Die Brucke directed by Bernhard Wicki. A small group of Hitler youth without orders encounter the real horror of war but remain to guard a bridge filled by idealism. At the end when the last two survivors are told it was all pointless the sheer futility of it all and life in this case very young life being thrown away is brought sharply into focus. One of the great anti-war films.

The Exorcist - what a phenomenal film, seen it many times and it does not disappoint.

  4. Just watched it. Great cast.

The books are an old favourite, and the 2 previous attempts to bring them to the big screen were awful. This misses parts of the book out but still is very well done and looking forward to part 2.

Something that stayed with me for a while was the German/Danish production "Land of Mine". A very small film that focuses on how the large numbers of German POWs caught in Denmark were used by the Danes for mine clearance after the German surrender.

EDIT: Just seen it's on iplayer.

Blimey, this makes me feel old. I remember watching it on TV when it was first broadcast.

Watched the new Tom Hanks film Finch last night.

It's quite charming and moving, I did enjoy it but felt they didn't know how to end the movie.

Thought the robot 'Jeff' sounded like a mechanical Borat.

    Overall though, it was enjoyable.

An undemanding yet curiously watchable Hanks 'vehicle'. A very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

I imagine it was pitched to backers with
"Imagine Tom Hanks in 'Castaway' on the set of 'Omega man' with the robot out of 'Short Circuit'"
    - this is no criticism of the final film.

I have to share this exceptionally funny/offensive post some-one added to a review site
Every time I see Tom Hanks in a movie, I remember Paul Mooney sketch in the Chappelle Show. "Well, I've written a film, maybe they'll produce my film. The Last N***a on Earth, starring Tom Hanks."

Totally agree with the 1st spoiler. I felt this is the kind of film Chappie should have been - which I didn't enjoy.

Conjuring 3 - the Devil Made Me Do It

Loved 1 and 2... this one was ok, a bit meh in places. Slow paced but a good finale. Vera Fragmira is a fantastic actress, she also played Norma Bates in "Bates Motel".

The Last Tree - shown on C4 the other night.

A good film generally, but lacking in much excitement and suffering from stereotypes.

African lad is fostered by a white lady out in the countryside and grows up nicely, but he is a bit moody and prone to long stares at the sun setting over the countryside and yelling for no reason. His mother then reclaims him and takes him to London.

The mother is very traditional African and beats him with a stick etc. This is a big hidden problem that doesn't get much publicity. First generation migrants tend to bring their customs with them and children who don't do what they're told or answer back get whacked as a rule in the developing world. Education and clear guidance that beating children with implements is not acceptable in the UK. I've even had to stop Cifriana from chasing our kids with a threatening flip flop (to give them a 'changletaso') once or twice.

Anyway. Grown up a bit more now and even more moody, he spends some time gazing silently at the grimy urban scene and then goes to school where the other black kids are all exclusively fam blood innit types (very stereotypical this bit). He then, like all black boys. gets mixed up with a gang run by one of those fat bald headed black men that has pleats of rolled fat on the back of his neck. He becomes fatty's 'bruv', 'fam' and 'blood' when he saves him from getting jumped by another black gang. Innit. Fatty is a pretty good actor actually. Quite menacing. Whilst doing gang stuff, he gets in even more trouble with the mother and at school. He tells his mother after one beating that he hates her.

Our hero goes back to visit the white Foster lady in the country and she now has another little black kid she is fostrring. It is unclear the significance of this. Ciff thought he was jealous, but he got on OK with the new kid and they played together and hugged. He sat moodily with the white lady and asked her why she did it. She said she did it because she was "proud of all her boys". However the answer comes back "yeah, but we're not though, are we" and they both lapse into another moody silence and distance stare.

It must have had some effect because when he goes back, he decides to leave the gang, gets beaten up by fatty neck roll as a result. Tells his mother he loves her, goes to Africa with her (looked like Lagos to me) and has a good time. Visits his father, who is some millionaire TV pastor type. Doesn't like him and gets all moody. Is briefly introduced to a couple of half siblings (significance unclear). Does a bit of traditional Santeria voodoo stuff - amazing how the African and Cuban ceremonies are almost identical after all those centuries.

Final scene is on the beach in Lagos where he stares out moodily over the crashing waves and does a big yell for no reason.

Watched Red Notice last night...I wanted to like it...but ugh...the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds was almost there...it was lacking something and felt forced. Gal Gadot...pretty to look at but she can't act.

Not going to put any spoilers, but they speed through location after location to mask flaws in the narrative, so it's very much a case of... 'wait, wait hold on a second, how did...oh we've changed to a new location. But back in Spain...oh we're now in Italy...no time to think, we're now in South America."

I just found the film annoying, forced and generally uninteresting and predictable.

We watched 2007's There Will Be Blood on Netflix last night. It's terrific and both Daniel Day Lewis and the chap who plays the priest (don't know who he is) are outstanding. Thoroughly recommended

My favourite film. Fantastic score by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead too. The opening twenty minutes with no dialogue, just him scrutting around down a mineshaft and then deciding to dig for oil instead is genius.

Paul Dano plays the priest, really good actor. Last thing I saw him in was a prison drama series called Escape at Dannemora which is great.

My ideal double bill of film is this and No Country for Old Men. Two perfect films set in the American west, made in the same year I think too.

It completely passed me by when it was first released and I confess I'd never even heard of it until a friend recommended it recently. It really is good - not sure it would make my top two though, but it wouldn't be far away

Ok this isnt a film in this format, but I went to see the Back to the Future theatre production in London at the weekend, and it was amazing. Can really recommend it for anyone that loved the film.

Story is tweaked a little to fit the fact that its a show, but the effects are great with the car and the actors nail some of the mannerisms of the original film actors

One of the best documentaries films I've seen in a while. It centres on one of the least appealing musicians I can ever imagine who actually turns out to be very down-to-earth and self-aware when discussing his music and the vast number of critics of his output. You will not be disappointed. The blurb from metacritic says it all:

Saw Last Night in Soho at the actual cinema. Very well directed by Edgar (Sean of the Dead) Wright, entertaining, great use of music and a top drawer cast too.

It is a bit hokey, but then it’s a horror. The first 20 minutes is so good a horror is almost the least interesting thing you could do with it, but a good watch nevertheless.

With a couple of hours to kill last night I put on "Encounter" - expecting it to be a , low-budget, standard formulaic alien invasion piece of chewing gum for the brain. What I actually 'got' was quite an unsettling piece of story telling with the very credible Riz Ahmed giving a excellent performance (along with the child actors Lucian-River Chauhan, and Aditya Geddada). I was going to provide a link to the movie's wiki page but it seems between 21h00 last night and now some MF'er has written a sumarry of the plot - THIS FILM IS BEST VIEWED KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT IT BEFOREHAND.

    Highly, highly recommended.

Probably best not knowing that it's best viewed knowing nothing about it beforehand!

Like saying sixth sense is great but big plot twist at the end that you're best not knowing.

With not one, but two Mrs Brown's Boys specials on over Christmas, I hope the licence fee is scrapped once and for all. No amount of dramas and wildlife documentaries can offset that pil of sh_t being served up twice.

OK so watched half of this last night on Prime, (whilst being ultra careful not to learn of the plot in any way), to the point where I just saw the duct tape and garage scene.

I won't be able to watch the last hour tonight, but hopefully on Wednesday I will be able to find out the meaning of the title.

    So far a good recommendation.

"Dave made a maze" on Amazon.

All about a man who builds his own cardboard box fort and he and his friends get trapped in it. Its not got hollywood production values, but it is imaginative and very cleverly done and we really enjoyed its silly humour.
