I'd have liked to have him in the summer when Hughes was injured and Capoue looked like being off, but once Hughes came back, Chalobah returned to form, and Gosling and Sanchez arrived to play their supporting roles to a tee, it turned out we had no need for him
I've seen Swansea loads over the last two seasons. He never stood out ever. Rodon did and he got a big move. I just see a bang average midfielder.
Would be a decent squad option in my opinion. Still only 25. Final year of his contract. Prem next season having Hughes, Chalobah, Danilo (if we sign him), Grimes, Clevs and Gosling would give us a very hard working CM who will give their all for 90mins. Basically being a Burnley.
He wasn’t up to much today, and he would be behind Hughes and Chalobah. Maybe on a par with Gosling and Cleverley.
Fair enough. But I would want a lot alot better than Grimes. As for adding to the squad he'd be one hell of an expensive squad player.
Crying at the end of the game, no doubt emotional that he can finally seal the deal and become a hornet.
Would not have an issue with signing him and we'd probably have a very good chance of getting him if we wanted to. Not sure he'd be an upgrade though. More of the same, although he would likely play more often than Cleverley or Gosling.
It would be another nice cash windfall for Exeter City too, on top of the very decent one they received last year for Watkins.
Haha. I live not far from Exeter when I’m in the UK, so I know a lot of City fans and they were quite excited when they thought we were signing him last summer as they had a good sell-on clause. So I just thought I’d mention it. Sorry if I went off on a tangent.
**** Walsall being pissed off, I think you'll find most Hornet fans were even more pissed off that they were
How is he expensive? He’s in his final year. We offered Swansea £8mil when they rejected it. Now with one year left, he’s free in 6 months. Swansea will want something for him. Sure they might want £10mil but no-one is paying that. He will leave Swansea for around £5mil. The chance to play Prem football, he’s a decent CM, 25, probably only on £15-20k p/w at Swansea. If we go down he would help us get back up. Based on what the club are saying about the type of player they want to sign, Grimes fits the bill.
Look I get that you rate him I don't, purely a difference of opinion. Firstly I had no idea he was in the final year so he could be of reasonable value. Still don't rate him and never have.
Wasn’t having a pop mate. So apologies if it came across that way. Just was saying he’s not expensive. For a player that’s only 25, has very good numbers for a championship midfielder, we would struggle to find someone of his ability for cheaper or around the same price. I’m not saying he’s a starter, but as an option off the bench/cup games/filling in when we have injuries, he would be a decent signing. I get you don’t feel that way. I just don’t know who else we could get within that price range that knows how the English game works as opposed to a player from the outside that always needs 3 months to adapt.
No worries I didn't take it like that. We all view players differently and maybe he would be a perfect option. It wouldn't be the first time I've made the wrong opinion on a player.
Grimes as a backup to Hughes makes sense. Not sure he'd sign to play that part but may well want a shot at the Prem
With what we expect our budget to be this summer, £5m is quite a lot for a player who doesn't immediately improve the starting 11.
Absolutely not the sort of player we should be signing. We've got quite enough journeyman English players thank you.
Agree that we should avoid this one. Maybe as a last resort if we can't get better. We need at least one CM that is an improvement on what we have. Grimes ain't the answer.
They lost out on a payment that was probably worth equal to or more than their entire club, so I'm guessing they were pretty irritated.
Agreed. Though 48 hrs from the deadline we will happily pick up his sorry ar5e to add to the signings of Baah, the fish guy, and Fletcher.
I'd have been happy with Grimes at the start of last season to help us get promoted. He's probably one on the better CMs in the Championship. However, now we're up I think we should be aiming higher. He's be okay as a backup squad player, but we've already got enough of those.
Some chatter that he's available for about £1.5m having run his contract down to one year. Maybe we could finally finish the medical we supposedly started ten months ago. https://twitter.com/SportsPeteO/status/1420349938068754433?s=20
