I suppose one explanation is that many of us have been continually hung up Hughes and Chalobah’s potential, we’re basing their perceived values on what we think might eventually happen one day, that they’ll eventually turn a corner and become incredible premier league players getting called up regularly for England.

Perhaps the rest of the football world just see two players who have gone backwards over four years, been relatively injury prone and have only showed glimpses of any potential quality for fleeting moments. They’re probably viewed as having the potential to go even further backwards, if anything.

Hence we could barely give either away, because the potential we think they had was never actually going to materialise. We had fans valuing them at £20m and £50m respectively recently, the rest of the football world clearly don’t agree.

There’s a disconnect for you, but it’s all explicable from the POV of everyone involved, even if not everyone (except Fulham) got what they wanted.

Well presumably Chalobah also got what he wanted or possibly more, otherwise he would’ve been mad to have moved?

Big signing-on fee and the hope that a new environment will kick-start his career.

If and its a big IF he was refusing to play then why pay £40k per week for no return likewise why keep him on £40k per week if Xisco isnt going to play him due to his contract situation..... Also add the timing of his departure oth at a time when clubs outside the top 10 of the prem are skint and on the last day of the transfer window, plus his injury record into the mix and maybe its the best we could do ..... If we kept him until Jan he would be worthless and we would of payed him handsomely ..... it was a no win situation for an average player who is not prem standard imo. What would you suggest Chalobah is worth now he's contracted at Fulham ?

Hence why I said "IF". Its possible Silva's lying, but its a very odd thing to lie about.

But I can't for a minute believe the best price we could've got for a promotion-winning 1st team player is £0.

Clearly it was. Or do you think Gino's heart softened and he just decided to do his old mate Silva a favour ?

One of the original lockdown crew, didn't want to sign a new deal, club gets some hefty wages off the books. He won't be missed.

Plus if Fulham pay £5m for Quina at the end of the season that basically covers his and Chalobah's fees. Neither are worth more than a couple of million.

Wait. We can’t criticise someone for selling something that’s worth something, for nothing, on the basis that he’ll be worth nothing in the future?

I don’t understand this theory - you are basically (sarcastically) suggesting we should never criticise deals on the face of it because we don’t know the details? Surely there becomes a point where you can look at it and just safely assume it’s not a great deal?

We can't afford to stick him in the reserves through spite. **** knows whats gone on in this case. I suspect footballers (and their slimy agents) can earn more money by flipping clubs every so often. So for Chalobah, getting 5 minutes for England is his pinnacle. He recognises this and has decided to flip.

Even if he has gone for free, I suspect that there may be an agreement that Fulham pay us a few quid if they get promotion.

Yep. Being annoyed at losing a first team player for free is tantamount to sacrilege, apparently.

Of course, you can assume it's not a great deal and wonder why that is. I'm saying there is a reason that we gave him away, if we did. If you think Gino is an idiot because he could have sold him for £3m/£5m and chose not to, then fine. I doubt very much that anyone, even Gino, would be that stupid, so I expect there are circumstances which we aren't aware of which dictated the deal we had to do. That's all. Personally I'd express surprise we couldn't get a fee of any description for him and wonder why we couldn't, rather than think Gino chose to take £zero rather than sell him for a decent fee, he must be an idiot.

    All fair points.

I guess the biggest point I’d point to is the middle ground that hasn’t been mentioned - in the face of no one offering us a fee, we keep the player until at least January seeing as we only have 23 named players. We could still let him walk for free in January if desired.

Of course there’s reasons why the they’ve chosen to do the deal now, I agree. But given our own club hate to communicate properly with their own fans, they have left themselves open to criticism from those fans needlessly in that case.

On the face of things (and that’s all we can comment on here) the club seem to have done a poor deal IMO.

I'm sure it would have been contemplated. I guess if he wasn't going to contribute, wanted to join Fulham and didn't want to be here, was possibly going to be a distraction for team morale, what is the point in paying his salary until then ? If we can't get a fee now, what wait for 5 months to release him, he would be less saleable then ? I'm sure they put some thought into the decision but we don't know why we couldn't get a fee, lots of possible reasons.

What is odd, is that if Chalobah was so toxic that he can't be around the squad then why he wasn't given the Hughes treatment? Keeping him till January would have cost £1m in wages I guess, and would seem sensible given we don't have 25 players. Given Pozzo was willing to lash £9 million for a deal for Mogi Bayet to broker a 6th choice midfielder (which Chalobah would have been) it all seems a bit strange. That said, nothing Pozzo does really surprises me anymore. He marches to his own drum beat.

As you say though who knows what went on. Maybe Chalobah went rogue only recently. If we manage to stay up then it will just be a footnote.

Also, whilst it’s a possibility, are we really expected to believe that someone who was entrusted with the captaincy down the stretch last season (and excelled with it during a great run of form) has suddenly become toxic? Just comes across as poor reasoning to me for those scrabbling for excuses as to why we have been told we have given away such a player for free.

I think the biggest issue with this (and other) deals etc is the clubs continued insistence on being silent or to give the absolute least amount of information possible to fans/public. If Chalobah wasn’t ill or was refusing to train, then say as much. If he wanted to leave, tell us.

There’s a few cases where I look at the clubs communication and I think it’s understandable why they are coy - but far too often it’s just pointless smoke and mirrors.

Speaking of which it would be good if the club could clear up the Pape Gueye embarrassment now that over a year has passed.

Yep. I think the conclusion is that the whole thing is very odd. We don’t know, and may never know, why he went from very decent champ midfield option to someone who clearly wasn’t going to contribute to the cause at all and no club was prepared to pay a fee for.

Let's not forget that for the most part, he's been extremely crap for us. Watched Capoue for 4 years and thought he was capable of rouletting people on the edge of his own box, and spraying 50-yard worldie passes on the regular.

He wasn’t, I was surprised to hear Leicester who were flying and looked certain to reach the CL wanted him. He received quite a bit of strong criticism at the time from us and not coincidentally that was when the season reached its nadir with the performances against QPR and Coventry and the ham-fisted Gray interview. He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about playing in the Championship after his failure to make it at the top level after such a promising start to his career, whereas players like Kiko, Sema and Cleverley whilst not necessarily as technically gifted just got on with it regardless of the dubious tactics, formation or depressing backdrop of COVID.

Though I don’t agree with a lot of Moog’s opinions and think some of his opinions on our players and managers are far too harsh, I think Chalobah (like Capoue) is one of those fair-weather players he was alluding to, great once he knuckled down and an important part of our promotion push, but if he’d applied himself more throughout the season we may have won the league.

I don't really agree with this. Chalobah hadn't played regular football for a number of years before last season because of injury. He was no great shakes but he was obviously finding his way back into the game, as evidenced by him regularly coming off on the hour mark. I don't think it had anything to do with his attitude or thinking he was too good for the Championship. Once he was up to speed, he was a pivotal part of promotion.

His injury was a horrific one. Many players don't come back at all from such injuries. Stands to reason that it was going to take a long time for him to trust his body again after that. Sadly, I think its robbed him of the critical 'growth' years (23-26) of his career and he wont hit the heights he was once touted for as a result.

On paper it looks a terrible deal for us but ultimately If the 2 million saved wages allowed us to get a better player and they contribute to us staying up it's a good deal. If we still go down and Fulham go up, you'd have to say we were shafted
