"Its a joke" bitter loser Tim Henman claimed, before declaring "its my ******* hill".

Even the most ardent critic of this dull poncey sport has to admit its some story for an 18 year old who had to qualify.

American tennis fans are as bad as American golf fans, suprised someone didnt shout out "get in the hole" at match point.

Also despite moogs intentions she shouldnt retire. Too much money to win. She should simply not do cringy interviews with dire interview questions in stage managed scenarios like that car crash of a ceremony (we love you new York "woooooo"). She should also **** off and not bother with the hoardes of people that "want a piece of her" for the next days and weeks.

Bloody brilliant. Part of the reason I couldn't care less about the football today was because I knew she was playing tonight.

A truly legendary performance. Her run will never ever be matched. Ever. It's not even really sunk in to anyone yet what she's achieved.

In terms of the best ever British sporting moments/performances, it's hard to think of any that match tonight.

Deeney verses Stoke away is the benchmark.

Fernandez sycophantically shoehorning 9/11 into her losers speech was horrendous.

Imagine pandering to that extent to the terds in the crowd.

She should sort herself out with a few acting lessons, then she can play herself in the movie

Americans are very patriotic. New York has suffered the after effects of that act, as she said, for 20 years.
That pandering was not to the crowd, it was to the nation.

Those comments will engender ‘tremendous’ good will, and if we want to be cynical, will make her a lot of $.
She’s a very switched on cookie.

I agree. You could see the moment when she suddenly remembered her management's advice and hurriedly added it at the end of the speech.

What a performance! Just brilliant in terms of skill and attitude, almost pefection.

It has made her a shoe-in for the biggest and most coveted prize of the year.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year.:D

Absolutely right. She knows there are more ATP tournaments in the USA than any other country and has just secured support from the American crowds, in every single one, as well as increasing her endorsement income.

    Emma’s run to the trophy.
    Remarkable.
Straight set wins and not one tie break.

Great entertainment and a tremendous achievement. It always seemed like Raducanu had something in hand, but still nail-biting.

Probably the sort of final to expect from players so young. Lots of errors mixed in with some wildly good play.

I thought Fernandez milked it all a bit at the end. It was a like she felt it was destiny for her to win it. More than a million dollars for second should cushion the blow.

Astonishing, just astonishing. Such ability and nerves of steel in a girl who’d not even played in a grand slam event 4 months ago. Really can’t get my head round her achievement. First qualifier, man or woman, to ever win a grand slam….and without even dropping a set. Phenomenal.

As I read elsewhere, best thing is it's a record that can only ever be equalled and never beaten.

Yes - she obviously thought Radacanu was time wasting but don’t think there was any other choice but to stop the game as she was bleeding.

Not sure either woman will be allowed in ATP events ZZ!
Impressive from both to produce such a high level.
Doubtless now ALL coaches who have ever set foot in the Borough of Bromley, including Roy,De Boer etc, will be claiming credit for ER's development.
This will be a refreshing change to the two dozen who did so after her semi final win!
Tennis coaches of Kent and south London please grow up!

In all my 45 plus years of following sport, these past two weeks culminating in last night have been the most amazingly unexpected, most wonderful, most life-affirming I can remember. A girl I watched play juniors in 2018 lifting a slam just three years later. Wow.

A simply fantastic achievement by a lovely person and a terrific player whose mindset, mental fortitude and all round game skills are streets above the many other British ladies players who’ve tried hard yet fallen by the wayside.

After years of watching the Americans, Czechs, Serbs, Poles, Dutch etc win the slams, to wake up this morning knowing our country finally has a female major winner again is just stunning. And the fact she’s a teenage qualifier without a single WTA tour test win to her name is a fairytale.

The biggest sporting shock I have ever known, and the best.

PS I hope Fernandez will one day win a slam too. She’s a terrific player, and as she showed in her post-match speech, a classy human being too.

I enjoyed this tweet from Adrian Edmondson yesterday, which was in a similar vein:

“I notice news outlets are running out of people who have met Emma Raducanu. I thought I saw her once outside the pasty van at Reading services - it wasn't her, but I THOUGHT it was her... I am available for media interviews at the going rate!”

I was as delighted for Emma as anybody, but once the euphoria died down I started to worry. At only 18 she's been thrown into a world of agents, sponsors and media interviews that she didn't expect and wasn't prepared for. From having fun playing her favourite sport she's now a celeb in the ultra-competitive and I would imagine lonely life of an international tennis star.

Is this really what she wanted from life or would she rather go to university and have a career using her Mandarin? But always wondering what might have been if she'd stuck to tennis.

Yes talk of gongs , 150 million deals .

In a sport where there is a lot of competition and we have seen many different ladies win a Grand Slam in recent years .

She will have to deal with the increase in hype and expectations.

Yes, I'm sure she'd be much better off sat in an office translating documents into mandarin rather than travelling round the world as a tennis superstar for 15 years, becoming a multimillionaire and marrying some tennis playing hunk. Then retiring in her 30s and settling into a cushy media job for a couple of hours a week.

Yes, the crushing life of an office drone is surely much more appealing to an 18 year old.

I heard this today. Surely something like an MBE is awarded for services to (whatever profession they're in). It's a magnificent effort to win the US Open but she's only been playing at this standard for 5 mins and this award should maybe be given at the end of her career is continues on it's current trajection

She's an intelligent and personable girl who speaks a language much in demand in business, diplomacy and academia. I'm sure she'd do better than office drone. There might even be a lot of foreign travel.

As a tennis superstar she'll be under constant pressure to perform well, and besieged by people wanting to make money from her. Her peers will be potential competitors so the only people she will be able to truly relax with will be ex-players many years older.

I wouldn't want that, whatever the money, but she probably won't have a choice. A lot to take on at only 18.

    I wonder what IBB thinks.

I agree that something like an MBE is somewhat daft. However, I think her meteoric rise will probably encourage more girls and boys to take up tennis than most other attempts, so she probably has managed to perform a great service to the sport.

That's my point. Her life is now mapped out for her and it will be difficult to change course even if she wants to (which I hope she doesn't).

I'll be rooting for her to become one of the greats. But Jennifer Capriati is an example of how it can all go wrong.

She needs to carry on doing what she's doing, seems like she enjoys it unlike Capriati or Agassi etc.

If you turned out for Watford at 18 and scored a hat trick in your first game, would you be bitter about not being able to do a degree at Oxford? I think there's about 2m other reasons Raducanu is quite happy about now. Absolute garbage that she might regret it.

  35. Happy bunny

Happy bunny Cheered up a bit

She probably won't regret it and I hope she doesn't but you can't be certain. Absolute garbage to think that you know what a teenager you've never met will think about her life of relentless pressure in five years time.
