Isn’t it likely to be salary restructuring in the event of relegation?

If it is, then we’d all understand the club’s POV. Players who want PL wages need to earn it by not getting relegated. But you can also understand the player taking the option to avoid that risk if they can.

Perhaps. But last season showed we bend to the will of players who want out if we get relegated anyway - so not sure how much the clause would affect him as I doubt he'd accept staying with us again in the Championship.

He could just force a move and very likely get it.

There's realistically no difference between a player and member of the coaching staff from a contractual perspective as far as the law is concerned.

I will guarantee you that player's contracts outline what their job role duties are - an agent isn't going to recommend a player sign an open ended contract with no specified duties. No player ends up scrubbing the toilets because they have to do what the head coach stipulates.

Pretty much the worst thing that's going to happen to them is that they'll be not picked and/or training alone. A worst case scenario of getting paid to not have to do your job is a pretty low bar.

From a legal perspective, they're not. If it's just cause for your or I it's just cause for a player too.

Clubs just choose to let a lot more slide because, unlike you and I, players are assets with real world values. You don't fire a 20 million pound player for crapping in someone's shoes - another club would snap him up for free. As a result, players have a lot more leeway on bad conduct, because they know clubs really don't want to fire them.

So, the big question. Which of our forum heroes are going to "rescue" one of Andre or Troy's logs, and put it in SD's shoes ?

  5. Arakel

    Arakel First Team

    Yep.

Relegation release clauses are really the carrot to offer with the stick. The club gets the security of knowing they are financially viable from a salary perspective and the player gets to make a move at a cut price.

I would hate for Hughes to leave, but I can't really blame the guy taking his time to decide as his next contract is probably going to be the most lucrative of his career. He knows we want to keep him so ATM he has our offer in his back pocket, so you can't blame him holding on to see if a better offer comes in.

Having said that, the time is fast approaching to pressure him to sign or reluctantly actively look to move him on if he is not prepared to do so. We must do this sooner rather than later so we can get in a replacement in plenty of time before the season starts.

    Agree with this.

On the flipside, he's (or his agent is) playing a slightly risky game - because if nothing comes along, but we've been forced to move ahead without him, he may find some unexpected competition.

C'mon Will, just sign the paper. Make it a real one please, too, not like that weird photo of the player signing the email from Giarretta and the agent!

I'm hearing that he's signed a four year contract.

It's not clear what the issue was but it seems that £100 worth of free bets on the UFC from Stake.com has sealed the deal.

Hughes is easily replaceable, the likes of Yokunslu, Thorsby, Onana, even Lemina, who we've all been linked with would likely do at least as good a job as him, if not better - plus would cost similar amounts to what we could probably sell him for.

Haven't heard an awful lot about Yokuslu this summer (that's not to say there hasn't been serious interest in him mind). Again, we'd be blown out of the water by certain teams, but he's definitely worth us at least asking about

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are in talks about signing Lemina for £4mil - if true it would surely rule them out from signing Hughes.

Or it just gives us one less option for replacing him when he does go, and sets a new low price comparator ?

I never suggested they would; I was using that example metaphorically to portray a first team player being told to train with the youth team as akin to telling a line supervisor to clean toilets & make the teas. Obviously their contract would be drawn up within the framework of the duties being stipulated as football-related.

The whole point of constructive dismissal as a concept is often just what you have described: 'getting paid to not have to do your job.' It is an attempt to force someone to leave the company by so undermining their position as to render remaining within that company as psychologically and/or emotionally impossible. So, no, it is not a low bar at all.

It's a blow for sure and our midfield is weak even with him in it. If Hughes goes, and it looks certain he will now, we need TWO more additions. If Chalobah and Hughes goes, then we'll need THREE!! This would be Doucoure, Capoue and Hughes gone from our last Premier League midfield. This was by far our strongest aspect, now it has been dismantled.

Replacements since then have been Gosling, Etebo and Louza. That's not like for like in terms of quality, although I think Louza and Etebo will do a good job for us. Gosling looked a Championship player against West Brom and in no way can be considered a starter. Cleverley is another good pro, but is only a squad player these days even though he had a great season in a level below. Question marks over their fitness in terms of being able to play a full season as well. TDB will be an excellent player for us I'm sure, but he's not there in the here and now. He's one for the future and needs to test his knee. Quina, is not really a central midfielder. He's a quality player, but more in the advanced areas.

Chalobah could bridge the gap, but he needs to continue the improvement of last season. He's also considering his options so we cannot really consider him right now.

We're going to have to spend some money in this area. I think if we get in a couple of quality midfielders, then I think Watford will have a very good season. If we sell Hughes and only bring in one player, who is largely average, then we'll struggle. Getting the midfield right is so important. It's absolutely key in terms of staying up or not.

It will be a huge opportunity missed if we get all these exciting forward players, yet ignore blatant limitations in midfield.

Losing Hughes and Chalobah isn’t as troubling as some may think.

Both players were backup at best to Doucoure and Capoue. The point at which both the latter left the club was the moment our midfield was ****ed.

Hughes and Chalobah are a pair of fairly strong Championship midfielders but average at best in the Prem.

In essence, our midfield is not good enough, with or without these two.

We need a Behrami and a Capoue and then as HB says I think we have a decent squad .

Reading between the lines it seems Louza might take some time to get to the point where he is considered a starting option in the Prem

I agree, my “Behrami” choice would be Yokuslu who we were linked with yesterday, knowing that be wouldn’t break the bank and did well for West Brom.

I would love Zambo Anguissa as a “Capoue” type player, although he’d be out of our price range.

If we did get these two or players similar, I think our midfield would be so much better with or without Hughes or Chalobah.

Even with those two starting regularly, I'm not sure if it's a strong enough midfield to stay up, but we're not going to be able to sign two midfielders as good as them this summer are we? Is Yokuslu as good as Hughes on the ball? Is Thorsby as good as either of them? Is it likely we get either of those two?

Hughes definitely wants to leave (I suspect what will happen with the apparent lack of interest at the moment is that he'll leave in a relatively cheap deal some time close to the deadline), although in fairness, there doesn't seem to be any indication that Chalobah is angling for a move away

  34. Can't blame him for wanting to go. If the only chant we cold come up with was "Hughes-y", we don't deserve him.

1 year left, asking to go and not exactly a bidding war - we’ll be lucky to get £5m I reckon. Which is criminal as he’s worth 3x that.
