Pozzo incapable of learning from his mistakes.

You need players like cleverly to create a good culture in the dressing room. I’m fine with this and he can stay until he retires and joins the coaching staff in my book.

Has Gino arranged for the fans on this forum to pay a % of Cleverley's contract or something? Who cares?

He's not exactly going to be on £100k like Deeney, so not sure what the big deal is. As said above, it's important to have characters like him in the squad.

I care because in 2 years back in the championship we may not be able to free up wages to develop the squad because of the long contracts we have recently given Cleverly, Sema and Fletcher.

Admittedly on a bigger scale but our inability to ditch Deeney and Gray last summer really reduced our flexibility to bring people in. And both players contribution was fairly woeful. I don’t like to see us making the same mistakes even if on a smaller scale.

We have a finite budget. That’s why people care.

But we already have a character like him in the squad and under contract for 2 years?

And it'll still be important 3 years from now

Will it be important 10 years from now? Why not give him a ten year deal?

So I'm sure in 18 months this wonderful character will happily to sit down and negotiate new terms? What's the rush?

Yes but the three players you've mentioned will be assets in the Championship. The problem is Deeney and Gray contribute the square root of **** all usually. Nobody would care about Deeney and Gray clogging up the wage bill if they scored 40 goals between them.

I disagree. It’s not certain Cleverly would be an asset in championship at the age of 34. And it’s certainly not certain Fletcher would either given his output at Sunderland/Middlesboro. They maybe assets of course. But the point is, as usual, we have taken away our flexibility to adapt. All self inflicted.

Pozzo seems to have an irrational fear of losing players for free and it leads to a succession of poor contract decisions. From Prodl, Cathcart, Deeney, Success and Janmaat to more recent Sema, Fletcher and Cleverly.

Meanwhile genuine saleable asset Will Hughes has a year left.

Last time we got promoted pozzo ruthlessly axed all the dead wood. This time he's giving them 5 year contracts.

Thank god I've got this username to comfort me.

Of course, a 34 year old Tom Cleverley is the same as a 44 year old Tom Cleverley. Yes, very good

Both will be pretty ineffective in a team hoping to be in the Premier League though.

In your opinion. Maybe his ability will fall off a cliff, maybe he'll discover a new role, maybe he'll get a career ending injury. Maybe we'll be competing for top 6 and he won't make the squad/will get sold, maybe we'll be mid table in the Championship and he'll be a key player. Who knows?

Can't imagine being arsed over it either way tbh, especially as he's not on Deeney-level wages, but each to their own.

Cleverley was one of our better players in the season gone so credit where credit is due. However, I do not believe he is PL quality.

I don't mind how the club do it, but sufficient players not up to PL level will be required to be replaced with ones that are to ensure our survival in the PL next season.

Is it too early to start thinking about doing his coaching badges here? Surely won't be a key part of the team next season, and no guarantee that he'd be any good two years on in the Championship if we go down

Yeah but you also predicted that Suarez and Estupinan would play for us last season and that anyone who suggested otherwise was an idiot, so hey ho.

We won’t be able to change the squad sufficiently to “ensure our survival in the PL next season”.
We certainly need to add 3-4 quality first team players to stand a decent chance of survival but not sure whether that will be possible in an environment where our opponents will also be strengthening and with bigger budgets and greater certainty of future PL football on offer.

They weren't good enough to keep us up either.

The 'little Watford' mentality is hard to shake indeed.

Here's an idea, why not sign a player who gives his all and is also good enough to play in the Premier league? Radical I know.

I love Tom, and until recently I have been all for him being a shoe in for our 1st team next season. However, I am fearing that his recent spate of injuries mean that his body might not be up to the rigours of the PL.

Having said that I still think he would be a great asset to the squad mainly from the bench and as a stand in for injured regular 1st team players.

Certainly not the player we all wanted to see today, but in fairness to Xisco, he was the kind of player who worked well for us in games like this last season, and so it panned out today

Has to start every game I think, brings energy to the team. Obviously not the most skillful player etc but brings the right attitude and links the play up well.

Proving the doubters wrong again, and certainly has a part to play this season. His energy and pressing is second to none in the squad and his attitude transmits to his teammates
