    I have to agree . Bachman-Turner is not a Premier Div no.1 . An acceptable no. 2 maybe .

The Southampton goal was Cathcart's mistake.

The problem with yesterday's first goal was the defence sits too deep in the area because Bachmann won't come for crosses. From the position in the screenshot they should push out to the penalty spot. Ngakia is too deep, and the Wolves player in the shot actually moves away from the goal to stay on side.

Bachmann's starting position is too deep, a couple of steps forward with the defence pushed up, he's got space and time to catch the ball where Ngakia is standing.

If you've watched Foster's Gopro videos, he pushes the defence up constantly which tells the defenders that any ball in behind them is his responsibility, as any good keeper does.

So if you include Bachmann's Dracula complex, you can add that he's a poor organiser.

Sorry, I'll take Foster in goal any day.

The defensive position is not bad however where we agree is Bachmans role.
Because the cross , admittedly a good one, is just inside the 6 yard area then any defender trying to deal with it will be facing the goal whereas if the keeper gets any touch at all on the ball it should away from the danger.

I wonder if Rob Elliot is still any good? He certainly used to be (and he's a couple of years younger than Ben)

We haven't recruited what we need to across the team. Goalkeeper, centre back, right back, midfield and up front. All need strengthening and haven't been, because we are skint, because we spent all our money on getting Deeney, Success, Gray, Hughes and Chalobah out.

He isn't good enough, if fans know it then so will his team mates. We are already conceding too many avoidable goals.

I wouldn't say he isn't goo enough per se. It's his confidence on crosses that is so criminally bad. I remember that game against Tranmere where he dropped a simple ball and they scored in that crazy 3-3 FA Cup game. Since then I've hardly seen him attempt to catch a ball.

He's clearly got some issues, but it's really strange. He's tall enough and seems to have good fielding ability. Rarely does he spill a shot fired at him. He's actually very good at clutching the ball. So why is there such a problem with going to crosses? I think it's purely down to confidence and the fear of making a mistake. But he's got to be a lot braver. Look at Foster. He's nowhere near as good as Gomes when coming for the ball (Gomes being brilliant at catching crosses) but he's fearless and extremely positive. Even if he screws up, very often the ball is diverted so it puts off the attackers enough and the chance goes begging or it's hacked clear.

Keepers are well protected too. So often even if they are pushed by their own player, the referee will award a foul.

But.....if he doesn't learn and doesn't at least try to claim a cross, then he cannot continue to be the number one keeper. He's directly cost us the last two games, so Foster (if fit) has to come straight back in.

This is a good point and a point I’ve made a few times, he is actually excellent at holding onto shots, one of the best I’ve seen in fact. So there is absolutely no reason why he can’t be equally good at coming for, and holding crosses, if anything if you’re good at holding on to shots fired at pace towards you, then surely a slower ball with far more time to catch it would be significantly easier?

He obviously just has a massive mental block when it comes to making a decision to come off his line, when a ball is fired towards him he has no choice but to try and hold it, which he is very good at, but only because it doesn’t involve a voluntary decision

He also goes backwards into the goal quite often, it's not just rooted to the line, it's behind the line.

Can only presume that when he was a youth team player at Stoke, he was brought into first team training a couple of times and bombarded with long throws into the box and that mentally broke him.

I think he's a closet Dodge Ball player.

I really wish we had the choice of Dhalberg, Elliot was pretty good, why not give him the cup game vs Stoke, see how he does and if it's alright send him out against the Magpies. Generally I think Bachmann is a solid keeper but unless he can
improve in these areas, he will find himself back behind Mr. Go Pro in the pecking order.

From the extended highlights @reids posts regularly, Dahlberg's distribution is very poor, regularly kicking it long out of play. At League 1 it isn't such an issue but at PL level especially it will hurt us. His handling isn't poor but does have an occasional flap in him when handling a high ball. Like Bachmann though he seems to be mentally extremely strong, with any mistakes made not getting to him which is very positive. Another year or two and he'll be ready I think.

Surely people can see he did ok in the championship for two reasons - 1 The defence at that level was pretty good - 2 It was the Championship.

We really need an upgrade. Hopefully Foster will be back, because he is better than Bachmann. That does not mean we wouldn’t have lost the last three league games, because as we know its not the defence that matters when you cant score goals.

Convinced that even if Bachmann isn't the answer, neither is Foster, while he did at times save our bacon last season, he also made some pretty calamitous errors

Foster was playing with a broken finger for much of that period. One more error from Bachmann & I'd give him another go.

Bachmann is just too timid and that timidity transfers to uncertainty in the defence unit as a whole. He’s really not good enough to be a prem #1 but may be good enough in the champ next season.

But we cant do anything about it until January. So of the two - once fit, it has to be Foster

Didn’t Bachmann once almost come out of his box to collect the ball against Forest which almost cost us a point as we were lucky not to concede a penalty (and possibly go down to ten men)?

Maybe it was that incident that has caused him to be more cautious, but this is the Premier League and you need everyone out there to be brave as the margins are so slim.

We could really have done with Gomes teaching him how to become a fearless maniac.

There was no almost about it, he was absolutely outside his box - thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten all about that, haha.

In total fairness, we would have gone down to ten men, but it would have been impossible to concede a penalty from that position.

I’m not saying Bachmann isn’t injured, but Foster’s comments in his Norwich video heavily imply he was just dropped.

Foster just trying to get inside Bachmann's head. Clever stuff. Gnawing away at that wafer thin confidence to retain his starting place.

If he has an issue with crosses then they should have situation training with him. Get a machine to launch balls into the box close to him or away and have several players mimic the conditions inside a crowded box. Practice makes perfect or at least better. See how he copes and then advise him on his situational awareness and if he is making the right choice.

As for Dahlberg set up cones around the pitch and check his mechanics when kicking out of hand and get him to practice hitting a specified target. Again repetition can improve him in regards of distribution.

If you have some time, I'd recommend watching the Fozzcast with Gary Lewin ex England and Arsenal physio. It gives a real insight into team selection and training techniques and if medicals are carried out on deadline day.

    It's really fascinating.

I know we’re talking about a world class keeper, but Ederson just came and claimed a free kick in the last minute of the game that he caught virtually on the edge of his box. You need a keeper that is able and willing to do that as much as possible.

Foster’s latest vlog shows Bachmann training on Friday before the Newcastle game. Was his omission from the squad actually to reinforce the injury story and spare his blushes?

Oh yeah he's clearly been dropped like Sierralta. Xisco drops them from the squad entirely rather than putting them on the bench though. Players must love it, especially when other players make mistakes and keep their place...

He probably has an injury but we won’t know what it is or how serious of course !
