    Good Morning.

So a little question to start off the first day of the Deeney-less era..

Who is now our current leading scorer of league goals for us?

Believe it's Sarr and Gray tied on 19 (with Gray having 2 cup goals to Sarr's one, although he's almost certainly off so will leave the mantle solely for Sarr)

    I'd go for Tom Cleverley

For us? João Pedro I'd assume. Everybody else has gone!

Edit: somehow I forgot about Sarr haha

But this is surely the correct answer.

His loan spell where he was inexplicably a talented winger and has become more limited over time

Agree with most of this but the point about selling 5 years ago is only clear with the benefit of hindsight - am not sure there were many if any on here calling for us to sell him at that point. His powers waned which they were bound to, but I think they went quicker than most of us expected.

It show that the hideous sporting cliche about form being temporary but class being permanent is a complete load of ******** - age gets to everyone, however good you were

League goals it’s Sarr (and Gray) on 19.

Cleverley has 18. Nobody else is yet in double figures.

Of our starting eleven in the FA Cup Final, only two players now remain at the club.

    It’s rarely dull eh.

He has 18 apparently (11 on loan + 7 since returning)

That would be a great idea Cude, it could possibly be the best attended pre-season game ever me thinks

Presumably 9 is taken. But 3+6=9. If he's a success (not that one) I bet he'll be 9 next season.

I've been wondering if this is a relatively recent, social media-related phenomenon. It seems some people equate holding strong opinions with either strength of character or depth of knowledge and, I suspect, the opposite is sometimes true.

Did people always hold such entrenched opinions and express them so vehemently? I suppose they did, but the difference was that in a face-to-face conversation there are checks and balances that help to add perspective. So if you were stood there in a pub, feet six feet apart, rocking back and forth on your heels, chest out, chin up saying: "Deeney is absolute dog's droppings and deserves to be fired into the Midlands by cannon," everyone around you would roll their eyes and see the absolutism for what it is – faintly ridiculous.

Yes, absolutely. At the time I thought we should seriously consider selling as I thought he was probably worth a bit less, but the it depends on things like availability of replacements. But I certainly I didn't expect his form to drop off as much as it did. It was marginal then, but hindsight shows it would definitely have been the right thing to do.

You are conflating his difficulties with those of the club in general. Yes of course he did less well in the Premiership from summer 2016. They all did. First to dip alarmingly was Ighalo who had been part of that great first Premier season partnership. But given the right player alongside, like Deulofeu briefly, he could still be effective.

He stayed maybe two seasons too long, but even in our relegation season he showed flashes of effectiveness, for example against Liverpool. Injuries were beginning to tell. Hardly the first good player to have that issue. In any case your hindsight is worth eff all squared really.

I think your story is speculative to say the least and a bit disingenuous to wish him so well after essentially claiming he was stealing a living, letting us down for five years.

As I said, he gave 6 years of great service.
I'm not as binary or vindictive as you think I should be? Don't worry about it.

Up to 2016 his stats speak for themselves, it was from then that he began to decline, but hindsight is a wonderful thing, how many of us were calling for us to sell to Leicester? The next season, we had £30m in supposed striking talent in Gray and Success, as well as Okaka--Silva did try to use Gray, but he, shock horror, wasn't up to it. The next season, the narrow 4-4-2 with Deeney alongside Deulofeu and Gray got the best out of him (against the smaller clubs at least!), although there were signs by the end of that season that everyone had worked us out. Despite his good work in the cup final season, I feel that summer would have been a good time to reassess our formation and Deeney's role in the squad, but we sleepwalked into the next season, and the one striker we did get that could have been more dynamic for us up top...was injured for most of the season. I think certainly in the last year or so, his influence has become negative, our success last season was largely in spite of him than because of him, but overall I think the problem was some horrendous dealings up front

Since this news of Troy going to Brum hit the headlines, you have only posted twice on the two threads that are covering it. Both your posts were to have a go at me, more than likely to try and drag the thread into a petty squabble yet again.

Why don't you actually post on the subject of the thread and actually explain what your view is of Deeney's performances over the past decade, him leaving, and his new career with his boyhood club? I'm sure there are posters that would be more interested in that than your view on me.

Whatever his personal shortcomings, the club handled the whole thing pretty poorly in recent years. The decision makers were far too close to him and were unable to make the choices that needed to be made and the "issue" was compounded by the arrival of Andre Gray.

I think in 2016 his levels just naturally dropped when he realised he wasn't going to get into England despite probably deserving it at the time, and being handed out a monster contract that realistically tied him to Watford as a starting striker for the rest of his career (or at least the best years of it).

At no stage from about 2015 to 2020 did Deeney have any genuine competition for his place. Okaka, Oulare, Andre Gray, Jerome Sinclair, Isaac Success. Even when he was out of form / injured he was still the best option because the back ups were so disgracefully poor. He may well have found a second wind in the same way Holebas did once we brought in Masina.

Yes, I agree, I and many others have been shouting out for more attacking signings. To me, it was more important than extra defenders back then and for me, this was the Pozzo's worse mistake continual error.

But some players respond to extra competition, others prefer the lack of a constant battle for their place, are more relaxed and thrive. But some settle back into some sort of comfort zone when there is no competition, I think he was the latter. I can only speculate at the reasons why, but that doesn't alter the fact that he was underforming.

I mean he did often come back for the start of the season out of shape, maybe if he'd had a serious challenger for a space in the first XI, he would have been in better shape (although last season he began his campaign out of shape too, by which time there was at least one striking option who was definitely better than him)

The complete irony being that this is the one summer he seemed to come back with no weight issues - and he’s gone.

I don't necessarily agree with this. In the year we went down after the Covid break, Gray should've been starting. No way should Deeney have started with serious strapping on 1 leg. There was something happening behind the scenes imo that enabled Deeney to continue playing. Gray may or may not have got the goals to keep us up, we will never know, but he should've played and been given the opportunity whilst Deeney was in that state.
