Might as well drop this here, 2.15 is a highlight for me.

You wait ages for a drama series about how the wealthy holiday and then two come along at once, both excellent.

White Lotus (Now TV) is set in Hawaii where an assortment of guests are staying at the hotel of the same name. Brilliantly acted, insightful, novelistic and at times laugh out loud White Lotus is an exploration of luxury's disappointment, the massive divide between served and server and the chaos wealthy liberals cause when they try to make things better.

Having enjoyed White Lotus it was with no little trepidation that we approached Nine Perfect Strangers (Prime), not least of all because it stars the almost universally awful Nicole Kidman. However Nine Perfect Strangers is another treat. Kidman is almost perfectly cast as the weird and scary new age kook who runs a swanky retreat, (Probably only Gwyneth Paltrow could have been better cast). Again the angst of the unhappy wealthy (and less wealthy) is on display with a great cast illuminating their character flaws and strengths. The psychology is a little trite (if you are angry bash something etc) but then most helpful psychology for those who are not truly traumatised is - get a job, get fit, eat well, forgive yourself, be honest, get a new hairdo etc. Nine Perfect Strangers is again intelligent, novelistic and an entertaining diversion.

The Clangers, old over new but new is actually very good.

We’ve been watching Nine Perfect Strangers. I’ve white knuckled the annoying ‘that didn’t happen in the book’ stuff from my wife and I’m really enjoying it. It’s refreshing to have mostly sympathetic characters even if the flawed characteristics are done in broad strokes.

I’ve enjoyed some of the pantomime angry faces from the lady with anger management issues, the mega dad played by Michael Shannon and the excellent casting of the very plastic woman who won’t be lottery.

Nicole Kidman is just odd. The best thing I ever saw her in was the early 90s Australian film ‘Flirting’ with Noah Taylor.

Finished Bojack Horseman last night, watched the final 6 episodes in one, long binge.

Incredible show. It and Mr Robot are just in a league of their own.

Nicole Kidman’s accent in 9 perfect strangers is one of the most bizarre things I’ve heard. Sometimes (bad) Russian, sometimes Aussie, sometimes LA.

It really is an outstanding show. Takes a while to find its feet in S1, but good grief is it worth it.

It’s also quite bizarre that all these young folk are supposed to find her quite irresistible. Er no, they’d just think she was someone’s nan.

I'm three eps in (and I re-read the first few compendia) of the 'Y The Last Man' (odd that the graphic novels were produced by a team of blokes yet the series has a "very female" production crew). The comics were raved about by both fans and critics. The TV series has updated the world to something very similar to the toxic US political scene of today and it really, really works. I noticed that it's only released as a streaming series in the US - presumably that's to counter the wokenado that's going to arise when the various 'gangs' are introduced and the portrayal of trans-men. There are 10 graphic novels in the series - it will be interesting to see what story lines they follow.

    Highly, highly recommended.

I'll give it a go on your recommendation. My first thought had been that looked a right load of glossy cobblers and not in the same league as 'The Children of Men' which (covering a similar sort of theme) is both a proper good novel and hard-edged fillum, but then you know that already you big (dystopian) sci-fi nerd. :)

I'm very interested to see what they're going to do in this ("...three books..." !!!!!!!!!!):

And also the upcoming TV version of this. I'm not that interested in the upcoming film - because the TV mini-series really did it justice (although in a Pertwee - Baker era 'Who' way - excellent acting coupled with really engaging scripts that allow you to ignore the frankly w&kn costumes and naff SFX).

White Lotus has been recommended to me by a friend - glad to hear additional plaudits for it here before I embark on it. Also on my “to watch” list is Succession, which has been recommended to me by numerous people. I just rattled through Bridgerton as I wanted to see what the fuss was about. It was basically just Downton Abbey with sex scenes.

There’s a scene with the English character, played by a Welshman where he goes full on yacky da valleys.

Succesion is probably up there as one of my all time favourites. You need 3/4 episodes to get to know the characters, up to that point it may seem a little slow, but it really isn’t beyond that. It also has moments of fantastic comedy that cracked me up at times even though it’s not a comedy. The third season is coming soon so a good time to watch it.

I’m looking forward to Foundation too. Hari Seldon looks well cast. No reason why they can’t regender others.

It’ll be interesting to see how they integrate the action. Foundation is about movements in history. Massive navies assemble and then don’t fight because it’s unnecessary. Slaughter takes place out of sight. And then there is the Mule…

I’ve never been interested in Dune. It looks a caper and not proper Hard Sci/Fi future history. I won’t allow myself fun in that genre.

So I watched the first episode and my thoughts are contained therein. Don’t read if you haven’t yet seen.

A mixed bag really. Visually very good and generally well produced. The depiction of the terrorist event which effectively signals the beginning of the end of the Galactic Empire was a brilliant and stunning invention.
Not so good was the necessity to paint the rulers of the Empire quite so arch. Asimov does point at their brutality, but less their character. I would have liked more of Asimov’s own dialogue, I know it almost off by heart and in general it’s superior and the changes to the order of narrative don’t really help. And finally the approach to mysticism is a bit off. The show’s creators seem to take it seriously whereas for Asimov it was all a fraud. Mystery lay in the wonder of science, numbers and history. But I shall keep watching and enjoyed it a lot.

Anyone watching Alma’s not Normal on BBC and iPlayer?

Terrific comedy, very raw, very crude and very intelligently written.

Also just caught up to speed with BCS, the fifth season was very good indeed.

Has anyone watched The Godfather of Harlem? I see the actor who plays Gus Fring is in it

    Started watching Yellowstone recently.

Very watchable, although I wouldn't term it an instant classic. The setting is somewhat unusual since it's based on a very rural ranch area of Montana in the modern US, something you don't see very often.

Decent cast, although it's often difficult to find someone to root for (apart from supporting character Lloyd, who's a ******* gem).

I like how it handles the Native American perspective. Very different to what you see in most stuff, and in a good way. My wife is Lakota and says it's one of the best mainstream takes on Native American issues she's seen (although the show is very much not based around that topic).

    Bernard Haitink, The Enigmatic Maestro.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000n1jp

Bernard Haitink the great Dutch conductor of the world famous Concertgebouw retired in 2019. I caught his last UK performance of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. The standing ovation went on for over ten minutes matching the cheers at the start of the performance. Haitink is a highly regarded Mahlerian and Brucknerian and advocate of Shostakovich who he met in Moscow in 1975 a few months before the Russian genius passed away of heart failure in hospital. He is also one of the last great conductors of the twentieth century to have made it into the twenty first.

The BBC broadcast a retrospective of his life including his final ever performance with the VPO in Lucerne which covered his time in Nazi occupied Holland and the Hongerwinter and what went on and his distaste for nationalism and even applause. Well worth watching @Keighley @I Blame Bassett. Suffice to say I have many CD's of recordings by the said maestro and while sad he retired he has left a great recorded legacy.

The adverts on Sky say Monday 18th at 9pm, but I’ve also read it will be available from 2am on the 18th on Sky Atlantic and Now TV, so I’m assuming that’s to download and watch all of them.
