Aguero misses good chances too. But like Luther he's always getting into dangerous areas and scores a lot..

Abraham would amazing. I like Josh King a lot. We'll dream of quality and get some kind of Okaka/Oulare combination......

King certainly used to look very handy but coming off the back of two very poor seasons. Gone from possible move to Man U to relegation and struggling to get minutes in a pretty ordinary everton side.

Also not sure he is really the lone striker we need. Is he not more of a shadow striker type which doesnt really fit into our current formation.

Abraham would be incredible but cant see it happening in a month of sundays. He will have offers from nearly every club in the division, including the clubs in europe, if he is on the market.

I don't think you'd see Luther try a ludicrous penalty like Aguero the other day!

Surely if Chelsea are letting this happen we should be all over it.

Personally I'd rather take this and pay the loan fee whatever it is than waste our time looking at dross from the Danish league or Diagne.

Yes it's still a gamble but he's got to be one of the better options out there that is within our budget. Martinez still rates him otherwise he wouldn't of wasted a spot in the Euro squad.

Fingers crossed it's going under the radar like Fletcher did and we can pull off a deal.

Loan with first option to buy would be a great deal for us.

History of getting goals but more realistic than Abraham by far.

Potential and talent but not really fulfilled it is the kind of pool to fish in.

Would he want to come here though?

Article says his contract is up at Chelsea next summer...

  8. Carpster

Well he went to Palace twice so I'd like to think so.

But for any chance of getting him we would have to shift Deeney and Gray. That would cover the loan fee and wages for the year I'd hope.

It is up next Summer but if Chelsea are willing to do that type of deal with another club why not us?

To be honest it seems like nonsense from Turkey where someone forgot to check when his contract expired before putting out the rumour. I can't say I've ever heard of that arrangement before.

Because the other thread got locked unnecessarily, the discussion might as well continue here.

If you know what standards you personally expect then it should be simple to name at least one or two players who would meet those standards.

If you can name those minimum criteria then, again, it should be very straight-forward to identify some players who meet it.

All @NathWFC is doing is giving himself carte blanche to moan repeatedly at whoever we're linked with or sign, as whatever the outcome he can just lazily claim that there should have been someone better we could have signed, when in reality that might not have been the case.

I agree to some extent with your point about "Without knowing our exact budget it’s also very difficult to give decent suggestions", though there have been plenty of posters that have made suggestions on here across multiple potential budgets.

The issue though with your point is that in the case that "If a crap signing is made we’ll call it a crap signing" there are occasions when it could be said to be unfair, when for all we know the club couldn't afford to sign anyone better, or other players they'd tried to sign ended up signing for other clubs. This is another one of the reasons why just constantly having meltdowns about who the club is linked with or ends up signing, without giving ideas as to what could be done instead, is so lazy, petulant and short-sighted.

It didn't get locked unnecessarily - it was a pointless thread suggesting (by the title) we were linked to a player that we weren't.

Me neither. But it's an odd situation we find ourselves in. I've been reading that some clubs are willing just to pay up contracts to get players out thus freeing up space and wages. Added to this Chelsea by all accounts are going to go big on a forward leaving Bats even further down the order.
West Ham sound like they will do the same with Anderson who was excellent at Lazio and his first season at The Hammers. Maybe their faces just dont fit with the new managers and they want them out.

I did add 'Rubbish' as the tag - what else is it there for? It had created a reasonable discussion though which still seemed ongoing.

Also it hopefully had the effect of stopping other people clogging up the forum with posts suggesting him as a signing.

Very true, but I'm sure other clubs would be wanting him as well.

It's for a rumour from an source that seems to be unreliable (we get some Twitter rumours posted here with 1,000 followers).

Part of the issue is some of the criteria can't be figured out by looking at WyScout or Whoscored or wherever. I'm not even sure it's possible to research candidates up front as some are only evident after the deal is announced.

Things like 'do the fans of their current club like them?', 'are they a good fit for our club's ethos?', 'is there any genuine competition for their signing' are all things I'd probably be looking for as examples of that.

Too often we get linked with/sign players where the fans of their current club are amazed we've signed them, there's a history of bad attitude and/or we seem to have beaten off competition from no one to sign them.

It'd be nice to more often get into an auction for a widely-coveted player at any price range and actually see off similar-sized clubs (here or abroad) to sign them. Sarr is probably an example of that type of player, though arguably our obsession with chasing him all summer negatively affected the other business we did. Will Hughes possibly another example of a widely admired (rightly or wrongly) player that we signed.

I get most of the criteria I've mentioned are rooted in emotion rather than detailed analytical examination of a player's statistics.... but then football's an emotional game.

I think you might be disappointed. So far our signings have been a free transfer and what I'm assuming is another freebie from Udinese. I'm not including Baah because it's unlikely that he's for the first team squad. I wouldn't be surprised if any 'big' signings are loans with options to buy, then a couple of signings like Doig, Ugbo etc for a few million each.

It could also be that they believe that most of the squad is in a reasonable state and so are focusing their expenditure on a striker / goalscoring left winger.

Even if our budget is £15-20m I would suggest the overwhelming majority should be spent on one quality player in that position and the rest can be filled up with loans, udinese dross and cheap gambles.

Spending £7-8m on two new full back/midfielder/defenders etc who are a marginal improvement on Kiko/Masina/Chalobah/WTE will not keep us up.

Spending £15-20m on a forward capable of 10 goals from open play might.

I think we have money to spend. Likely raised by leveraging more debt against the club or borrowing against next seasons revenue streams...

What I don't think we will have is money to waste on useless tat just to find out in January that we still need to plug holes with quality.

I don't think we can read too much in to what our signings have been so far - basically no big business has been done yet across the major leagues. Some leagues and cup competitions haven't even fully finished yet (eg relegation and promotion playoffs, Europa League etc.).

Many clubs will have been waiting for such things to become more clear before making more determined moves in the market.

The Euros will also be having a major effect, with I'm sure quite a lot of players involved wanting to wait until they're over before considering a move.

These things all mean it could still be quite a while before the dominos of the bigger money signings start falling.

This is what we spent money on first time around (this is summer window only), probably won’t be much different:

Goalkeeper. He was on the bench (or at least in the travelling squad, but maybe as just a standby) for the opening day while someone was injured. The loan ended while the summer transfer window was still open I think.

    That really is depressing.

Nearly £30m there spent on attacking players - none of them had any impact on our season.

Followed it up in January with Amrabat and Penaranda for circa £15m

Pozzo really knows what he is doing when it comes to forwards.

£28k for every minute he played - and that doesnt even include the wages.

Maybe they were right bout these loan fees all along and Pozzo is actually making a killing.

So long as we also get a backup defender who's better than Navarro and Lazaar. Combined.
