Looks like the worst affected products are going to be chilled processed meats - the gammon won't be happy!

 

There are similar problems over here. Part of it is down to a slew of early retirements due to covid; a lot of drivers have retired, and younger people over here don't see driving as career worth pursuing so that's an enormous dearth of drivers.

Couple that with covid outbreaks at things like meat packaging facilities and you have all kinds of problems.

It is having enormous impact on the quality of food, too. For example, I bought some fresh basil the other day for a recipe, and overnight the leaves started rotting (dark green, mushy etc). Meat quality is poor compared to pre-covid as well.

I think these problems are going to persist for a while; of course, the UK's issues will be exacerbated by Brexit.

 

Rubbish! We will soon be tucking in to delicious Australian lamb and the finest cuts of succulent Australian beef - all at rock bottom prices.

 

Plus some good old American chicken that tastes and smells of swimming pools.

I think I’ve had two maybe three occasions this year when I’ve not been able to get a bag of salad leaves.

I just just curled up into a ball on the floor of Sainsbury’s and quietly soiled myself.

 

A window sill planter can provide fresh herbs and salad all year round

 

Seriously, the sell by dates on a lot of produce have got a lot closer, and I'm finding more dodgy fruit and veg (mouldy/going off after a day). There are also days when there are none of a particular item (aubergines yesterday).

 

I would be happy to go without liver, okra and cauliflower cheese.

 

I'm going to avoid sprouts and cabbage for the next month to ease this crisis. Every little helps.

Yes the panic buying of aubergines is starting to get out of hand. What's more, there's no adequate substitute (unlike the newspaper option in the great toilet roll shortage of 2020).

 

I’d eat that. Cheese and liver might take some getting used to but I could probably bridge the tastes with a bit of mustard.

I’m pretty much vegan so can happily do without most of the crap we’re likely to be short of.

Yes but you need quite wide windowsills to cope with the crop of iceberg lettuces.

Dependant on your love of the black stuff to taste. It can overpower the meal if you use too much.

Seriously though, I am de facto unemployed by the coronavirus, and my wife is conversely working all hours.* And I can assure you, without any brexit bias (honestly), prices have gone up a lot and quality/choice/availability of produce has gone down (a lot).

* In some ways a good thing as I get to choose what to buy and we never run out of beer or wine these days.

 

Iceberg lettuces are like eating crunchy water.

 

Yes hence the name. Icebergs are really crunchy.

 

Prices are definitely up. First time in my adult life I think I've noticed it in this way. The weekly family Lidl shop has gone up about £15pw on average in the last 18 months and we're really not buying anything different.
