For some players it's about more than money. He spent 9 years on Corinthians' books as a youngster but only played a handful of games before moving to Shakhtar Donetsk. He's from Sao Paolo state so it's a homecoming for him both professionally and personally.

Willian also gave almost nothing to Arsenal.

Whatever criticisms we have of Troy in recent years, he has given the bulk of his career to this club. I am not suggesting that means we should be paying it off in its entirity, but it would be more justified than Willian walking with £20m on the back of his contribution.

I imagine the club are just working out how to gracefully remove him from the third kit promo campaign. Whoever it was who suggested that was a sign he probably wasn’t leaving clearly knows his stuff.

Hope he does well at Birmingham and get's a few goals under his belt this season, much better than sitting on the bench for another season.

A 3rd Round FA Cup tie against Birmingham could be very interesting.

I imagine it can’t be announced until Watford have made a suitably soppy, grovelling video to encourage a giant fan bukkake to honour him.

(I have always maintained that I value his contribution over the years and will end hostilities when he stops being a drain on finances and an obstacle to better players getting more minutes. I intend to keep to this but it will take time to adjust).

    A sad day

Rose with the club and captained us throughout the second-most successful period in the club's history

Hopefully he has a great few years in Birmingham and then is back in some capacity or otherwise

Farewell Troy, and thank you for the memories. Like GT you can’t deny he created or was part of some big moments for this club. Not often now you get a pro on the books at a high level for 10+ years.

Hope the rest of his career is what he hopes or expects.

That video is a little... strange.

I thought I'd have some level of sadness watching it but nope, it just felt a little weird. A montage of his goals would have been better (no doubt still to come).

Him dropping in his book at the start of it just felt strange, as did the love in for Gino and particularly Duxbury.

Him and Duxbury have always had a close/strange relationship.

Deeney would have been gone last summer if it wasn’t for Duxbury’s personal intervention. See the odd statement protecting Deeney over Ivic too.

Troy has been a big part of the Watford journey over the last 11 years. Sad that he is going, but it’s the right call and hopefully he will do well at Brum.

JP 2 seasons ago (and part of last season) is one example. I don’t necessarily mean just strikers though. Perhaps without Deeney being a mainstay we’d have had the flexibility to change shape and play an extra midfielder, or play with wingers or whatever the change may have been.

But it’s all academic now. He’s left and when we look back I think all most of us will remember is the play-off semi goal, the 20+ goals in 3 back-to-back Championship seasons, his link-up with Ighalo in the 2015/16 season and a crucial FA cup semi final penalty.
Fairplay to Troy, not a bad legacy.

Easy to forget just how good he was for us. 3 seasons scoring 20+ goals, then two pl seasons scoring 15 and 10 goals, which is a pretty good return. At his best he would bully defences and also make every player around him much better (see Ighalo and Vydra). A Watford legend, one of our greatest ever.

    GoingDown "The Stability"

A true club legend. Will be spoken about long into the future. No-one seemed to do more to push the club in the media and I'm sure he always did give 100% even when his ability didn't allow it.

Most of my favourite moments as a supporter involve him in some way or another. His partnership with Matej Vydra will live long in the memory. I'll remember him for these rather than the difficult last few years.

Hope he does well at Birmingham and I'll be delighted if he pushes them on to promotion.

Sad to see him go, but he's hardly played in the last 8/9 months so I'm kind of used to him not being on the teamsheet so for me the impact of him leaving is diminished.

Wish him well and he's earned Watford legend status.

Definitely best for both parties that he leaves, but would be nice for him to play against us one more time so he can get a standing ovation for his years of contribution.

Considering there were a lot of fears before the season started that a misfiring Deeney still held so much sway at the club that he’d be a regular this campaign, I think we have to acknowledge the powers that be maybe weren’t so hoodwinked after all.

Yesterday’s starting eleven also showed us that when everybody is fully available, Cleverley and Sema aren’t in our best eleven, but played the early matches mainly I’d suggest so we had some good experience on the pitch to kick off the season. I cannot imagine Cathcart will be either once the maddeningly often unavailable Femenía is finally seen again.

Gray looks close to departing. Success has gone. The Hughes situation has been sorted. (Last year we still had players with us past the transfer window who didn’t want to be). The midfield has been bolstered out of all recognition from the pre-season matches when there were fears Gosling and Cleverley might get regular starts alongside each other.

So things have very much improved I’d say from a lot of the doom and gloom many felt a few weeks ago.

    However...

To be the perfect window, that defence still needs something tomorrow or I fear for all the good work this summer, we will still be in big trouble at times this season.

    The clock is ticking...
