh.

Of course their fanbase will have dropped considerably over the past few years, in direct correlation with their relative lack of success.

The drop in the United numbers will be balanced out by the growth in City and Liverpool 'passionate fans'.

How often did you ever run into a Man City fan in the 80s or 90s for example? I don't think I ever knew a single one. Can't move for 'em now though. Hoardes of the fackers.

I rarely find one that will confess to supporting one of these big clubs purely on the grounds of their success. In my experience they're usually keen to establish their authenticity, without you even having questioned it. It's one of the first things they want to tell you. Oh no, they're no glory hunter! No, no, no. They've loved [insert name of currently most successful of big 6 clubs] ever since the age of 2, long before they were ever successful. Of course there are some fair weather fans, but not them. Oh no, they've loved [name] ever since the days of [name of famous ex-player] when they saw him on telly in the final and just, inexplicably fell in love! Oh yes, they've always been a loyal fan 100%, it's just that they never used to say much about it until very recently...

Another good example is Newcastle and the legions of fake 'wor geordies lad' who sprung up around the time of Keegan with their fake fishees on their little dishees and assurances that their uncle dave lived up near Newcastle a while back, so they're local really. Completely disappeared now. Just don't see 'em.

One of my mates from Manchester prided himself on being a Citeh fan and he finds it uncomfortable that they are now the team most of the glory hunters follow.

I've never lived in Watford and Charlton would be my local team now but I was introduced by my dad, who was introduced by our neighbours in 1991 so very much not glory hunters imo.

Over the past 30 years though we have probably had more glory than most of (all of?) the 3 counties clubs...so perhaps relatively speaking we were. Eek

I've got a bit of a soft spot for Charlton. My uncle used to take me to games when I was young and I do remember that being my first ever live game. I never fully supported them though, Watford have been and will always be my passion. However, I do follow Charlton's games on the side and hope they do well. When we smashed them 5-0 (was it 5?) at the Vic under Joka it was bitter sweet. They also had a prolonged stay in the PL under Curbishley (when he was good), and from what I am aware of, they are still followed very closely and have (again, like us) a sort of "family" feel to the club.

I would place Plastic Manc fans slightly above fans of smaller clubs who spend most of their free time on forums moaning about how sh1t their club is and then giving it the big one when they occasionally beat a top team .

Actually, it's ALWAYS because 'my grandad lived in Manchester and I took my team from that' or 'I actually started supporting the reds in 1995, when Blackburn won the Premier League, so I earned my stripes.'

I mean, these are the things I hear behind me as I walk away from these people.

No such thing as a 'real' utd fan. Disposable income and time to travel doesn't change that.

Also had a season in Division 2.

Liverpool were streets ahead of everyone throughout the 70s. Leeds, Arsenal, Derby and (probably) Chelsea all stronger than United in the first half of the decade; Forest and Ipswich in the second.

As an impressionable young boy in the early 70s (jumpers for goalposts and all that!) I was a Liverpool fan based on their success at that time - and they weren't Leeds. My school friends were Liverpool/Man U/Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs fans and I even remember getting a Kevin Keegan annual for Christmas!

Despite living in Watford, my dad wasn't a fan (he was born up north) and the club were totally off the radar - 3rd/4th Division team going nowhere. It was only when I went to a couple of Watford matches as a preteen with my friends that I became a fan, even if the first was a match that got us relegated to Div.4! I'm pretty sure that had I not gone to those games I'd be a confirmed 'plastic' Liverpool fan now. So I can understand why kids develop loyalties to the teams at an early age they'll keep for life, but I don't really get why grown adults choose a big club unless there isn't a local team to support - and what constitutes 'local' is another debate...
