Thanks Will. If it wasn't for your ****ing around, we wouldn't have signed players that are twice as good as you.

Reading this and knowing he only signed a 3 year deal, gives me the impression he didn’t really want to leave in the end. Lots could be assumed, but clearly something happened behind the scenes and too much damage was done. Don’t think he really wanted to join palace, he was left with no choice. A 3 year deal is hardly saying he wants them and they want him. As I said earlier on this forum, he will be sold by the summer of 2023 after 2 years at palace. A very poor career move, wish him all the best.

Edit: The only people he doesn’t thank is Gino and the board.

I am not sure he would have been worth the quoted 60k a week without a relegation clause tbh.

All the best to him. Strange career choices. We should have been the stepping stone to a top club for him. Not the Stripey Nigels.

He 100% thought he was getting a bigger move, it didn't materialise, we then wanted him gone and so he's had to step sideways to Palace with his tail between his legs pretending it's some sort of fantastic career step.

Don't really understand why fans are angry at him, it's his job and he wanted a different feel. Can't blame him for negotiating

Suspect he did. Pretty switched on guy by all accounts. Not your typical footballer upbringing.

Hes not a watford born and bred / bleeds yellow kind of player, so I suspect is looking at signing on fees and one or two moves in the latter part of his playing career. Moving makes sense as he can negotiate his terms and get a signing on fee, wjereas we wanted to tie him in for 5 years with a relegation clause. Palace take a risk on no relegation and dont tie him in for about all of his remaining career. In theory he can do brilliantly at palace and still get a bigger club in for him in 2 years.

I try not to get too attached to modern day players, especially since my court case and this is a good example.
Poorly thought out move whatever the circumstances behind it.

This is a great outcome for us. Hughes is a Tommy Smith like 'too good for the Championship but not Premier league standard' player. Kucka, Sissoko and Tufan are the level above.

In Gino we trust and prosper.

Apologies for forgetting who it was, but somebody earlier on this thread summed it up very neatly in my opinion when they said if Hughes had stayed, most of us would have been happy and been full of praise for his ability, but as he’s now decided to leave its human nature for us to downplay his past contributions and feel we’ve got a better replacement signed up (which we may well have in fairness).

Nothing rarely becomes a player like the manner of their leaving, in the short-term at least. And the whole Hughes departure has been a sorry story from start to finish. It’s been sad to watch.

I will leave the sharper technical analysis to others on here who are more qualified than me to give it, but from my perspective I’ve always enjoyed watching Hughes play for us and his return to the side last season seemed more than coincidence that we then went on our promotion run. So I will miss him, but equally the start of last season reminded us all how unhelpful it is to have players around the club who don’t want to be there. Like with Deeney, a parting of the ways seems/seemed inevitable, and for the best, and we do look stronger in midfield and up top now too, but I hope Hughes eventually gets the thanks he deserves despite the manner of his leaving.

Last season we still had discontented players with us after the window closed, and some squad deficiencies too as we then had to go looking for free agents. This time round it feels more and more as if once September starts, we will have the squad we want to take us forward, shawn of those players we don’t, and those who don’t want us. Fingers crossed at least!

What, one of the highest earners at the club on a five year deal? He's just signed a 3 year deal at Crippled Alice.

    Blimey.

Unless injuries robbed him of pace he may have had in his youth, I'm not sure he'd have ever made it at the top level, but he's definitely a decent Prem player, and can play a number of roles. We seem to have replaced him well though, and I'm not sure he's a gamechanger for Palace!

The thing is, RC, we don’t have any idea what went on behind the scenes in negotiations between Hughes, his agent and the board.

To call him a complete ***** after his performances to help get us promoted is below the belt and, imho, a bit below a man of your intelligence and standing..

The only facts that matter are that we offered him a contract and he's now wearing the ghastly Palace strip.

But he did play ok in a couple of games last season I don't deny it, but the teams we were playing were utter dung, and I cannot remember any matches where he was dominant.

    The complete ***** label stands.
