I saw it last night, like you without having seen the previous version nor read the book. I was mightily impressed after a slow start when I did think 'I hope it improves or I'm off'. The ending sets up part two nicely, however I did read there was some doubt whether it's going to be made!

btw. I saw it at Aylesbury Odeon which has been totally refurbished, with wide, reclining and very comfortable seats with enough legroom to stretch my 6' 5" frame without touching the wall in front of the next row of seats. No big price increase either - it actually makes for a good cinema experience - although they don't do ice creams any more.

So many fond memories of that as a kid. Is it still on the original site, or did it move? Not been back to Aylesbury in approaching 20 years now.

Over the road from Friars (now The Waterside, next to the end of the canal )? I lived in Watford so didn't go to Aylesbury for 'the pictures'!

Good news, Dune part 2 has been officially greenlit...have to wait until 2023 though.

Stop what you're doing and watch Falling For Figaro.

You can all thank me later.

Not sure if this counts, but I quite like the look of the new Batman film from the official trailer. Oh, and I did watch a film called "Sightless" which was excellent despite being low budget.

Halloween Kills...utterly ridiculous film and an insult to even the lowest intelligence.

I'm fed up with Hollywood slasher films writing stupid characters who act stupidly and it comes as no surprise when they're killed...in fact I was happy when they were killed...they were too stupid to live.

Michael Myers is now immortal - that's how stupid it is.

The format for every slasher film for the last 50 years or more: Knowing there is a killer on the loose, characters hear a noise in the dark and go to investigate (no-one would ever do that!) so they get slashed, deservedly. At the end, the slasher is killed, but not properly so inexplicably gets up again ready for the next film in the franchise. I've not seen Halloween Kills but I bet that's the highly original plot?

You missed the bit where one or both of a sexy, confident couple get killed while they’re having it off.

This is why I dislike horror films, they’re so formulaic and you know what is going to happen. It’s made even more tedious by the use of sound to generate a few fake ‘scares’ before an actual one. Woman opens a cupboard and something falls out, cue massive bang, repeat a few more times before something scary actually happens.I can’t fathom the enjoyment in watching something so obviously signposted that it’s insulting.

Watch Ghostbusters 2016 if you want to see a true horror film.

I'd aways recommend Korean horror films.

Train to Busan is much much more than just a zombie flick.

Also, I Saw The Devil was superb.

Unfortunately Hollywood horrror films just try to make a death more horrific than the previous one to the point where you just laugh because you can see they're running out of ideas.

Train to Busan is excellent. Love a good original horror film like Saw but they ruined it by making too many follow ups

Talking of film franchises ruined by too many sequels, I watched the original "Wrong Turn" last night (Eliza Desku), really good. Then noticed it has about six follow ups that all
follow the EXACT same premise with no attempt to be different. Think I shall be giving those a miss.

Watched the original "I spit on your grave" last night....decent revenge movie if, at times, a tad uncomfortable to watch.

As for horror, I still have nightmares about any scratching on the window having watched Salem's Lot as a kid

That movie made me sick. I know it was fake and all acted, but the violation of the woman was way to graphic, especially as it was very front and centre.

In that case never watch Martyrs (2008 French version) - it stays in your head for days. It's an interesting concept, but very very disturbing.

I've heard that film is pretty gross. All I know is it's about kidnap and torture. Hostel was not even remotely scary, but I know Martyr's is worse.

  29. Eric IS Bananman

Yeah it's pretty bad but the concept behind it is quite interesting.

The concept is can someone experience so much pain and suffering where they reach a euphoric state in between life and death and can see evidence of an afterlife. Very few reach the euphoria, the majority are driven insane

That’s why I liked the original Scream - it acknowledged the formula while still following it.

The other thing about formulaic horror films is the slasher normally moves glacially slow, yet somehow always manages to catch its victims who have been running for their lives.

Probably does help that most of the early victims are written to be acted as thick planks. Helps with the kill count. You always get the "final girl" trope - Sydney Presscot etc. There are some horror films that stray from this, some even having the killer win - which is a nice change.

I suppose the film plot, teens go to party, drink sensibly and then get a safe lift home from parents or friends (leaving wannabe killer fuming on the pavement) would lack tension.

True, but surely a group of teens going to a party and all drinking sensibly is more far-fetched a storyline than a typical slasher movie plot! :)
