I guess there will always be something it in for us as I assume we can avoid paying what salary Brum will pay, and of course we don't want a sulky experienced player milling around. But I don't see why we should top up his pay to 100%. Eg. he should be happy to earn 75% of his contract value with Brum paying say £15k/w and we top up to 75% of his current salary.

That’s up to Deeney. Depends on how much be values playing for Brum as opposed to limited game time here.

I feel for a few forum members who've made it a life habit to relentlessly and seriously monitor Deeney's waistline over the last 8 years.

I guess when he leaves, it'll be like the end of The Truman Show for them.

If that’s what Deeney wants or he’ll just stay, then clearly we will have to top up to 100%.

At least the club planned for his departure and signed Rose and Tufan to play the Deeney role.

Or decide the saving is not sufficient to release him from his contract to play for the club he wants to join and keep him as a bit part player. We do have some bargaining power here.

He'll also know that he will almost certainly never earn as much in a year for the rest of his life as he would do in this year with us. This is his final year on a bumper Premier League contract. I can't see any reason why he would accept anything other than a very modest net reduction across our pay off and his new wages combined.

To a very limited extent, he’s not in our first team plans, so baring an injury apocalypse we'll be paying him £100k per week to do nothing, other than be a potential bad influence around the place. If the club want to refuse the move and keep him that’s their look out, but it would make very little financial sense.

  11. The undeniable truth

.. ....as opposed to paying him £80k/w to not even be on our books. Little financial sense but if it's positioned as a credible possibility, Troy will be more likely to compromise on his severance to secure the move.

  12. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

There is no reason for Troy to compromise on what he’s already contractually obliged to earn. It’s down to club to decide how much they want to save something by shipping him out, vs proving a point by sitting him on our bench for the rest of the season.

As I've posted elsewhere. There's a potential win-win in this.
    1) Agree a new contract or buyout with a payment schedule at a reduced wage rate, but spread out over several years (let's say 4 just for arguments sake). Troy still gets all his money, but Gino/WFC from a Profit/Loss standpoint only have to show 25% of the wages as a cost this year. That saves Gino ~ 2.7 million this year vs. what he would have paid if Troy stays.
    2) Negotiate a transfer or Loan (whichever makes sense) with Bham for Troy's services.
    3) Troy possibly agrees a wages reduction/payment reduction based on what Bham pays him.

Even if #2 is a free and 3 doesn't happen, WFC still is ~2.7 million better off financially this year. Their Troy wages problem continues on into the future, but at a much more digestible rate of ~900K per year.

All that aside, anyone of us who says they'd willingly take 3.7 million off the desk and slide it back over the table and say "Nah, thanks M8, I'd rather go play in my home town" isn't being honest with themselves. Troy can take the 3.7 million and go play in Bham next year. Maybe Troy has so much money that he might, but none of us would, neither would most players (Willian notwithstanding).

He wants to have his cake and eat it. He wants to leave so he shouldnt demand to be paid after he's left. He's basically saying I dont want to work the final year of my contract but I want you to pay me for it. That's selfish and greedy in my opinion. Mr Watford my arse!! He can F off back to Brum the useless fat fook!

You are missing the point. Of course there is. He's only contractually entitled to earn that salary if he stays and is available for us. If he wants to earn that he just has to stay and sit out the rest of his contract, mainly playing and training with the U23s, and never play for Brum. But he's keen to end that contract and drop down a league to finish his career with Brum. We aren't obliged to pay him a penny after he leaves. Troy holds most of the cards as we want him off the books. But we hold a card that can block him from playing for Brum in his career. So there's a compromise to be done. Clearly we will have to pay a chunk but there's no reason we have to top him up to 100% of what he'd have earned with us.

What if we get relegated two years running like Wolves and Sunderland did in the last decade? We would still be paying a non player a hefty amount of money.

I think what is usual would be that we pay of a large percentage of his remaining contract and he becomes a free agent.

Despite what anyone likes to think or says, it’s almost unprecedented for a player to walk away from a more lucrative contract just because they want to play more regularly.

We paid Welbeck off and then he went and signed for Brighton on £100k per week.

  18. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Players walk away with their contracts part paid up, not fully paid up. A recognition that they will earn less with new employer but contribute nothing after they end their contract early.
If he stays, we are worse off and he never gets to play for Brum - we both lose - so we compromise.

You certainly could do that, but given that he's due all of it in this year, what's the incentive for him to do that financially? I'm no accountant, but there's not a lot of financial win for him in that. He'd basically be doing it because of an expected offset from up north.

GP sees the books. Neither of us does. So who really knows?

It would be absolute madness to have given him all his money and let him go. I can’t believe we’d have sanctioned that.

Where’s Watford’s incentive? Waive the wages and we benefit financially. Keep the player and we have a goalscorer in the Champ. I reckon we’d have paid a few months worth (still more than the sicknote rat deserved).

Interestingly to back up your point, Willian is giving up his Arsenal contract to sign for Corinthians for 70% less than he would be paid by Arsenal. Seems very generous from Mr Willian but there we go.

Is read that as well, I guess he is already an extremely wealthy man. For every William there is a Rodwell or Ozil, though.

I think they key is whether the player is getting something he wants from the deal that the club could theoretically deny him. Deeney WANTS to go to Brum, Willian WANTS to go to Brazil. If we were just trying to bin Troy off to another champ side I think we would have no bargaining position and would have to top up his new salary to whatever he would have earned with us. He and Brum should have denied any interest before we settled his contract !
