Or Sierralta is fine - but WTE is a calamity still in possession. Or simply one (god forbid not both!) gets injured.

We have been here before and Mariappa played a huge amount of games in the relegation season because we didn’t do anything about it.

As I’ve said, pin the 2 CM’s down to new deals and spend whatever we have (and can possibly raise from obvious outgoings) on a good centre back.

Genuinely believe any hopes we have of surviving rest on the above.

Yep Burnsy is spot on - it's mental to even consider having to give Kabasele or Cathcart proper minutes in the top flight. Even WTE will probably be an absolute calamity, his distribution terrifies me.

Given the fees teams will pay for CB's these days it really confuses me we won't make the effort to develop or sign any.

I think they signed WTE to be a Prem standard CB should we have got promoted, and while he hasn't been bad, he hasn't hit those heights. He's probably slightly better than the Cathcart and Kabasele of 2 years ago, albeit marginally, but that, and the fact that Sierrelta has turned out to be a revelation, probably means we won't sign any new defenders

Not trying to be confrontational at all and I recognise you even said 'probably', but personally I don't think we've even seen any evidence from which we can draw that conclusion up to this point. For one reason or another (primarily insanely, inexplicably poor distribution/choices) he didn't individually greatly distinguish himself in the Champ, let alone playing a minute in the Prem, and we're yet to see what that will do to said distribution, alongside aerial averageness/weakness, not at all impressive one-on-one skills, and anything else on-pitch that isn't 'leadership'. He frightens the **** out of me starting games at top level.

If we can tell him to hoof it away as far as possible any time he's under pressure, he won't go far wrong. Aerially, he's a bit of a worry, but that won't make up such a high proportion of Premier League teams' armoury as it was in the Championship. I think he'll be meh in the Prem, like Cathcart and Kabasele were, but Sierralta will be good so I'm not overly worried about the defence. Midfield is looking light though

I agree about midfield, as it stands (however that actually is ). The problem with this, though, is that we could have done that at any point he was playing for us all last season, and never did. Or, indeed, if we did, he was literally incapable of following it. Either through instruction or intransigence (almost certainly instruction), he was incapable of not trying to play the ball (and by extension regularly making hideous errors doing so). With that in mind, what is the likelihood that we will either choose to tell him to change that entirely, or find a way to get through to him, now?

That's not to mention the discomfort the idea of intentionally going into a Prem season with a centre back for whom the best case scenario we could envisage is, if we're really lucky and focused, getting him to just bang the ball vaguely back up the pitch somewhere and cede possession against several of the best attacks in world football, every single time. We had enough defensive pinball as it was last time we were up here, and the total lack of control it afforded us helped get us relegated (that, and a million other things, of course).

I have to say I have not been overly impressed with the quality of our new recruits so far, but hopefully I will be proven wrong, and I'm equally unimpressed of our ability to off load our vast amounts of deadwood as yet.

My one big hope is that we might yet bring in a quality striker!!!

However I'm not expecting that striker to be a permanent signing as I very much doubt we could afford to buy one, but there are quite a few decent strikers knocking around the PL that get very little playing time at their parent clubs, therefore I'm hoping we could tempt one or two of them to come and showcase themselves with us at Watford. Then hopefully if we manage to stay up and one or both of those loan players have great seasons with us we might possibly be able to afford to make at least one of them a permanent WFC player.

I’d say you can let go of this hope. Not sure what strikers you’re alluding to? Who could we get who is affordable even on loan and better than what we have?

And I really doubt we will be signing another striker, let alone 2. We have tonnes of them as it is.

Loads of plates spinning, and new CEO heavily involved. Wouldn’t panic, as the market is dead at the moment. Valuation on Flemming is an issue and waiting on Watford to sign an attacking player to free up Zinckernagel

Would seem like another attacking signing is on route, or at least, desired.

What I did find odd (unless he’s injured) was that looking at his social media, Zinckernagel was in Bath this weekend sightseeing whilst the team played friendlies.

I wonder if we signed Zinckernagel on the understanding that Sarr would be off? Hard to see a route to regular football (AFCON aside) for him at RW, though he might get more of a chance as an attacking midfielder, presume if we do sign another attacker, it'll be a right-winger who can fill in while Sarr and possibly Dennis are away (or at the very least cover for Cucho)

Fair. But he definitely posted a lot in footage on Instagram over the weekend of him and his partner in Bath so easy to have made the assumption!

Plus I don’t watch the Foster things anymore, his constant blurting of ‘legend’ and ‘thing of beauty’ is intolerable.

I do feel bad for the players who find themselves in Zinckernagel's situation. Yes they're well paid and we shouldn't feel bad for them blah blah blah, but he was clearly sold on the idea of playing in the Premier League for us. We all know he'll now be sent out on loan a couple of times if we manage to stay up and then end up at Udinese.

    And yet, he shouldn’t be.

People have concerns over him which I understand - but he’s not had a fair go of things yet and given the number of assists he got in just a few months, it seems mad to even be contemplating one of the more creative players we have.

If we let him go, and bring in a player like bloody Longstaff, I really really question the direction we are going in with the makeup of this squad.

Yep. He's only had a short time here playing in an unfamiliar position and he still managed to create chances for us. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think he ranked highest for xA per 90 mins for us last season? I'm not saying start the guy next season but surely he's an excellent squad option.

Bit odd if Zinckernagel isn’t given a chance but Munoz and the coaching staff do get to run the rule over him in training and are well-placed to make these kinds of judgments.

We have been linked with a number of LW in recent weeks - Boupendza and Lookman come to mind - and obviously that wouldn’t happen without Zinckernagel and/or Sema leaving, particularly as Cucho, Pedro and Dennis are wing options.

A bit random, and maybe not good enough, but Jed Wallace has been superb for Millwall the last couple of years. Excellent set piece taker and really carries that Millwall side. Only 1 year left on his contract. Anyone think he’d be a decent option? He has played predominantly on the right throughout his career but if we want a right footed winger to cut inside on that left hand side then that wouldn’t be an issue.

Maybe we're still looking for a genuine out and out LW so we can play Dennis/Cucho on the right when need be? I don't know, but it does sound like Zinckernagel isn't in our plans

  24. LeedsOrn

Of course but he’s not going to get in the side at all as a RW when Sarr is fit, is he? And I don’t know if he’s physical enough to be transformed in earnest into one of the 8s.

If he were to leave to make way for a new attacker, as reported by John Percy yesterday, what position do you think the new attacker would be?

  25. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

But if Sarr gets injured? We need depth. I’m not massively at odds with the point you’re making but I just don’t think it’s obvious that PZ or Sema would have to leave for a LW to come in. Even more so as it’s not nailed on that Joao Pedro or Cucho will even be thought of as options there. I think they will be seen as central options predominantly.

    And a No.10 I imagine.

  26. LeedsOrn

    LeedsOrn Reservist

Obviously Xisco hasn’t really employed a 10, preferring the two 8s. I doubt that changes. Also, King, Cucho and Pedro can play as a more withdrawn striker too potentially covering the 10 role too if need be.

My LW comment is based on that being the position in our system we most need an upgraded starter and the fact that a lot of players seemingly for that role have been linked.

Would have love the club to have signed Lookman. However, we've gone for Dennis. A cheaper, potentially problematic personality, but has pace to burn. I can't see the club signing anyone else for the left side. The right is a different story though. Do we really have a viable option if Sarr gets injured? He'll certainly be playing for Senegal in the AFCON this season, so we do need someone of quality to fill in when that happens. Maybe we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, in terms of loaning Geri in January, for example, to cover the loss of Sarr. We've got Hungbo who I rate, and there's the possibility of switching Dennis from left to right wing, or using Baar or Zinckernagel.

In fact Zinckernagel is supposed to be a right winger. I think he has great technical ability, but does he really have the pace? Not when you place him against Sarr, Dennis or Baah. I'd like PZ to be given a chance, but for me he's a bit of an enigma. Not sure where he really fits in a 4-3-3.

Think Cucho will be our left side starter if he stays. Works very hard for the team, adept at carrying the ball forward from deep and protecting it, not clinical enough to be our starting forward.

I've not once seen him play, apart from YouTube clips. But we desperately need someone pushing King Ken. King is more than capable there but I want to see him playing centrally.

Most assists last season in half the time the rest of the squad had. That's not a bad 'showing' really. Whether people think he does enough or not, he's clearly creative.

None of his assists seemed particularly great though from what I recall, they mostly seemed simple short passes from a player positioned close to the forwards. Sure, a lesser player can still screw up a simple pass, but they were still things one would expect a good Champ player to be capable of. Aside from what I thought seemed fairly straight-forward assists all the rest of his game seemed sub-par and called in to question whether the team could afford to carry him.

The games he played were also ones where in general the rest of the team was already flying, which no doubt made it easier for him.
