So a single shot is definitely not sufficient to stop the youngsters getting it. On the very day my 17 yr old received her text saying she was now eligible for her second shot, she also returned a positive lateral flow test. She had, at that point, the symptoms of a cold and I only tested her as a precaution - never expected it to be positive. Two subsequent lateral flows she did (one the same evening and one the following morning) were both negative - but her PCR results have just come through and they’re positive. It will be interesting to see if I manage to avoid getting it again, as I spent Monday afternoon sitting alongside her in the car while she spluttered away from her “cold”.

It does appear that having the vaccine makes it much less likely that an individual will pass on the virus and much less likely a well vaccinated individual will get it.

I’d imagine being in such close proximity balances that, but it’s no forlorn hope it’ll pass you by. Fingers crossed.

Herts beware. Some big hotspots in the County.

It was enough to make the viral levels low enough to not show up on a latera flow and so therefore probably less likely to spread it. Perfection is the enemy of good

Good point - and hopefully you’re right about the viral levels because, even though her symptoms have become more “covid-like” (she now has the dry cough), she tested negative again on lateral flow yesterday. And I’m still symptom free.

Ending free testing is a bigger key to returning to normality I’d say. Apparently that’s on the agenda too.

Over 40s to be offered a Covid booster

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59289008

Personally pleased about that, with reports of waning protection from the double dose, I had mine in April & June I'd like to think that an extra boost to see me through the winter would be most welcome. I suspect from here on we would be offered a vaccination every autumn.

Austria starts lockdown for the unvaccinated. Harsh and some.

Clearly it had to act on its rising cases, but this is way beyond anywhere else.

Queuing around the block for vaccines apparently.

Articles like that make my blood boil. If it was as simple as mandatory (correct) mask wearing then why isn’t the whole world doing it? I bracketed correct because the vast majority of everyday people you see wearing masks either wear an irrelevant mask or wear it incorrectly.
It then states that social distancing is less effective which is utter tosh. I had it sweetly explained by a professor at the UEA and it’s all to do with the virus(if you’ve got it) being diluted. He said ‘if you are stood in the sea and you are 2 metres away and they are peeing you would have no idea because of the dilution’, same with Covid.
It’s a great shame that we aren’t given the stats on people dying with co morbities v healthy people, impact of age etc, comparisons with other viruses, suicide, late diagnosed cancer etc etc.
On a personal note my wife is visiting a colleague in Manchester this weekend who started a persistent cough in February this year. She was repeatedly told by her GP to get a Covid test. Eventually actually saw a doctor 8 weeks ago and it turns out she has terminal lung cancer. She’s 50 with 2 young children.
As for Austria making the vaccine mandatory, where do you begin? I’m tripled jabbed, flu jabbed and think people who don’t have the vaccine are bonkers. As are people who are obese, smoke, ride motorbikes and jump off bridges with a rubber band round their ankles....but it’s their choice. If someone doesn’t want the vaccine, so be it. One wonders if these people read history and it’s particularly ironic that it’s Austria(it looks like Germany will follow) that are the first country to mandate a medical treatment

That is sad to hear - probably a few tales like that unfortunately.

    :(

I don’t know if most people hospitalised are those unvaccinated or younger in which case the priority must be to get that rolled out more than anything else .

Those things aren’t communicable to others:

Vaccines also help to relieve pressure on health systems.

Sorry to hear about your wife’s friend. Sadly all too common with or without Covid.

Otherwise, posts like yours make my blood boil too. This has been a simple pandemic to manage.

What has been difficult is non-compliance, moaning and disinformation. Of course masks are helpful. The countries most successful in combating the pandemic have utilised them from the off. It’s a shame so many people cannot simply accept this, prefer feeble individualism.

And it doesn’t say social distancing is ineffective. It says it’s effective, which of course it is, because the virus doesn’t have legs.

Sure, we have creeping authoritarianism now. Why? Because of non-compliance, bellyaching about the economy, unwillingness to follow measures, distrust of scientists. It’s a hell of one part of the population’s making, the usual rationality defying populist loudmouths who make it an issue of personal freedom first over public health a poor second.

Don’t shoot the messenger is my message.

Ok, sure, I mean it should have been. It’s just a virus. Slow down mixing and movement until you get a vaccine in record time. We could have got very different results.

But no, we need to bellyache every move, every moderate bit of advice. It’s been a festival of denial that has shown up the World’s fragilities and vanities.

It was never easy to manage given that it can be spread by people showing no symptoms.

Just had my 3rd Jab a few days ago and just had a slightly sore arm but I'm now fine. If any of you guys have not had the jab yet you should go for it for the greater good.

    You know it makes sense!!!

To a degree, but I think the idea that we could have kept Delta out of the U.K. forever is pretty fanciful.

Plus delta entered and became the dominant strain in this country well before this ‘current phase’.

Who is saying that we could?

But it’s unarguable that we could not have controlled it better.

The point I’m making is not limited to the UK. The relentless attacks on lockdowns, mask wearing, social distancing and vaccines have had a real impact, here and on the continent. People are getting very sick wholly unnecessarily

Many of those in their 50s and 60s currently being ventilated (Mrs Moose knows one) probably can’t explain why they haven’t been vaccinated. A friend of mine can’t/won’t. People absorb the fear and mistrust generated by 18 months of hard work by sceptics to undermine confidence in science and medicine. The reward will be increasingly dogmatic approaches by Governments.

Amazing to see those morons in Holland, Austria and Croatia and the like rioting. Our human rights have been violated. No they have not. You're simply being asked to do something for the common good. Something that would make sure there would have been no lockdown in the first place. But this me,me,me selfish anti-social attitude is more important. These people are also incredibly thick. No doubt about it. Who cares about science, peer reviewed papers and evidence. No let the fearmongers on social media without a brain cell between them lead the way with their ignorance and stupidity.

I've little time for these idiots. It's a shame and quite scary that they have the right to vote. Most are undoubtedly from the tinfoil hat brigade and the multiplicity of lunatic conspiracy theories they believe in. Be it mRNA toxicity lol or not landing on the Moon.

I don't believe that was Moose'se point, though. He said this wasn't a difficult pandemic to manage, which on the face of it is true. We (in this "we" being most nations) certainly knew what needed to be done to limit the spread by at least February last year, we just didn't want to do it.

Not wanting to take the necessary actions to manage the pandemic effectively doesn't make the required responses difficult, merely unpalatable (whether politically or otherwise).

I don't think it was ever possible to stop Covid leaving China, nor do I think it was possible to stop the new strains from escaping their points of origin. Covid just spreads too easily - by the time each one was detected and known about, it's impossible to believe they weren't already out of the country.

The Delta variant was being reported in India weeks before we stopped flights from there, it was appalling how long they let that continue and that's NOT with the value of hindsight, we all knew at the time it was wrong.

Had my booster this morning and much like the first jab, a room full of miserable unfit people looking like they'd rather be anywhere else. Must be the area!
