Could We Sign A ‘proven Prem Goalscorer’?

Yeah - we absolutely need a back up left back. I just think it is probably a position we can fill fairly cheaply.

The two mooted so far are Doig (circa £4m fee being discussed) or Ashley Young (circa £2m wages being discussed) would obviously eat into any transfer budget but Doig has a potential contribution / profit in the future and I think Young improves our starting 11 now.

I am sure there back up options available who are even cheaper than those two who are an improvement on Lazaar - it is a fairly low threshold to hit.

But we didn’t we shift him back out on some sort of loan within a loan deal?

    Just think of the £££.

This season we need players who can hit the ground running to improve our team straight away and as long as we stay up even in 17th spot that is what our target for this coming should be.

The transfer window doesn't open for two weeks, so they have literally had to be - I'm not sure we can take anything at all in conclusion from what has happened up to this point.

Agreed but you can still do deals outside of transfer windows, like we have with Baah and Pollock.

I take it as a positive. Snapped us three promising young players that plenty of Premier clubs have looked at.

Yes, ageed too, but I do think that we probably have to recognise it's a bit of a different scenario in that major/first team players that we want and are going to improve us just aren't going to be having early deals sewn up and pre-announced, unless they're on a free - they'll want both to get the best deal for themselves, probably via tortuous negotiation, and to potentially keep their options open to some possible degree.

I'm very uninterested in random promising and child deals, to be sure, but really I have to tell myself it's just that we're not genuinely in the active part of the window yet, in a way in which real signings are going to be announced.

So based only on my criteria (others may determine it differently) we DID sign a ‘proven premier league striker’ after all. Of course that’s no guarantee of success …. We signed another one last season in the shape of Murray!

Indeed! And his stats on the first page look pretty good as well. Hopefully he hasn't lost whatever it is he had!

    We'll see.

So long as he's not another Gray, having a couple of hot streaks and not much else.

Always struck me as a decent if not spectacular player. If he's still quick that'd be a great start.

I appreciate very different circumstances but King on a free against Wood at £25M looks very good business seeing how they have quite similar goal scoring records in the Premier League.

@reids any chance of one of those comparison wheels for them both this season?

We got the guy from Belgium - Glad he turned out ok. Chances are that Chris Wood isn't going to loft Newcastle enough.

We've been a more attacking team than Burnley but still this is nice reading. Cheers Reids

King is statistically our 2nd best player this season

Certainly a strong comparison point. Newcastle are far richer than us now, and almost inarguably should be a bigger draw for players, so if they're having to outlay 25m plus to get Wood it really puts the King signing in a good light.

The Wood signing is just a compete anomaly given Newcastle’s unique circumstances. King has been a good signing, but what Newcastle paid for Wood is completely irrelevant to it. I don’t see how it makes us signing King any better or worse than it is, they’re worth £300 billion pounds, but for one season and one season only the richest club in world football (by some distance) just happen to also be in the relegation zone, one way or another that isn’t going to happen again.

And, of course, their star centre forward (who is very good/effective) is out injured in the short-medium term, so they are having to knee-jerk compensate for that. In terms of draw and recruitment and all that, as you say, it tells us absolutely nothing.

Newcastle should have got a much better player for £25m, smacks of desperation to me, all that money and they can only get Chris Wood hahaha, I would have offered us £40m for Dennis if I was them, Gino would have ripped their arm off at that deal. I have no doubt Newcastle will be a major force in years to come but seeing it go to sh1t at the moment is most enjoyable.

Wood was instantly available, no transfer fee negotation and no salary negotiation as they could offer him a lot more than Burnley could afford. If they can get someone better this window then they can cut their losses on Wood.

He's not worth £25m on the open market, but for Newcastle it's equivalent to buying him for a set of training kits and a couple of goal nets.

They have some ridiculous offers in for some top notch players. Land a couple of those and they will quickly pull clear, Wood will be on the bench.

Provided he's not the only striker they bring in, Wood is a very sensible addition. If they stay up, he'll probably be their 3rd/4th choice striker next season which is pretty good strength in depth for an upwardly mobile but not yet top six club. If they go down, he'll stay with them and be a really strong option in the Championship rather than being someone looking to jump ship because of career ambitions/needing to play at top level for international career.

People need to ignore the price Newcastle pay for players, any sort of satisfaction from price comparisons, or trying to use it to asses the value of our own signings (or any other club for that matter). It is utterly pointless and futile, they literally have limitless cash. I was watching that Dubai programme on BBC the other day, a bloke spent £9m on a private number plate (the car it was on was only worth £800k) I could laugh at him for wasting his money on a number plate that cost 10x the car it is on, but he’s a multi-billionaire who can afford it, so who is the one really doing the laughing?
