Well your predictions of a self-fulfilling prophecy turned out to be accurate. Cones up at my local garage as I walked by last night. This morning local Facebook filled with petrol woe.

Car owners were filling their vehicles and jerry cans in the 'Wood last night. Ten minutes to get from the bottom of Furzehill Rd to the Station (normal journey time about 30 sec).

I type this with fingers heavy with self-loathing and bitterness.

My mouth is dry, my stomach is knotted and I am absolutely ashamed.

But... I am thinking about getting a skoda octavia estate. Does anyone drive one?

No, but the lad’s mate had a sporty RS model and it was well quick. Nothing shabby about them. However, if you get a non-sporty one then you may as well buy some slippers and settle down to ‘Cash in the attic’

  6. Cool car, instant classic in the making imo

I had an imported FTO about 20 years ago

Traded it in for an imported GTO, which I then spent a fortune on tuning to silly HP figures

Wish I'd kept them both now, if I'd ever had the room to keep a couple of toys

Apparently a German company has been converting lampposts in South London to use as chargers.

I presume through some sort of contract rather than they just pitched up and started messing with the infrastructure.

That's interesting I thought they didn't 'pull' that much current with the replacement of Na vapour lamps with LEDS...

I do often wonder how all the infrastructure will work, for example I live on a terraced street with no front gardens, so how would charging points be possible? But then I’m guessing by 2030 battery technology will have improved so much you’ll probably be able to bring the battery packs indoors to charge them effectively negating the need for charging points outside your house at least?

Actually I guess you’d just have charging points along the road and just have an automatic subscription to use them

Nothing wrong with a Skoda apart from being part of VAG. As moose says need to go VRS if street cred is an issue for you.

Once someone sorts a hot swapable pack which can be standardised, charge times and infrastructure, will not be an issue.

Thinking more about this, you buy/rent an extra one with the car which goes into the public pool.
The car has a system that keeps a track of how much juice is used and data is uploaded to a central database. If you need to go to petrol station then it's swapped for a fully charged one and you pay for the electricity used to charge it up. The database keeps a track of battery usage and keeps a track of the viability of each cell by talking to the cars, systems.

This solves range anxiety and also worries about battery longevity. The more people use the system, the more batteries there are in the system.

As with anything else, the problem area is going to be human/machine interface. It sounds great until people get involved.

And pumps are just effectively replaced with charging points where you take a new pack out and slot your old one in. Petrol stations will probably still make the same amount as a small commission on charging the packs as they do on petrol now, considering most of it is tax anyway. You can still pop into the shop now as you do as well. It could almost negate the need to charge at home, because you can pick up a ready charged pack when you want.

  16. Meanwhile, back in the real world where EV battery packs weigh 400 lbs....

Nothing easier that removing and replacing a 40kg battery, frequently and at speed.

Think how much the tech has come on in such a short period though, drones are a relatively new thing, in 10 years time the tech will be exponentially better.

There's the answer, we can get a charged battery delivered by drone.

    Sorted.

Hopefully they can arm the drones and they can patrol the queues of idiots outside petrol stations and eliminate any with more than a quarter of a tank left.

If the pack is flat and fitted under the car, releasing, dropping it down, pushing the car forward and raising the replacement up to be secured is not an engineering issue. Can even be done on a raised platform and slid in/out sideways removing the need to move the batteryless car. Relatively straight forward, even to position precisely.

The only obstacle is getting manufacturers to agree on a standard as they have a financial interest in their own battery and charging technology.

  24. The power needed to move a small drone is minuscule compared to that needed to move a ton and a half of car against grade, air and rolling resistances

  25. Yes but practical several times a week for recharging?

Yes of course, but drones only exist now because battery technology has moved on leaps and bounds, as it will continue to do.

  28. Sure

Solid state batteries are the next promising evolutionary path, but you are still talking something weighing in the hundreds of lbs

I agree at some point in the future the technology to make a car battery small light and hand held will be known, but I don’t expect to see it in my lifetime

Only needed when an instant charge is required, otherwise charge in the normal way.

Won’t there be some defining physics of how small a battery can be? Would that be fabulously small?

It is off-putting when considering electric cars that they are mostly so effing big. But I guess that’s just allowing the battery to not take up the whole thing right now.

  31. What determines battery size will be - how much power you want it to deliver, how long for, how hot can you allow it to get (it's a chemical reaction) and how long you want the battery to last (batteries deteriorate over time)

Given time engineering will continue to find ways to shrink batteries, the danger is though history shows gains are simply used to make the EV heavier, larger, go faster, have greater range

Many are already approaching Chelsea tractor proportions and that wasn't the point of EVs
