New European Super League

At the end of MNF last night, they showed Klopp's post game press conference where he said he wouldn't resign as his job is to 'manage football matches and look after the team'. He then acknowledged fans weren't happy and that he would need to have discussions about the plans - and 'do something' about the relationship between fans and club.

Gary Neville then commented that 'do something' could 'only' mean try and stop the plans going ahead.

They really believe the club would walk out on billions of revenue over the next 23 years (minimum) to placate Jurgen Klopp and that's all it will take. If this is the basis of the 'mutiny' they are stoking the fires of, its a week blueprint off the bat.

To be fair, the proposals for a revamped CL are only slightly less disgusting than this abomination.

We need Snake Pliskin to blow Football back 30 years because whatever the outcome of this, unless it's a clean break and a 'big six' free premier league with a 'big 15' free European competition under a fairer, meritocratic basis, then they might as well just let it all go ahead as the robber baron owners wish.

I'm not sure of the stats, but how often has the CL been won by a non league champion who isn't even challenging for the title in their domestic league that season either?

So the 'best team in europe' is frequently not even the best or second best side in their own league.

    I think you're right.

Which is why i favour a clean break. For football for the millions who don't support one of these traitor sides to have any meaning at all, it must be completely separate. A league pyramid with a fixed top 6 and no reward whatsoever for occasionally breaking their monopoly is meaningless.

I'd rather a league with slightly reduced value than having to play a side who don't care about the league but have already won all the prizes before a ball is kicked.

It's the aggressive nature of the break that poses the biggest danger to the likes of Watford. If this cabal of clubs with big egos had given notice of their intention to jump ship by, say, 2030, that would give everyone else a chance to get their house in order first. Contracts would wind down, no doubt the nature of the tv deal and sponsorships would change and I imagine the likes of Pozzo would lose interest in owning a Watford once it's clear the PL would not longer deliver the £££ it once did. In essence there would be an opportunity to manage the transition. Obviously I'd expect nothing less than a whole bunch of feckless clubs/owners to go to the wall as they try to ignore reality, but there would at least be a lifeboat for the sensible.

Instead, they're basically committing a robbery. Running off with the loot with only a promise that they might have so much cash in their swag bags that some might fall out (aka trickle down) and we should be glad of the opportunity to fight amongst ourselves over their leftovers. Even the most prudent clubs will suffer.

To be fair, the sad old geezer has a point. Football is boring, mostly. When all you care about is your own team, there's very little interest in any other games.

Personally, I've watched the odd Swansea and Brentford game in the last few months. I watched my first Premier League game of the season when I was at the pub on Sunday and was sat in front of a screen. Beyond our games, it's of no real interest to me, even more so without fans present.

But that's what the game has been turned into, which is exactly what Perez and the stiff-6 over here have wanted. Burnley vs Fulham is mocked as a game nobody wants to watch because the league only exist ls for those w*nky teams at the top to rack up points and TV coverage. 14 teams who's purpose to be smacked around by the big boys.

Of course, you'll get the odd football purist who claims that watching those teams play each other is like finding the Ark Of The Covenant and the Cup Of A Carpenter/Holy Grail, but these people are either journalists or weirdos.

When the 'magic of the FA Cup' all depends on who Man Utd's Reserves are playing, can the likes of Neville be shocked and dismayed that they actually now believe they are the only draw to the game in this country?

And don't give me this 'I feel sorry for their fans' b*llocks either. Winning leagues and cups is just another game for this tossers. They've loved every minute of their dominance based on lies and dodgy money agreeing with every decision they've made.

Like Neville, Carragher and the rest, the fans helped make the bed. Now lie in it.

Do you think the Pozzos will lose interest? Yes there will be less money involved, but that will be relative across the board and a lot worse in the case of Udinese than Watford if we were a PL club. I guess there would still be money to be made buying and developing players to sell into the ESL, so there would still be opportunity for them, just not as much directly from the TV revenue.

I honestly wouldn’t have a clue if they’d lose interest or not, just hypothesising and I guess it comes down to how much they’re in it just for cash and how much they enjoy actually running a football club.

I would have thought foreign owners who are in primarily for the dosh and prestige would be the first to flee. Whether that includes Pozzo I'm not sure. I think it more like than not it would.

  14. I would have thought the remaining PL clubs could recover much of the loss through selling directly to Netflix or Amazon rather than discounted to a wholesale TV company as currently done. A much smaller market but much greater margin.

Key will be how the PL markets itself, it needs to be a really aggressive campaign focussing on what has always made English football so entertaining. It must be gloves off and go to war with this super league.

Spurs last won a trophy (the League Cup) 13 years ago. Super League my ar5e. As far as I'm concerned the two Manchester clubs can f... off, Arsenal and Tottenham can f... off, and Liverpool can definitely f... off because no-one likes Scousers. I have a soft spot for Chelsea and wish them luck in their new venture

The elephant in the room here is the amount of debt many of these clubs (themselves) are in. Ive heard a billion for one. Arsenal certainly are in a lot of debt.
They need JPMorgan to lend them the money and oversees views just to keep their whole rotten houses together in many cases.
I suspect this is the real reason behind this

    Good point made on Twitter:

The best route back from here for the English clubs is to sit back and let Florentino Perez do the talking - he’s saying so much mental stuff that they can then say ‘this isn’t what was agreed or what we signed up to’ and attempt to distance themselves.

You can tell they feel threatened by it because the output of their pundits has been so unfiltered.

It is of course a bit ******* rich, given that they’ve inflated the bubble, monopolised TV rights in this country and put almost all of the live football behind a pay wall for years. Still enjoying Gary Neville going to town on the culprits though, very entertaining.

It wouldn't surprise me if this all fell apart as quickly as it was announced.

Reading between the lines, the Spanish and Italian clubs need this league. They have big financial issues. The English clubs DON'T need it. They want to be part of it as they don't want to be left behind, but I can't help feel they are being used. Yes, they want more money, because they are greedy c***s, but apart from that I'm not too sure how committed all the clubs are.

I think Chelsea and City will quickly pull out once they realise what they've let themselves in for. Then Spurs will crap themselves and follow suit. Liverpool and United will probably try to stick it out and are driving forces. Arsenal also have American influence so I'm not sure which way they will go.

But if 3 English clubs pull out, I don't think it will happen. If we had Chelsea, Spurs and City....maybe Arsenal in the Premier League, who gives a crap if Liverpool and United go? The Premier League would still be very strong. It doesn't need those two clubs, but losing all six would be felt to a degree.

PSG and the 2 German clubs have stayed away, but I'm sure they could find other big (or biggish clubs) to fill the gaps, but it will quickly become a white elephant league with some giants and some clubs to make up the numbers. It would be crap.

In theory, if the TV money reduces there will be downward pressure on wages and transfer fees, so relatively speaking there could still be money to be made for someone like Gino.

The point about a Netflix style platform could also completely mitigate any loss in the first place. Not withstanding setting up their own platform, off the top of my head they could even agree a deal with someone like amazon, say £10 a month on top of prime with £3 going to Amazon. How many homes globally could amazon get the new PL into?

I think if even one of City, Liverpool, United or Chelsea pull out, the whole thing will collapse. It'll take just one of them. But I suspect a couple of them would be in talks with one another to simultaneously drop out - rather than going it alone to take the criticism from the others.

Perez is claiming no one can drop out and binding contracts have been signed so I'm sure it won't just fade away as a 'bad idea' however.

The trouble is collective bargaining would be the first thing to go. There's no way Leeds and Newcastle are going to want to be shackled to a price point fixed to ensure clubs like us, Burnley or Fulham are still quids in. They'll want to take as much as they can and sell their rights as a club, not as part of the collective.

Yup. Once Ajax and Sporting and even Celtic start getting mentioned as founder clubs we'll know it's going to be dead on arrival.

I’m listening to the podcast version of last night’s debate and to be fair to Jamie Carragher he goes on to acknowledge that Sky were involved in the formation of the Premier League and asked the question as a Sky employee; ‘are we hypocrites?’

I suspect they’d be looking towards Napoli, Roma, Lyon etc as opposed to Scottish clubs. Porto maybe as they always seem to go deep in the CL against the odds. I was a bit shocked Ajax aren’t in the original proposal to be honest.

But they also have a salary cap and the draft system to level the playing field to keep things competitive.
The ESL could have a salary cap but could implement a draft system so it is not going to be as competitive.

The first cracks are already supposedly beginning to show with unnamed English clubs claiming that Liverpool and United have ‘lied’ to them and ‘bullied’ them into it.

Which was always going to happen as a way of them trying to appease their fanbase. But these are billionaire businessmen and venture capitalists. They didn’t sign up to something of this magnitude with their eyes closed or not knowing what they are signing up to lock, stock and barrel.

Fans shouldn’t be bought off by them pointing fingers if it collapses - every plan has ringleaders but no way do organisations of their size good hoodwinked into such deals. Treat every one of them the same, whether it collapses or not.

Initial domestic punishments should be meted out by the end of the week in my opinion. And if it throws the current PL season into disarray, so be it. It’s crap without fans anyway so it won’t be much loss in the history of things. These clubs have to know the magnitude of the mistake they’ve made - and strong words from other clubs but an offer to get round a table with them doesn’t wash. Punish them. And let them appeal it in the event this Super League collapses before it starts. But footballing authorities have to show they mean business - and not wait for reports to be carried out or mediation talks to end.

How many players have moved to a CL club for less money so they can play in the CL?
I may be cynical but I do not believe any of the spout from players when they talk about wanting to win things when the move also means a big pay rise. Money is the prime reason, playing level is secondary.

This would need clarifying. How legally binding is the contract the clubs have signed. I heard it was a 23 year commitment to the Super League, however, that could just mean we're committed to exploring the idea. It could mean anything. If they are locked in legally, then it would be very difficult to break away I would suspect, but it doesn't seem to be totally concrete. There is probably some type of breakout clause.

Infantino said this morning that they can still change their mind and come back. Nothing is final.

Spurs are supposedly a billion dollars in debt. They are banking on this as there appears to be no way for them to qualify for the CL this season. Only possible way they keep their talisman as well.

They can't afford not to do this.
