    The mythical Shakespeare.

    Helped ruin Villa

He was Ranieris number two when Leicester won the league.

We were cut a drift at the bottom of the table before Shakespeare arrived and had won one of our 16 previous games. Pearson and Shakespeare won 26 points from 20 games, which would place us in 13th place given the form of other teams during that period.

All well and good that they presided over an upturn in form. They also presided over the form that saw us relegated, including the most pathetic and limp of defeats at West Ham when a victory would have seen us practically safe. On the whole, Pearson and Shakespeare were a failure at our club.

I think I've seen it reported that we tried to keep Shakespeare after Pearson was sacked.

Well, some people may argue that the upturn in results and performances was down to coaching. On the whole, when you consider the points tally they were not a failure as I mentioned in a previous post-Pearson and Shakespeare would have been in 13th place if the season had started when they took over. Yes, we were beaten rather effortlessly by West Ham but I think there was something going on behind closed doors which ultimately led to Pearson losing his job. You could counter that argument though and say they also inspired plenty of other wins including Liverpool and Man United. The damage was already done before they arrived it was nothing short of a miracle that we were even in with a chance.

I was going to mention the exact same thing. Is he really that great or is this based on when Leicester won the league

We went down by a point.
So that means we only needed 8 points from the 9 games after the resumption from the covid break.
We only got 7 points from 9 games, not sure you can call that good or successful.

I think it’s one of those things you get with coaches, 99.9% of the time they make awful managers (like he was at Leicester) and it’s normally because they’re not man managers or disciplinarians. This means generally everyone in football including the players they’ve coached normally have nothing but good things to say about them, and that they’re a great coach. As a coach the buck always stops with the manager, so they very rarely get blamed for any failures along the way. They therefore generally get this reputation of being great at their job, but it’s actually very difficult to prove if its true, because they’ll never get the blame for things going wrong and you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who has a bad word to say about them.

Graham Jones according to many Geordies was behind anything good at Newcastle, but he has bombed in his time in charge and bombed as a manager, yet you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone in football that won’t say he’s an excellent coach.

We were also 9 points adrift at the bottom when he arrived though. So if you take into consideration the overall points tally which would have us lower mid-table then its reasonable to suggest Shakespeare wasn't ****. Despite relegation. I don't think it takes a genius to work out why some Watford fans would like Craig Shakespeare back at the club in a coaching role. He is a good coach and there is no way that his spell at Leicester or Watford was disastrous which is what was basically said in the comment that I replied to.

Could he come in alongside Ranieri, with Pearson and Xisco underneath them as a sort of dream team.

I'm sure Ranieri would love to have the man who knifed him in the back at Leicester as part of his coaching staff.

Apparently we approached Shakespeare after Pearson was sacked but he turned us down out of loyalty to his mate, was Much Ado About Nothing really. Great coach like everyone has stated.

Bacon or the Earl of Oxford would do a better job than Shakespeare, though Ranieri would probably prefer Dante.

Sounds like Norwich had no plan for a new manager then and got lucky since Smith was sacked after Farke left.

I think that's a very good appointment. Not to stay up - they are dreadful - but a good shot for promotion again.

I dunno... they kept Farke for an incredibly long time with a painfully bad PL record because they knew what he could do at Championship level and they were right.

  31. Burnsy

Then why sack him? Surely they are just getting the same with Smith by that token? I think they genuinely think they can stay up - and will sack Smith when it’s obvious they won’t. And he’s jumped into a new job far too quickly after being sacked by the club he supports - that leaves scar tissue. I think it’s a disastrous appointment on many levels - not that I think he’s actually a bad manager.

Agreed, it reeks of desperation from him, I'd have thought he could have got a better Premier League job than this if he'd waited
