Says Elton and he has been still standing since 1983, presumably much to the annoyance of the old gits behind him.

But would you want a standing only section at the Vic?

No thanks, I'll stick to sitting and booing.

Years ago I would have been very enthusiastic about this. I even wrote to the WO once saying all-seat football stadiums were a non-starter in Britain. Nowadays, at an advanced age and having been used to sitting for years, I moan at having to stand at away games because everyone else in front of me does. Fortunately, in our part of the Rookery people only stand up when something exciting happens but I'm wondering how long it'll be before I'm tempted to get a rug and flask and transfer to the Upper GT. ;)

It's probably the point at which the offer of a free Parker pen or radio alarm clock with every Upper GT season ticket starts to look attractive.

I think it's safer to sit at games in general. I am not against a standing only section and if people want to that's their choice. Tired legs and being stood behind a Peter Crouch look-a-like would ruin it for me.

Absolutely there should be a standing section, they just need to gauge it right in terms of the allocation. They need to gauge what the lowest number of people who want to stand would be, and then set it slightly below that. That way it will always be full, everyone who wants to sit can sit, and if you want to stand but can’t you’ll be no worse off. If you assume X amount of people at any given game would want to stand then it need not impact people who want to sit of they get the allocation right.

I guess the logical place would be where the 1881 lot stand now?

When I go to games I book seats in RS5, so I can stand. My research has showed me that I tend to feel warmer when I stand, rather than sitting. I'm all about warmth.

Yes yes yes. Move the family stand to somewhere more family friendly (what on earth is it doing next the the away fans???) probably the lower Graham Taylor stand. Then make half the vic road end safe standing

Would it increase the capacity slightly? The middle blocks of the Rookery would make sense.

No, I don’t think so, assuming it will be ‘rail seats’ as they use in Europe. There is one place in the equivalent space of the seat.

Pointless putting it there surely given lack of facilities in that stand?

Having the family stand next to the away end is quite smart cos it diffuses tension. Having the 1881 safe standing next to the away end would have the opposite effect. My ideal scenario though would be alternate safe standing/heavily stewarded forced sitting all in the away end, with the away fans forced to sit and ejected if they dare to stand and the 1881 standing in between the seated away fans, bouncing, singing and blocking the away fans' view of the game. thatd b poetry in motion.

I stopped standing when I started taking children, and am too old to start again. In the UGT there aren't people standing in front of me and blocking my view, but it happens at away games. I'm all in favour of safe standing as most of the people who want to stand will be somewhere else, in their own section.

What about the northern end of the LGT, where the level is lower than the pitch and thus some seats have been removed. Putting standing there could restore that capacity?

Yes, but who wants to go to Bournemouth every other week?

I wouldn't mind at all so long as I don't have to do the actual standing.

If the ticket price is cheaper, as it ought to be, to stand up then I would certainly be strongly in favour.

I'd be in favour anyway because of the ability to move around, stretch your legs a bit, jump up and down when there's a goal etc. It also means you're not necessarily 'stuck' with someone as a neighbour. I remember going to a game a couple of seasons ago with 4Cyclones, who would have been about 7 at the time. We sat behind an elderly couple in the Vic Road end who made his first ever game there an absolute misery with complaints and whining throughout ("he's kicking the back of my seat" etc). Miserable old gits.

Rip out all the seats and make everyone stand. Anyone who complains should be made to stand on one leg

I am near the 1881 and mostly stand throughout the match anyway. It’s been like that for years now. I don’t care about this unless it’s cheaper, as Clive says. Just don’t take my seat away, I need it for halftime.

Make the Elton John sand the safe standing area. Might help to hide the 15% no shows since it opened.

That’s really not how rail seating works. They’re not like the old terracing.

It looks similar from the images I've seen, just with more and longer barriers going across. Don't mind that. Used to like getting a barrier to lean on. Presumably though you're not allocated a space where you have to stand are you? You're still allowed to move around?

  31. WillisWasTheWorst

As I understand it, with rail seating you are allocated a space as a pseudo-seat. You just stand up against the rail.

Well I'll be farked. What a thing. So you could have one of those whingers appear just before KO saying "Excuse me! Excuse ME!" (always the poshos opening line when they're on the offensive this, making you want to reply "Why? What have you done?)

    You're standing in MY space.

I suppose I'd give the same response as I'd have given if someone had said that to me in 1976 in the middle section of the Rookery.

Clive you have shown yourself to be well informed and knowledgeable on many topics, but on this one you don't have a clue :D

Yes, I'd acknowledge that. I'd thought it'd just be terraces like before, but with a few more barriers across. Didn't realise it'd still be so restrictive. Seems to be over the top really. I get Hillsborough and everything, but how many millions of other matches took place with terraces and without anything happening? There are still plenty of terraces around in the lower leagues and in other countries too with no problems. If there was a fire like at Bradford, I reckon you'd stand a lot more chance escaping off an open concrete terrace than trying to battle past loads of plastic chairs. And there's not a lot of leg space either. I'm 6'2" and find those piddly little chairs really uncomfortable.

In fact, the appeal of getting back on terraces is so tempting that I was honestly looking at Oxford City's website earlier today and wondering whether to take in a game or two down there. Ross Jenkins II is a coach there I was surprised to find. Still only 30 years old. They serve good local beers in glass bottles. The parking's easy. The prices are reasonable - £12 entry but half price for NHS and carers.

I think if it weren't for the fact that the Ko clashes with Watford games, I'd give it a try.

I've stood at home games for the last 10 years anyway, honestly there's no need to actually define a standing section when everyone already know the parts of the ground where you stand already.
